It was another rare lunch out with my office mate. Both of us were craving sushi. A quick drive north on 360 and here we are. We both order a bento box. I had the shrimp tempura. It had the usual fare in it. Shrimp, salad, sushi, and rice. It was decent and well-priced for lunch. Dinner here is much more expensive. What I found was the service is lacking. So everything took twice as long.

the sushi was not THAT bad, but this place is so depressing! it feels pretty worn down, the service is slow, no music, bad lighting, and to be honest It’s just impossible to enjoy sushi when the entire restaurant smells like urine

I’ve only been for lunch, but I’ve never been disappointed. The lunch specials are legion, so the hardest part is figuring out which to order. I always do the sushi math — most pieces of fish for the price. But sometimes you have to just go with what sounds good. My current favorite special includes 4 pieces of nigiri, a spider handroll, and a roll that includes a couple kinds of fish(can’t remember what it’s called, but it’s good). The quality of the sushi is good, the staff is nice, and I’ve never had to wait for a table.(Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but it’s nice not to have to worry about it.) The specials come with a pretty bland salad and a decent miso soup. I see other reviewers like some of the non-sushi dishes, but when sushi is available, I’m unlikely ever to order anything else. Upshot: decent sushi, good specials, no wait.

Some friends and I picked this place because it was close and wanted some good sushi. We walked in to a nearly empty restaurant that smelled like urine. We were seated and ordered drinks. The sodas were flat. I asked which rolls were not fried and the waitress could not tell me. We placed our order. An HOUR and full restaurant later(with everyone but us being served food– sushi, soup etc) we asked where our food was. The waitress insisted it would be out and she would go grab it. About 15 mins later we said we wanted to pay for our drinks and leave. She ran over and talked to another waitress then told us it would be a few more minutes. We demanded her to get us our ticket. We paid, and left. No apologies or anything. The waitress even told the sushi chefs not to make our table’s rolls… way to make us feel very appreciated… then again maybe this saved us from food poisoning. Never again.

Honestly, I didn’t have high expectations walking into here… the last time I came was in college & you know as a college student, any restaurant tastes good! But… I was pleasantly surprised by the Beef Udon Soup! $ 9 and a very filling portion. ITWASREALLYGOOD! Although it doesn’t look impressive. The beef literally looks like beef from a bowl of Phở… but it WASNOT. It was tender & fell apart in my mouth as I ate it… but not because it was overly fatty. It was just GOOD. Soup had a ton of flavor & the noodles were not overcooked! Veggie tempura was ok. $ 6 they give you a good amount… but they don’t really do tempura that well here… It wasn’t extra-crispy the way I like it. It was slightly crispy but then also kind of soft as you bite into it. I wouldn’t recommend it. I can’t comment on the sushi since I didn’t really eat much of it– but the california hand rolls was decent($ 3) as was their eel hand roll($ 4). Service was good & parking was easy to find. I would come just for the Udon noodles :)

Our server was a no frills lady that impressed me very much! We had a large group. She didn’t smile the entire night, but she was super attentive, offered to take our picture for us, split our check any way that we wanted, remembered everything we each ordered without error, and provided very accurate information on timing of the meal. Such great service and we realized she didn’t even have incentive as tip was mandatory and automatically added to the bill. I had the Beef Udon and as Cynthia commented — pleasantly surprised! Tender not fatty beef and the udon had the perfect chew. It hit the spot on a rare freezing cold day in Austin. I also had the spider roll which was solid. The soft-shell crab was fresh and crunchy as it should be. Convenient location with lots of parking. It wasn’t busy when we went so seems like a good choice for large groups.

For the amount of money that you pay this place is amazing! Really good«bang for the buck» in terms of sushi in Austin. Been doing takeout here for quite a while and they ways get my order correctly and I. A timely manner with awesome service along the way. Thanks for being so tasty and awesome guys!

I’ve driven by this place for the last past three years and never even thought about it. Too bad for me. Our server was extremely polite and very accommodating, the sushi was delicious as were there potstickers(must try). Not to mention that it was worth every single penny. I will be back and I will bring friends.

Over the course of a year I have gone to Sushi Sake probably 5 or so times. Each time I kept questioning myself on why I go back. Service: The service is slow, friendly, but slow. I’ve been both for lunch and dinner and I’m not sure that it really matters. Each time there is maybe a 3rd of the dining room full, at most. The server is nice, smiles and seems welcoming, but they are just not very attentive. Food: The food is really nothing special. They have a moderate amount of sushi rolls and since that is only what I eat at sushi restaurants I have tried quite a few. They honestly aren’t anything fantastic or unique. It’s not that they taste bad, they just aren’t inspired or interesting. Price: The price seems on par with other sushi restaurants, which is sad because you feel ripped off when you leave. It’s just not worth it. I want to like Sushi Sake because it’s convenient and close to where I live, but it just doesn’t do anything for me overall.

Sushi Sake is a place I’ve visited for about 10 years now and sadly after my last few experiences, I have to say this place has gone downhill. I have been a big fan of their Yokohama, Spicy Carlos and Spicy Susan rolls. I have also enjoyed the spicy tuna hand rolls, vegetable tempura and several other items on the menu. As of my last few visits I have noticed a change in portion size, quality and a disturbing lack of upgrades in the dining rooms and bathrooms. Yes the bathroom! It seems like the restaurant is more concerned about their profit margin instead of their customer’s experience. I noticed that the chairs were pretty torn up, glasses looked as if they hadn’t been replaced in a decade and the dining room looked run-down. As far as the bathroom goes, I was alarmed to see that the stall door which is made out of wood had several slats missing from it so if you’re doing your business, don’t be surprised if you have a viewing audience. I mean I’m a bit kinky but a restaurant bathroom viewing, doesn’t do it for me. It’s sad to see a place I used to brag about, take such a bad turn. Hopefully the folks at Sushi Sake will take the level of their restaurant back to where it used to be.

I have been going to Sushi Sake for several years. I wont profess to being a real connoisseur of Japanese food but I have never been disappointed by this place. If you visit and fail to order a Spicy Suzan Roll, you are doing yourself a huge disservice. This item alone is worth 2 stars in the overall rating.

Came here for lunch and upon entrance we were welcomed with a warm greeting. It was rather quiet since it was the afternoon. I ordered a sushi combo of Alaska and Philly roll. The Alaska was up to par and tasted good. As for the the Philly roll it definitely needs improvement. The salmon was stale and the cream cheese took over the entire roll which shouldn’t be the case. Overall, it was filling because my order came with a miso soup and a salad. For the appetizer I ordered edamame which was decent as well. For just the food, I would give this place 3 stars. With the environment, visuals, customer service I would bump it up for 4 stars. I recommend the Alaska roll and get a table instead of being seated in front of the sushi chefs at the sushi bar… It can get awkward when they stand there and stare at you.

Boyfriend and I have been here the past few Sundays, taking advantage of the all day happy hour. First off, the food is pretty good. I’m not a sushi expert by any means, but every roll I’ve had has been very tasty. We definitely take advantage of the happy hour, usually clocking in around four rolls with a few extra pieces for 40 bucks. Not bad. However, the service is terrible. The male host is always off watching sports, and all of the waitresses except one seem to be in their own world. We could see our sushi sitting at the bar ready to go for a full five minutes with our waitress nowhere to be found. Pretty good food, not so good waitstaff.

Hailing from the San Francisco bay area in California, I’ve definitely been spoiled with fresh sashimi and amazing Japanese food. I hate to be the maverick here but I was not impressed. I’m not sure if in general Japanese food in Texas is not as fresh, but I was disappointed with my meal. I came here with my family for lunch. It’s reasonably priced, but it’s the same as San Francisco. But instead, in SF, the food tastes way better. I got the sushi roll lunch combo… my poor sushi looked lumpy, and it was made with soggy rice and mushy salmon =(. It was to the point where I wasn’t completely full but opted out on leaving some sushi behind… and that rarely happens to me. Salad and soup were average… meh. I wouldn’t come back.

The best Sushi restaurants are often in unexotic locations and this one is too. Basically in a parking lot next to two empty big box stores and between two highways, this is a great sushi restaurant. They were out of Toro and Uni on a Sunday night, but that happens to any restaurant. We had fun with a flight of different sake’s and then some great sushi and also some interesting rolls. I’d recommend the«scorpion roll». A spider roll with softshell crab is commonplace but I’d never seen a scorpion roll with softshell crawfish. It was great! A bit creole tasting and it looked really cool too.(i’ll try to add a photo) Very attentive and fun waitstaff. I think my only complaint is the seaweed salad being pretty skimpy on actual seaweed, in favor of cucumber(or something like it).

A good default if you just want to fulfill a sushi fix. Convenient location, lots of parking, never a wait. Sushi sake has been around for as long as I have been in Austin(10+yrs). I usually just order some sashimi, agedashi tofu and one of their simplier rolls.(Yokohama Roll or Hamachi Roll). Happy Hour is till 6:30pm, even on Saturdays!

This place is good. Not bad at all, but not«great». After reading some reviews, we special ordered the«Carlos» roll, excited to experience what everyone else was feeling — alas. It was good, but just nothing there to push it over the edge. If we’re being honest, I think I had built it up in my mind. We had a few other rolls, and some Ramen — which were all good. I’d recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting something soothing and comforting. :)
