I haven’t written a Unilocal review in a long time, but it’s almost the new year, so here we go! I just had my first «in-​depth» haircut in a long time with Kelly, and I couldn’t be happier! She really took her time to learn about my hair and its history. She gave me lots of tips, tricks, and advice. I LOVE my new hair. I’ll surely be back when I need another cut, and if I ever want to try something completely different. Thanks!

I’ve been following Kim Glessner around for years, that gal is magical when it comes to knowing what your hair needs. Want to completely change your color? Need a totally different cut? Kim will work with you and you will be grinning ear to ear with your new hair before she’ll let you walk out the door (and often she’s still following you making sure every last hair is falling perfectly in place)!

My experience was more like Lyndsay L than Laura –my hair is even more of a challenge in that it is not thick, but fine and frizzy /​curly. Terry always sees something positive to work toward, taking the time to explain how it is possible despite my swimming or kayaking and being maybe too indifferent to good hair care. Four stars because I haven’t yet challenged her range, but I’m sure she’d be great under all circumstances. Does not push products or services, waiting for me to ask. The private room is very relaxing and means we get the most out of our discussion without others’ intrusion.

I have thick, wavy/​curly and often frizzy hair, so I often dread getting my hair cut. Every once in awhile I find a stylist who appreciates my hair for what it is, and I heave a big sigh of relief and sit back and let them do their thing. But unfortunately this is a pretty rare experience.
Most of the time I end up getting my hair cut by someone who is determined to beat it into submission and turn it into a cookie-​cutter version of the straight, smooth hairstyle that they think everyone should have. Unfortunately, Terry seems to fall more into the «battle thick and curly hair» camp than the «let the hair do its natural thing» camp.
She asked me how I like to wear my hair, and I told her that I like to wear it curly/​wavy. She smiled and nodded, and then proceeded to blow dry, flat iron, and style it into straightness, while criticizing my hair (my bangs went too far back on my head, my hair was too frizzy, etc). Not a huge deal, mis-​styled hair is pretty easy to take care of, I just went straight home and washed it.
Terry seems to get rave reviews from everyone else, so maybe I just don’t represent her normal clientele. But it’s still something to keep in mind if you’re looking for someone who’s willing to appreciate your own personal style.

Having my hair done by Terry was an absolute pleasure! I had come to her with a Groupon for partial highlights, which was handled without issue, and proceeded to have the best hour and a half of my day! She was very pleasant to talk to, and her studio is just charming. She delivered beautiful, natural looking highlights, a quick bang trim, great hair advice and an all around pleasant experience. I would highly recommend her to anyone!

I LITERALLY fly from Australia to have my hair cut by Kim. Every time I leave with the best damn looking mane. Wish it wasnt so far between cuts!

I went to see Terry Curry for a partial and cut. She was very professional and took time to understand what I was looking for and provide suggestions to make my look better.
I am somewhat picky about my color and she did an awesome job, she made it look very natural and took the time to even highlight under my pony tail. She asked me if I wore my hair up and showed me how with a partial, it can look like two different colors when your hair is up. I didn’t even think about that before. She also has her own room in the salon which is great for privacy and more relaxing.
This is really what a hair stylist should be, informative, creative and able to listen to your needs. I really recommend Terry for your next cut/​color.

After seeing the influx of positive reviews via Unilocal and his staggering first timer discounts on his webpage), I scheduled myself for a brazilian blowout and trim with Chuck Edwards. And man am i glad that i did! I had the appointment a bit after work, so in typical me fashion, I was stressed out, tired, and generally not in the best of spirits.
Chuck is professional, knowledgeable and friendly and really listens to what his clients want… he’s willing to give you his own opinion if you ask for it and it’s not an opinion laced with self-​promotion or «buy this product i endorse and youll look go-​go-​gorgeous!»
Chuck works fast but diligently. I don’t love the flat to the fact hair look, so I wish to some extent that there was an additional blow out after the hair trim, but I’m so happy with the end result that I really didn’t mind. I’m still somewhat new to the ATX area, and had one trim at another (nameless) salon in the area. It wasnt a horrible cut, but they somewhat butchered my angles and I was worried about trusting another Austin studio/​salon again. I’m so glad I chose Chuck. Chuck lived up to his reputation, assuaged those fears and I will absolutely be back again.

I’ve been to Shade Tree several times for cuts and highlights. I go to Chuck Edwards and each time and I have been very happy with the results. Shade Tree has been a very pleasant experience. Nice ambiance and staff. The only reason I am giving 4 stars rather than 5 stars is because several times I have been, Chuck was still working with another client and I ended up waiting a bit longer than I was supposed to for the scheduled appointment.

Gotta be the hair. I love subtlety with my looks. You will never see me with a radical color, outfit, whathave you. I dig such things on others, but not me.
So I visited Chuck the other evening and he put me right again. You see, the sun and I play fast and loose with one another and one of the things he likes to do to me is turn my hair brown/​reddish. I HATE it. So Chuck looked at my roots and got my entire head of hair (no small feat) back to that color and trimmed about 2 – 3 inches off. As I like, no one noticed my hair. I can tell a huge difference, but I know what I’m looking for.
What did happen is that I have gotten a ton of compliments on how good I look or some outfit that people have seen me in and not complimented me on before has caught their eye. It’s the hair. It’s the only thing different. It just looks better, therefore the whole Carla package looks better. Score!
The salon is adorable. I usually don’t really like the atmosphere of a salon. Shade Tree is super-​cozy. You feel like you could hang out there.

I got my hair cut this morning by Chuck, and I’m really happy with it! I hadn’t had a haircut in months and I had a friend cut my bangs pretty horribly. So, my hair wasn’t in the greatest shape, but he didn’t make me feel bad about it like some other stylists have! He cut my hair just like I wanted and it feels so awesome and healthy now. The cut was also very precise and done quickly but not in a rushed manner.
Chuck was very friendly and the salon itself is very cute and has a relaxing atmosphere.

As a recent returnee to Austin, I was stuck with the chore of finding a new stylist. A task I usually let Fate handle for me, but apparently Fate was busy meddling in other people’s lives and I didn’t run into a single stylist before I was ready to take shears into my own hands. So… I turned to Unilocal and Citysearch for assistance. After a serious search, I eventually selected Shade Tree for it’s proximity and then Chuck based on multiple stellar reviews. I’m so very glad I did.
Chuck not only gave me a stunningly fabulous cut that is amazingly easy to ‘fix’ myself, he actually listened to every word I said. I don’t know about you, but to me, a stylist that can hear and, more importantly, then translate your words into exactly what you want (even when you’re not completely sure yourself) is worth his/​her weight in gold.
Funny thing about that last idea is that I’ve laid down some SERIOUS cash for cuts I ended up feeling like I could have done myself, obviously leaving feeling a bit gypped. You will NEVER feel like that with Chuck. His pricing is very reasonable, plus he offers great specials and discounts. And ultimately, it is very clear that Chuck feels it imperative on every single one of his clients leaves Shade Tree with a smile on their face, thrilled with their hair.

Well, although Chuck doesn’t need anymore glowing reviews, it couldn’t hurt right?
He did a great job with my hair! I am a natural blonde, and I had recently colored it RED, and was trying to go back. He carefully listened to me attempt to describe what I was looking for. I always appreciate it when someone isn’t in a rush to get me in and out and takes the time to not only listen to my needs, but to be sure they’ve done the BEST possible job.
The salon is cute and comfortable with a welcoming enviroment. I will be returning. Thanks Chuck!

I went back for one last pamper before I moved to Vancouver.
Amazing. That’s all I can say.
I sent Chuck a few photos of what I had in mind in terms of colour (wanted to go back to my natural shade… whatever that is…) and he did a great great job. He made sure my cut was easy to maintain and one which would grow out nicely since I’m now a broke college student in Canada.
Get on his mailing list. He just got Keratin treatments onto his repertoire and I’m pissed that I’m not still around to get one! I hear they’re amazing!

Let me just say that Chuck is a mind-​reader when it comes to doing hair. Without fail, every time I leave him, my hair looks fabulous!!! I’ve got really long hair, which ordinarily might frustrate some stylists. Not Chuck! He seems to know exactly what I want, even though I might not be able to explain it just right. He asks a lot of questions and makes sure he has a clear vision of what i’m after before he starts to mix colors.
I’ve been going to Chuck for a little over 6 years and have loved every cut and color we’ve tried. There’s few things better than leaving a salon looking like a superstar… every time!

I had a horrible cut just 7 weeks ago and had pretty much been leaving my hair in a ponytail. It was a frizzy, out of control mess that I had given up on.
I found Cat on Craigslist. She was advertising a special on haircuts and I figured I had nothing to lose but bad hair, and lose it I did!
First off the scalp massage was amazing! That was worth $ 20 right there. I clench my jaws alot and during the massage Cat kept running her thumbs behind my jaws til they relaxed. What was really cool also was how her and Chuck immediatly stopped talking while the massage was happening so I could totally relax. Totally cool!
So, on to the haircut. We talked for quite a while before she got started so that she completely understood what I was looking for. Since I wasn’t really sure myself, it was helpful to bounce ideas off her and get her feedback. We decided to take a good 3 inches off and give me a sophisticated bob. I am always terrified when a stylist does this because I often get the little dutch boy cut and being in my 40’s this is the last thing I want! I admit, when I thought she was finished with my cut and was blowing it out, I had a panic attack. I thought it was exactly what I was dreading. But after drying she continued to cut. When she finished I had a sophisticated, sexy new do! I am so happy! And when I went to happy hour all my coworkers were so impressed! I think I gave Cat’s name to at least 10 people!
I am thrilled to have found Cat and Shade Tree Salon. I will be going to her for a long time.

Let me start by saying I’m a pretty simple guy when it comes to what I wear and how I look. Even though I’m an actor, I never gave much thought at all to getting anything, but the same cut at Supercuts for years. It was fast and it worked.
About 2 years ago, my stylish boss told me that my Bealtes-​esque mop wouldn’t do anymore so she introduced me to Kelly Vlass.
Wow has my opinion changed on what hair should look like and be. Kelly is amazing. I was nervous the first time going because when I walked in it was all women and wondered where my boss had sent me. Kelly though made me feel comfortable and welcome. She even laughs at my completely retarded jokes.
The best parts about going to Kelly is she takes time with each client. You never feel like she’s rushing you in and out. She’s extremely reasonably priced compared to what I’ve seen others charge, and best of all not only does she know what she’s doing, you can tell she really enjoys her work.
I went to her very much a blank slate and not once since going to her have I not gotten compliments on the cuts Kelly gives me. When I landed a roll in the play «Grease» it was Kelly who helped turned me into Kenickie.
All in all Kelly and everyone at Shade Tree are fantastic and well worth going to.

It’s a good sign when you keep checking yourself out in any reflective surface after seeing a new stylist — means something went very right. :)
Tried out Shade Tree Studio for the first time and had my hair cut and styled by Chuck; I am so happy with how it turned out. Was trying to find someone a little closer to my area, and found Chuck via Craigslist (always a crapshoot). Thankfully, I got a wonderful precision haircut that is exactly what I wanted.
The salon itself is adorable, very cozy and relaxing, but also clean and airy, without that dingy factor that some «house» salons can have. I’m admittedly a really boring client (I tend to fall asleep during the shampoo and «rest my eyes» during the blow out), and I didn’t feel weird about doing that with Chuck. It’s so much easier to enjoy the experience if everyone else gives off comfortable, friendly vibes, as they do here.
ALSO, they have online booking! A life saver for people like me who can never remember to call ahead.
All in all, I’m very happy with my hair, had a great experience at the salon /​with my stylist, and it’s closer to my home. Good day indeed.
