Can I stay«Soul Food» in a soulful setting. Everything I have ordered here has made my toes curl up and I think of Big Mama’s house with every bite. I usually order the smothered pork chops, rice, sweet potatoes and greens and for dessert peach cobbler. Scream!!! So good This food is so good!

I usually only use Unilocal to gauge my decisions based off other reviews. However, Roland’s deserved my stomach’s appreciation and gratitude because MYEXPERIENCEWASSOMETHINGTOSHOUTABOUT!!! I ordered the fried fish plate with mashed potatoes and yams as my sides of choice. All for a grand total of only 10.81!!! I had no idea how big of a portion I received until I got home! Very generous. Delicious is an understatement. I felt like I was at my grandma’s table for Sunday dinner. Everything was amazing and I’m so glad I just happened upon this amazing place. I cannot wait to go back! Until then, it’s time for a quick nap because I now have the –itis :-)

I’m a Southerner. I grew up eating this stuff. I pass by Roland’s everyday on my way home from work. I decided to give this place a try on New Year’s Day. I wanted to like this place. I really did. I brought a friend. I ordered the 6 pc. shrimp plate with collard greens, Mac and cheese, and peach cobbler for dessert. My friend ordered the fried fish with collard greens and black eyed peas. The verdict: The peach cobbler — VERYGOOD. Like very good! I even recommended it to another customer as I headed out the door. The cornbread and collard greens — GOOD. Not great but good. The black eyed peas and the Mac and cheese — OKAY. The Mac and Cheese was a notch above Kraft Mac and cheese. I liked the seasoning of the black eyed peas BUT it was a tad too salty and they were undercooked as in they crunched just bit. Not good. The shrimp and the fish — TERRIBLE. We reached the conclusion that they must use the same oil to fry both. Why you ask? The friend’s fish tasted like shrimp. My shrimp tasted of fish. Also, I’m pretty sure the oil was old. When you reuse oil over and over, it gets a weird after taste. I love shrimp but after two bites, I left the remaining shrimp uneaten. My friend will not be a repeat customer. I want to give them another shot but I don’t want the disappointment. When you screw up something I love(like shrimp) pretty hard for you to come back from that.

This food is amazing. Best gator tail I’ve had in years. Super authentic down south soul food. The greens were my second favorite part of this meal. I know where I’ll be getting my greens for new years this year!

Southern to the bone. Great neck bones. Superb Oxtail. Rockfish flanks. All of it excellent. I usually get the greens and mashed potatoes but the okra(extra) and mac and cheese also rocks. Then there is the love. You get it when you go there. The service my be casual and slow but when you get that kind of love in your soul food it’s worth it.

The service was horrible and food was not so good. We were looking over the menu and noticed that they had all you can eat fish with two sides. My boyfriend got that and I got the chicken fried chicken with two sides. The fish was great and so was the chicken but the sides were horrible. The mashed potatoes and gravy had no flavor. My boyfriend wanted more fish so he asked. The guy told him«sure for more money» we thought he was kidding because it was all you can eat. Well when we were getting ready to leave the guy said we can’t leave until we pay $ 5. $ 5!!! For a small piece of fish!!!’ When we ordered all you can eat!!! He was rude about it. He lost our business. NOTRECOMMENDINGIT!

Sweet buttered spuds! Me and my brother went here for lunch today and it was very good. And when I say ‘very good,’ I mean decadent. And when I say ‘decadent,’ I mean gravy so good, you want to dip everything into it, mashed potatoes with butter you can taste, oxtail that melts in your mouth. I wanted to eat until I passed out. And damn near did. And, yeah, sure, now I can’t move — but it was MY decision to get three sides(mashed potatoes, green beans and black-eyed peas) and to finish them all — so I can’t really complain, can I? I will definitely be going again. And soon.

Ok — we are going out to eat and the plan is straight meat. The choice is Roland’s neckbones or going to Flemings for a steak. Easy call. Rolands. Moist. Flavorful. Perfect texture. As wonderful as the best boiled beef from a Jewish grandma. (and I should know — I’ve got two of them.) A good steak simply can’t compete. Side dishes are solid and respectable. Your basic greens cornbread etc etc. They will sometimes need the salt shaker or the sport peppers — but that is why Roland put the salt and sport peppers on your table. Friendly place where lots of the customers know each other. The crowd is loud and sociable. Thumbs up.

Never eating there again. Very small hole in the wall location but thats not what turned me off. After looking at the menu I was excited cause they had chitterlings on the menu so I figured this has to be a «real soul food place» meaning my food would be bomb. It was not. Everything was really lightly seasoned and so sloppy in my container. On top of that the woman who I guess cooks or prepares the plates was rude to us. We had never been here and I didn’t know I was expected to get my own food. But I said hopefully the food is worth her rudeness. It was NOT. It’s just as nasty as her attitude. My boyfriend cleans his plate EVERYWHERE. He didn’t finish his food and he didn’t want to bring it home either.

Roland’s Soul Food and Fish is literally food for the soul. I get the smothered pork chop almost every time I come here, and I’m NEVER disappointed. Everyone is friendly and makes you feel at home. The meatloaf, wings, and fried fish are delicious as well. I don’t think you can go wrong with anything you order from here. You can definitely tell the food is made with love. And don’t get me started on the sides and cornbread… greens, cabbage, corn, rice and gravy, mashed potatoes… amazing. Thank you Roland!

You will want to lick your plate at Roland’s. This is soul food where the cook must have stuck his foot in it to get it tasting this good! The main dishes are filling. The sides are a long long way from store bought. This is food that after you try everything on return visits you will have trouble deciding what to get but everything not only sounds good, ITISGOOD!!!

I went there to visit a friend and had oxtail soup, which is only served on Thursday. I stop there every I go to Austin. Its the best meal I’ve had like that in a while. Some good olé home cooked style soul food. The collard greens are off the chain. Awesome job Mr Roland. Thanks AJ «The Hawaiian»

This is the only real authentic soul food in town. The very nicest people run the show, the patrons even wanted to know how much we loved it. Let’s just say it’s fantastic. our first lunch today was smothered pork chops — breaded fried chops that were braised in a brown gravy and so tender we ate them with a freaking plastic fork. c’mon folks. I’m a gravy snob and this was really nice brown gravy atop these babies. Big as your head too. Sides are classic, greens, green beans, black eyed peas, yams, mac n cheese, etc. Several offerings every day include fried fish, chicken fried chicken, fried chic wings, etc. today’s special was meatloaf and a redfish flank(what?), how badass is that? clean, hot food. other specials include oxtails, chitterlings. soul food bring it on. a lovely family business that deserves their success. kudos folks, you are on my weekly rotation. Love this!!!

Went there after learning about the spot thru . Bought a $ 10 gift certificate but was told by the super-friendly waitress that they don’t take them in that denomination but do accept the larger ones. AND you will need to print it out and bring it with you so the owner can use it for tax purpose she said. I didn’t let that stop me. I went at 1pm by which time the lunch specials were sold out. Ordered the smothered fried pork chop, collard greens and mashed potatoes. Oh boy was it a treat. As was the Kool-Aid. Seriously they serve Kool-Aid. Oh Yeah! The place was clean, service was great and food, oh man, good home cooking. They were out of gumbo so I plan to go back. Minus one star for offering a deal on but not honoring it. Don’t let that keep you away though.

I took some friends to Roland’s Soul Food because one of them was homesick. This restaurant consistently serves fresh, flavorful home-cooked food and the service was excellent. When you walk in, you’re greeted like you’re an old friend dropping in for dinner. We ordered the smothered pork chops, neckbones and various mixed vegetables. They were all great. The fried okras were newly fried upon order. The server/waitress Nicole is phenomenal! You will enjoy your food and experience.

When I was a kid, Mom used to spend Sunday mornings before church getting a roast ready to cook all day. By the time we got back from seemingly endless hours of Sunday school and a service and the singing and the baptising and the socializing after, it was falling apart in a stew of its own flavorful gravy. I never thought I’d taste anything with that flavor. Until I had oxtail at Roland’s. I started to get fish, but as Nicole was talking to another customer, I changed my mind and got the oxtail. I love trying exotic food, after all. But what I had was not exotic, but the next-best thing to my Mom’s most famous dish from my childhood! The dish we served when we knew we’d have company. The dish that filled the whole house with the best smell in the world. Nothing is as tender as the meat on this oxtail. Or as flavorful. It’s full of an amazing gravy that is poured over a bed of perfectly-cooked white rice. I could only eat half of it, so my boyfriend has a treat when he gets home — if I don’t get tempted in the meantime. Then you get two sides: blackeyed peas corn green beans greens and more that I forgot. I also got a slice of sweet cornbread and tea for $ 12. I got the greens because I am(contrary to what it looks like) trying to eat healthier. They were basic collards, I believe, served without any added fat and not too overcooked. There was pepper sauce on the table, and I really think this side was perfect: simple. Then I tried the black eyed peas. Pretty good. Not very soupy, but a good, simple, clean flavor that didn’t seem to have meat added. Very nice, since there are so many vegetarians in Austin. Nicole was extremely nice. I saw Roland for a second, but he seemed busy with things in the back. Word is that it will start being open for dinner soon, and maybe even host some live bands. For now, they are open for lunch and weekends.

YUMMMM. Went with some colleagues for lunch after driving past it dozens of times and commenting that we should try it. We were not disappointed. The waitress was friendly and quickly caught us up to speed on the specials and her favorites. I had the three-piece fish with yams and greens and it came with cornbread. It was probably the best fried fish I’ve ever had. The breading is perfection as mentioned below. The yams were perfectly sweet without being obnoxious and the greens were succulent as well. I only wish my mom could see me eating them after a childhood of PB& Js because I was so picky! All of our food(five people) came out quickly and piping hot. We will definitely be back for round 2 and hopefully 3, 4 and 5.
