The mojitos! The Yucca fries! The meat empanadas! I could rave on and on about this place. Def make a reservation to get a table. The environment is cozy, you can get noise from the Courtyard next door but it’s never too loud. Go-to HH spot.

Rum makes you happy. An apt declaration on PSR’s website and one that I fully agree with after drinking/dining there on a Thursday night. My coworkers and I had a fantastic evening full of Cuban food and yes, rum. Between our table, I’m fairly certain we tried a majority of drinks. No complaints there. The food. Whilst sipping Cuban drinks we sampled their plantain chips, empanadas, yucca fries, and popcorn, which are great companions to the drinks and far superior to the typical bar fare. The plantain chips are addictive and you’ll find yourself having eaten far too many. They come with coconut guacamole, curried black bean dip, and scotch bonnet salsa. The dips were mediocre as the salsa, despite having scotch bonnet peppers, wasn’t very spicy and the curry in the bean dip was not very forward. Honestly, the chips on their own are tasty enough. Yucca fries are a must in their fried, starchy goodness and ideal for absorbing those boozy beverages. Again, the dips for them were a bit off. The popcorn. YUM. Dusted with a cheesy, spicy mix, you’ll find yourself happily munching away on the entire bag. The drinks. I tried the Rum Fix and the Rum Old Fashioned and would recommend both! The former is lighter and served in a Collins glass with crushed ice. It’s a refreshing blend of fruit from the roasted pineapple gomme syrup with herbal undertones from the Chartreuse. The Rum Old Fashioned had two kinds of rum and was deliciously bitter, booze forward, and went down a tad too smooth. The service was iffy as they often didn’t check on our table and would walk by without looking at us but the food and drinks made up for the lackluster wait staff. Overall thoughts: rum does indeed make you happy.

Nope, nope, nope. Hokey décor and bad service aside, this place was a disappointment. I made reservations here the other night for dinner with my parents and boyfriend. The menu looked great, and the host was super warm upon our arrival, so I had high hopes. Alas, I was wrong. Our waitress came to the table already annoyed. This made sense, because she appeared to the only person working tables in a relatively full restaurant. I would be, too! Anyway, bad attitude aside, I was determined to like this place. My boyfriend ordered the fitzcaraldo, and I ordered the el presidente, after asking out waitress for a recommendation for a dry cocktail, not too sweet. They arrived pretty quickly, and weren’t half bad. They were, however, strong. Not a bad thing, but worth noting if your loved ones don’t find your tipsy pontificating as charming as mine do. Our waitress was MIA for a while after that, and when she arrived at our table(dragging with her a dark cloud of doom and gloom), she informs us that the chicharron, the banana leaf snapper, the shrimp mojo, the lobster, the pulpo, and the Trinidad pork are all off the menu for the evening. Alright, but that’s half the menu! And it was 7:00! On a Sunday! We weren’t phased. We ordered the wood grilled corn, veggie empanadas, ‘mitas, yucca fries, the snapper ceviche, the vegetal, the Cubano, and the jerk chicken. All were pretty disappointing; the corn and the yucca fries were under-seasoned, the vegetal and the veggie empanadas were both filled with bland, indistinguishable vegetable mush, and the ceviche was rank and inedible. The protein in the fish was so denatured, it was almost melting. The saving graces: the cubano, the ‘mitas(but really, who doesn’t like popcorn?) and the churros we ordered at the end of the meal. Our waitress was absent, unpleasant, and hard to get ahold of, so the whole ordeal lasted about five times longer than I wanted it to. Ultimately, a bummer. I’m guessing there’s a direct correlation to the strong drinks the restaurant serves and the relatively high praise it receives.

This is my second time here. I brought along some friends this time. This place may become a mandatory stop for me anytime in downtown. This time I had Jerk chicken with the plantain chips. My friends both had the medianochee(a kickass burger delight). I felt that it would just be wrong to come here and not get the churros. Before moving on, we had an Old Cuban, a few shots of rum from the awesome bartenders. Good staff, good food and atmosphere.

If there was such a thing as classy pirates, pretty sure this is where they hang and count their loot. I really dig this place and its island flair. The drinks are tasty(fan of the Old Cuban, not sweet) and the food is tasty. My favorite thing about it is the atmosphere — a perfect place to come with friends for HH or hanging out with your gal, Keria Knightley and homie Johnny D.

Food was good, cocktails were good, cool décor and good Cuban music. Good happy hour. Why 3 stars? Terrible service. Ignore you, slow food delivery, don’t check on drink refills, even with a total of fewer than 20 customers in the entire place. Sitting at the bar might be better than tables as far as service.

This place is a GEM! It’s got everything I like without being pretentious… which is becoming a rarity these days. First off, they totally nailed the décor and vibe… so eclectic and vintage. Most places trying to go for this type of feel also have waiters/bartenders that are too good to make eye contact or treat you like paying customers. PSR is not one of those! The bartenders were the first contact we had and they were awesome. Both took time to talk to us about their cocktails and made sure we were well taken care of. Never did I feel like my choice might be met with a «seriously?! why didn’t you just go to Buffalo Wild Wings?!» One person in our group even ordered a Lonestar and the bartender didn’t scoff at her. I can think of a few different places that could take a note here! We were seated in about 10 minutes(told the wait was about 15) so I was already feeling very positive after that and the experience at the bar. When I took a look at the menu, I knew it was going to be a solid dinner experience. I wanted one of everything… We sampled: Yucca Fries — thickly cut but perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft in the center… these were so much better than your run-of-the-mill steak fries(although that’s why they brought to mind). They were served with both red and green mojo(places that provide ample condiments will always get my money) and I couldn’t decide which one I liked more. I could have drank the green mojo, but the red had such a great kick of spice and vinegar. Hard choice. Bring me both! Plantanos — plantain chips that were super thin and crunchy, served with 3 dips!!! toasted coconut guacamole(interesting), grilled scotch bonnet salsa(nice spice!), curried black beans(like the best bean dip!) Gran Cubano — lechon asado, sharp pickles, ham, swiss, mustard… holy moly… I mean… I took one bite and proclaimed it was the best sandwich I’d ever tasted. And it was. The bread was ridiculous. SOOOOOO crunchy on the outside and then so melty into the cheese/meat…ahhhh I want one NOW! I’ll be back for this. Probably this week! Wood Grilled Corn — This may be my only gripe because of the price…$ 8 for some corn is steep…$ 6 would be pushing it. But it was delicious. I don’t think you should charge more for food just because it tastes good. I think in order to make things seem like there was deliberate thought in the pricing, items that were obviously not expensive to prepare or purchase shouldn’t be priced higher just because they’re popular. That’s my opinion… I shouldn’t pay almost as much for 2 ears of corn as I did for a sandwich. Napali Death Tuna Ceviche — passion fruit, salted cashews, candied habenero syrup, Thai basil, lemonhart 151… This was tasty, but I wouldn’t order it again. If I do ceviche, it’s usually shrimp and at a Mexican restaurant. Just my preference. This was tasty, but not as great as the other items and more expensive. Our waiter was great… super friendly and always on top of things. They bring the food out as each dish is ready which is what I prefer in a dining experience like this where most plates are shared. I can’t wait to take my out-of-town guests and my mom here!

I came here recently with a group of 6 and it was just ok. Based on the prices of the drinks, they seem to be confused with what city they are located in. Sorry, but this is not New York, San Francisco, Chicago or LA. Some of their drinks are priced more reasonably than others, but the tiny portion of the drink I received was not very pleasant. Our server seemed to fluctuate between slightly not happy to be there and slightly nice. We sampled their yucca fries and empanadas which were ok. I’ve had each better elsewhere in town. The décor was ok. In addition to the price/portion of the drinks, what really made this 2 stars was that from here the 6 of us went next door to Péché(my first time there) and we all agreed that we liked our drinks, service and the atmosphere a lot better. I’m glad I tried it here, but there is little that would compel me to return.

I wanted to like this place, but unfortunately my experience at Pleasant Storage Room was unpleasant. I had friends visiting in town and I suggested getting dinner here before a night out at some bars on the west side of downtown. I figured this would be a good spot for tasty cocktails and small bites to share. We ended up having a pretty lousy experience and I felt bad for suggesting the restaurant. Our waitress was probably the main reason for our negative experience. First she took a long time to even address our table and take drink orders. After 10 min she came back with some of the drinks(not all) and took our food order. Another 15 min goes by and appetizers start showing up at our table, but the other drinks have still not arrived. Food kept arriving at random times and we were still not able to get our waitresses attention to ask about the drinks. She should have been checking that our food came out correctly too btw. Finally we asked a food runner to get our waitress for us and I could see the other 2 drinks hastily made at the bar. My mixed punch was made in such a hurry that my glass was served only half way full. I was not happy with a $ 9 half full glass of weak, sugary rum punch, that took 30 min to get from the bar. The entrees came for everyone and I was equally unimpressed. I ordered the wood grill shrimp and there was only 4 shrimp and lots of flavorless rice. My boyfriend ordered the pork entrée and that was decently seasoned, but was also a small portion. Not surprisingly we sat with empty plates and glasses for a good 20 min after finishing our meal before the waitress noticed us again. Then she awkwardly said«wow you guys ate all of the food». Yes, that’s why we came to this establishment? To eat and drink here despite your obvious attempts to prevent that from happening.

Pleasant Storage offers a unique cuisine and drinks… differentiating itself from just about any other place in the area. It has a distinctly Caribbean cuisine, in a loft style atmosphere. I’ve had a number of their mixed booze punches, of course a mojito or two, empanadas, jerk chicken, ceviche, octopus, Cuban sandwich, and a few other appetizers… all have been pretty good. There are places with similarities to Pleasant Storage, such as Habana(another favorite), but there are still major differences such as the punches, and of course the location being very central. Note: the punches are great, and decent strength, but really really sugary, so I wouldn’t drink more than 2 tops unless you want a potentially ridiculous hangover brought on by the sugar. Its mostly going to be small plates(unless you get a sandwich), similar to Tapas, so costs can add up if you split a few dishes with a few drinks and tip well. The service is good, and the place draws a good crowd on the weekends; while at lunch it is way more low key. If you are waiting for a table and there is no room at the bar, try Peche for a cocktail 20 feet East of Pleasant Storage… most of their drinks are solid. Overall PSR is a good place to try out… and be sure to try out the Empanadas.

This is one of my new favorite places to eat downtown. This might partially be because I recently visited Cuba, and I’m nostalgic for all things Cuban. Everything that I’ve tried has been good. The ceviches are all fresh and flavorful. The frita is extra rich due to the mix of chorizo in this burger. The flavor is intense, but I was glad that I was splitting this burger due to the heavy oil content. The jerk chicken is my absolute favorite item on the menu. The marinade has a unique flavor that I’ve never tasted anywhere else; smooth and citrusy with a hint of cinnamon perhaps? My only complaint is the noise level that filters in from neighboring Cedar Street Courtyard. The noise level in Pleasant Storage Room can get chaotic with competing music from both inside and outside the restaurant.

The two stars serve as a warning. If you read the majority of the posted Unilocal reviews, people are raving abut the awesome happy hour. I wish I would have noticed this. Dinner(in my opinion and the four others that accompanied me) was a joke and less than impressive. The experience started with trying to order beer in which they were out of 4 of the 5 beers we requested. Also, if you like wine. .. they only have a couple choices and the waiters have no clue what the prices are or what type of wine it is. I get it, it’s a Cuban place, so whatever, I will give them a pass on not being wine connoisseurs. Now on to my favorite part, the food itself. We ordered the snapper ceviche and the shrimp ceviche. Be aware that this is more of a tapas style restaurant. The ceviche came out in tiny little glasses and the presentation itself was silly. As for the fish and shrimp, there wasn’t much. .. so keep this in mind if you are ordering for a group to share. One person got the majority of the fish on top and the rest ate the corn and various other ingredients that served as fillers. The ceviche itself was not even that yummy. We also started with the meat empanadas and this may be the only reason this place got a second star from me. We were going to order dinner, but at this point we cried mercy and made reservations down the street at another restaurant. Of course, at this point we were already $ 80+ in. Oh well, it happens. Here is my suggestion. .. the ambiance is nice. I’m sure it is a great place to stop for a nice rum drink and one small app, especially during happy hour. Otherwise, I’m just not sure this is a place I will be returning to for a real dining experience. :(

Pleasant Storage Room is, well, pleasant. Shazam! See what I did there? Anyway, that really is the best way to put it. I am SO glad that something has moved into this space that uses it in the right way. It’s downright friendly in there. We all had different drinks but the most interesting and tasty was the Tamarind. Only get this if you, you know, like the flavor of Tamarind. The other drinks were fine though be warned, the Hemingway Daquiri is tiny. But it’s probably also all booze so pick your poison. We started with the empanadas and yucca fries. The meat empanada was the clear favorite. The veggie one was as you’d expect and the fish one was too fishy for me. Others who aren’t sensitive to that may enjoy it though. Our entire table — except for yours truly — got the chorizo burger. Ever the rule-breaker, I had the cuban at the behest of our server/bartender. I always get tricked into ordering a Cuban sandwich and I’m inevitably disappointed. Because our server was so earnest, I agreed. Best decision ever. It was slow griddled into savory drooly awesomeness. Speaking of our server, he was great. Clearly loved the spot, had an opinion on all the dishes and was our bartender, to boot. I can appreciate a good multitasker. The atmosphere really is nice though I would have preferred more cuban music to what they were playing that evening. Also, whenever Cedar Street started up, they had to jam up the volume to drown out the music from next door. Not ideal but also a hazard of the location. Net Net: Try the meat empanadas, venture forth into the Tamarind cocktail, demure on the Yucca fries(zzzz), the Cuban is surprisingly good and always order something called Death Tuna. I regret bitterly that I didn’t just because of the amazing name.

The boyfriend and I stopped in a Pleasant Storage Room for dinner and drinks last night, and it was a great experience! I love the décor and atmosphere of this place — I felt like I was on vacation! The drinks here are pretty strong, and a decent deal during Happy Hour. We each ordered the Cuba Libre(regularly $ 10, $ 6 during HH), which has a unique, bubble-gum meets cola meets rum taste. Very unique. Their mojitos also looked pretty enticing, and I plan on trying one next time. I ordered the Vegital($ 8), a vegetarian option which was described on the menu as «wood grilled vegetables, curried black beans, coconut guacamole, baguette roll.» What I got was some sort of amazing panini-like sandwich with vegetables and curried black beans, a side of coconut guacamole, and what I believe was probably a serving of their tropical slaw. So it didn’t really track to what was listed on the menu, but I didn’t care because it was de-licious. The boyfriend ordered the jerk chicken($ 5 during HH), and he raved about how delicious it was. I swear the smell of it briefly made me reconsider my vegetarianism, but I held strong. We also ordered an assortment of veggie, fish, and meat empanadas($ 7 for 5). The veggie empanada I had was great, and while the boyfriend enjoyed all three versions, he voted the meat one as «the best by far.» Service was fast and friendly, and the busboy was especially attentive.

Holy crap! I love this place. Since moving to Austin from NYC I miss Caribbean food the most. It was something I would enjoy almost daily for breakfast and weekly for lunch or dinner. Move to Austin, bupkis. I discover Tony’s Jamaican and I’m in heaven. Pleasant Storage Room opens and I’m on another plane of existence. The food is outstanding. I have been dying for authentic conch fritters since a trip to Nassau a million years ago, and PSR’s conch hush puppies are a great substitute. I never had a better calalloo. The head-on shrimp with coconut rice and fried plantains was outstanding. I can’t wait to eat my way throughout the entire menu. Must try: their Cuba Libre is not just rum and coke with a lime. It’s a similar concoction they make up with rum, Pleasant Cola, key lime and bitters served on tap. Go there now. But leave me a place at the bar. Tip: There are very few tables. If you want a table during happy hour book one in advance otherwise you’ll be waiting quite a long time. The bar is crazy packed during happy hour and it’s difficult to get a seat at the bar to order food. But it clears out significantly afterwards.

This review is a tad late… we actually visited about a month ago on a Sunday… one whopping week after Pleasant Storage Room opened. We were already in downtown and really wanted to check it out because it was new. This location, to my knowledge, has been 3 different restaurants now(perhaps more; I miss Saba Blue Water Café)…so I was extra curious. The interior: Some pretty major changes. The huge salt water aquarium behind the bar is gone. So is the wall of flowing water at the back of the restaurant. Now, it’s all about Cubano! Very heavily themed, but somehow not overly done or cheesy. Very Hemingway visits the Caribbean. Oh, and did I mention rum already? Lots and lots of rum. Befitting! The staff: Sat at the large bar and the ‘tenders were super nice and seemed very excited about their new venture at PSR(kind of a strange name; not memorable). I asked about a weekend happy hour and they said«not yet, but we’re pushing for one.» Good idea! Seems to be a trend with a lot of the DTATX restaurants and it’s going to be hard to compete if the restaurant doesn’t somehow partake in the fun. {Note: Still no weekend HH; HH is Tues-Fri from 5−7pm] The drinks: So, I already pointed out rum. When in Cuba, or in a Cuban based eatery in the Warehouse District, must order a mojito. The true test of how good all other rum-based concoctions will be. Perfectly done. Authentic. Simplistic. Nice glass. Just one thing… bring me more please… albeit 9 bucks a little steep for the serving size and pour. [Another note: $ 5 mojitos during HH] The snacks: Not hungry enough for a full meal, so opted to try a few items off of the«Street Food» menu. — Napali Death Tuna Ceviche: Has cashews in it, so nut allergics beware. Small glass of fish blended with passion fruit, Thai basil, habenero and lemon flavors. Served with nicely fried, tasty plantain chips for dipping. A-OK. Flavors kind of fell flat and portion was rather small. Again, more please. –Chicharron de pollo: Crispy chicken skin that was described as «rum spiced.» Didn’t really get any rum flavor, but cannot deny the strips were tasty. Come on… fried skin = good. Served in a cute little, bottom full of grease soaked bag. Unique preso. –Empanadas: Order comes with 5 small and choice of fish, veg, or meat. A-OK. One quirky thing about the menu: The menu includes a «Glossary» for foodie Neanderthals. Kind of funny. I guess some people might appreciate it, or even need it, but… «Cuban oregano — tastes like oregano with a hint of citrus.» Lmao! What if I don’t know what non-Cuban oregano tastes like? I mean there’s Mexico oregano, Greek oregano, Turkish oregano, Italian oregano… Honestly, I didn’t know aji amarillo chilies were also called pappadews, so thanks for that little tid bit. I’m sure it will be useful during an upcoming trivia event. :-) On the whole: Admittedly, it was apparent that PSR’s kitchen was still trying to work on some kinks. The front of the house had been very well trained and were pretty spot on. I will definitely go back soon(especially for HH which seems to be a good deal) and give it another try, sample some more street food and perhaps order up the jerked chicken… and hopefully be able to give an extra star or two in my rating. Salut!

As the recently crowned Duchess of this establishment, I can say, in all certainty, nothing good will come of me drinking rum punch fortified with navy-strength gin. Nothing. I have a horrible scrape on my elbow, a few sporadic, very painful raspberries, and some questionable bruises from the second time I came here. Bender Bar and one of their more questionable clients contributed to the resulting injuries, as well as a late-night call to the police, and of course, the parking ticket I got for leaving my car downtown, but it all started with the«overproof» punch at Pleasant Storage Room. And yet, I went back and will continue. I am usually a gin drinker when it comes to craft cocktails but rum has its merits, as I’m learning. Especially if you mix rum with gin in a super sweet punch and have it very well priced for a Friday night downtown! In addition to the ‘great stories you’ll only remember parts of rum punches,’ PSR also has many nice rum-centric drinks, such as Mojitos, Daiquiris, and Cuba Libres. They will even make some«skinny» if you ask, i.e. holding added sugar. I had a Daiquiri last time, which is served up, in a small glass. It’s not the huge sugary mess you’ll get at Red Lobster(though I love that thing too), but it had as much kick in three sips as a huge drink will have. My brief royalty had taught me that as well. Yes, their drinks are small, but it’s cause they are potent. One thing I’ve learned is you can water down the punch with your own water and even at a 60:40 ratio, it’s still pretty good. I might ask them to make me a punch spritzer next time. The drinks are good, they disappear quick, and I’m sure carbonating them and making them even easier to drink will not be my wisest royal decree. They have food. I have had the jerk chicken and the ceviche. Love the very thin plantain chips served with the ceviche. If you, like me, have a mouth full of expensive dental work, ask them to hold the corn nuts from the ceviche. Your FSA funds will thank me. Try to eat a few things while you are there or before, your elbows will thank me later…

This spot was A-aiight. We popped in on a Sunday afternoon when the choice was here or Peche. Since this was the New Kid on the Block we opted to come here. We had a party of 6 and all of us ordered various things, and while there were some really delicious drinks and food presented, on the whole most of what I sampled was just OK. First, the drinks… I don’t usually drink rum so this was a new adventure for me. I had the Old Cuban(delicious yet tiny) and the Millionaire(eh, too sweet and tiny). Both drinks were served in a small yet elegant glass and both were around $ 10. NOT a bargain by any means. Just a hint: pay attention to the pictures on the drink menu as they indicate what type(and size) glass your beverage will be served in. Foodwise, we sampled the Plantanas, the Cacahuetas, some ceviches, some empanadas and some jerk chicken. The Plantanas were(again) served in a tiny basket and accompanied by three fairly large and very tasty sauces. More plantanas PLZ! Why the big bowls of sauce and tiny basket of chips??? The Cacahuatas were served super hot, obviously freshly roasted but while there was plenty of salt on the shells and a lime wedge to squirt, none of the flavor made it to the peanuts. They just tasted like roasted nuts. Now, Mr Peanut Planter knows how to get dem nuts salty in the shell, so it can be done. As for the ceviches, we got the tuna and langosta and maybe I was too absorbed in the conversation around me, but I couldn’t distinguish flavors here and both were the more soupy type of ceviche which I guess I’m not too fond of. My own personal preference there I guess. The item that I really loved tho was the Jerk Chicken. So flavorful covered in delicious crispy skin, I embarrassed myself by asking my hubby if I could suck his bone, and this from a girl that doesn’t like to eat meat on a bone. The problem was they only give you two wings and two legs for this dish. I have fond memories of Jamaican cooks cleaving a whole chicken in two with a huge knife/machete and plopping that half chicken on a paper plate for you. When you share your jerk chicken here, you’re left with a sad, teasing, and oh so unsatisfactory amount of delicious chicken. Trust me. Don’t share. IDK, I would like to try more items here and get more Jerk, but honestly when faced with the option on a Sunday again, I would pick Peche where it’s all day HH and drinks are $ 5 and apps are cheap.

I cannot say enough good things about this new rum bar! This Cuban themed restaurant and bar is all about detail. They hired talent to decorate(graffiti) the walls. Every drink is served in their appropriate stemware. They serve crazy creative rum cocktails, have a rum punch service and delicious eats. Before trying Pleasant Storage Room the only rum drinks I have had were rum and Coke, mojitos and frozen too sweet daiquiris. While they do serve said items they do so with class and also serve an array of other drinks using high quality rums. From the Na Pali Death Toll with citrus wedge lit on fire to the thirst quenching Papa Bois with rum, apple brandy, vodka, fresh lemon and OJ, bitters with a hint of lemon none of the drinks disappointed. The food was also amazing! I sampled the following: Peruvian Snapper — light flaky aji amarillo paired well with the creamy sweet sauce and topped with crunchy corn nuts. Na Pali Death Tuna — fresh chunks of tuna mixed with slices of passion fruit, Thai basil and habanero flavoring. ‘Mitas — popcorn seasoned with chili and polvo de queso served with a lime wedge. Plantain Chips — sweet, crispy and doubles as a serving spoon for the ceviche. Tostones — patties of sweet savory goodness. Gran Cubano — a greasy decadent Cuban sandwich made of ham, melted Swiss, pickles and mustard. Chicharron de Pollo — now if the above didn’t entice you would chicken fried chicken skin win you over? Perfectly seasoned and salted to perfection. I look forward to coming back soon to try the empanadas and street corn. Happy Hour is 5p.m.-7 p.m. and includes $ 5& $ 6 specials on drinks and food.

I attended their friends & family night last evening with my guy & had a heck of a good time trying their delicious rum cocktails & a few bites off their menu. My favorites: The Cuban sandwich & their Churros– oh heavens, holy moly both were exceptional. The Churros had the perfect amount of cinnamon & sugar on the outside & fluffy goodness on the inside — incredible. I could have eaten a dozen of those things, but I didn’t want to be «that girl». Im not a huge Cuban fan but I couldn’t stop eating Pleasant Storage Room’s last night — the bread they use is fantastic. I also dig the sexy 1940’s Cuban vibe they are going for — space is lovely & drinks are well made(they don’t skimp on the rum here). Can’t wait to come back for more Churros & their stiff mojitos. ‘Olé!
