The University of Baseball

This place would SEEM to have all the makings of a legit business centered around batting cages. However, if you spend money here, for the purpose of having a place to hit balls, you’d be wasting your cash and time.
I think it runs about $ 20 – 30 for a half hour to use a pitching machine. Sure, the video pitching machine is kind of cool in theory, but I found myself hating it after a short period of time because there’s a slight lag between when the video pitches it and when the ball shoots out of a hole in a projection screen. I’d prefer to be able to see the pitch load in the machine and then watch it tossed at me. After all, you can see a pitcher’s arm holding a ball as it is thrown to you, right?
You can only reserve the cage for a half hour. No one walked over and said «Oh, you’re paying $ 60 a month to be a member? Take your time!» Instead, you have that half hour. After the pitching machine tosses, I dunno, 20 balls, you have to use your time to pick up these balls, which is probably going to eat away a couple minutes after each round. So you’re going to spend around a third of your time collecting balls, resetting the pitching machine, etc.
If you’re not getting a membership, just go to Austin Park and Pizza. Their cages there are outside, which is fine unless it’s raining. It’s not like you’re going to beat the heat inside at The Univ of Baseball… it’s fairly hot in there. They usually only have a giant fan running. Plus, at Austin Park and Pizza, you pay a dollar for 20 balls. So for around $ 5, you’re getting the same thing you get at The University of Baseball for about 4 times as much.
The softball machine is also ALWAYS broken at The University of Baseball. There are at least two softball machines at Austin Park and Pizza, and they seemed to work fine, although they pitch it a little faster than anyone would pitch in a slow pitch league.
Customer service at The University of Baseball is sort of a joke. The only person I ever see up there is a young guy… although I’d consider him a kid. He doesn’t bother greeting me anytime I arrive, and he acts like working there is punishment. There’s a lady that I assume manages but I never see her there. I emailed her constantly about whether the softball machine has been repaired. I either got back an email telling me «no» and that they were working on getting «a part», or I got no reply at all. I cancelled my membership as soon as I could (GUESS WHAT, you’re paying for the first AND last month’s membership– yup, a cool $ 120), and she charged me for another month. She replied to me about a week later with a refund.
I think they do some stuff with kids, so maybe it’s worth it if that’s more of your thing, but I’d still rather just take my kid to Austin Park and Pizza, spend $ 5, and have the same amount of batting practice. There’s rarely a line at Austin Park and Pizza either on the weekdays.
In conclusion, I would never go back to this place. I guess if I lived literally next door and just walked over, it MIGHT be worth it to be a member, but when I have to call to make an appointment to hit for a half hour (as opposed to just being able to go to a website and reserve a time), drive there, and pick up all my balls every time I hit around 20 pitches, no thanks, it ain’t worth it.
I’ll be going to Austin Park and Pizza from now on. I prefer the outdoors anyways, and I can stay for an hour, two, three… heck, all day, if I want. No reservations. No lines.

Um, no thanks. There are few bats and helmets to use, and the bats are dented or have the tape coming off, so you will be holding the metal with sticky hands. The helmets are gross and are missing padding. Some of them have padding but it is really old, dry, and cracked. When we returned the ones we used, they weren’t sprayed or anything. (Which is especially gross since we sweat a lot bc of no a/​c.) The place is indoors and not air conditioned (so it’s stuffy). When we went in we dealt with a teenager that definitely could have been more friendly or enthusiastic about his job. It seemed there were three meshed-​in cages, and only one had a pitching machine, so I’m not too sure what that was about. It was $ 25 for the both of us for 30 minutes. In fairness, I do think we stayed for 40 min (by accident) and he didn’t say anything about it. Won’t be going back though.
If they get new helmets and bats, and start spraying the helmets, and get the kid some customer service skills, we’d go back. As we were leaving, he did say they had a fan that we could have used. Thanks, and great timing you have there, kid.

This place was TERRIBLE. Wanting to give my boyfriend and his softball friends a batting session for his birthday, I called here to make an appointment. I had reserved the soft-​pitch machine about three weeks in advance of coming, and they told me on the phone that they would call me if it wasn’t in working condition when I came.
We showed up the day of and the employee (a hapless, poorly dressed teenager) told us that the soft-​pitch machine wasn’t working, and hadn’t been for weeks. I let him know that they said they would call me if it wasn’t in service. I asked if we could have them do some practice now and re-​schedule for when it was working again, and he basically said that the guy who repairs it won’t repair it anymore, and there was no date that we could come back. The kid didn’t offer us any kind of recourse, wouldn’t bring the manager/​owner to talk to me about the disappointing experience, and when I asked to have them call me so I could explain my distress, he said, «We’re not very good at making outgoing calls».
I work in a place that really values customer service, so to get such terrible service was really disappointing. Especially because it was supposed to make someone I care for have a really great experience, and instead we walked away with nothing at all.
I highly recommend going anywhere else.

Trying to get back into shape for softball season I went to these batting cages thought i would spend some time in the cages on Sunday. The facility is small (8 or so cages) but they offer baseball, softball, and slow pitch softball. They loaned me a bat and helmet for free. The staff really went above and beyond to help offering to personally pitch to me until they could get the slow pitch machine working.
I had a good time getting my swing back in order and will be back to this facility as the season gets going.
