I’ve been here twice. Sad. I miss good Thai food. I miss good service and a nice venue with clean bathrooms. They must make their rolls like a week in advance, they are so NOT fresh. And I guess peanut sauce must cost them a lot, because they only give you a small drip.

Disgusting. I was with a friend who was not familiar with Thai food, so I ordered fresh spring rolls with shrimp, chicken satay, and pad Thai with«meat». The spring roll wrappers were so chewy that the filling fell out when you took a bite. The peanut sauce was sweet and uninteresting – no peanut flavor. The chicken satay came in big chunks on a skewer and was very dark, with the same dull sweet peanut sauce. We wondered if it was really chicken or some other meat. The pad Thai was inedible. It had a funky smell, an orange color, and who knows what the«meat» was. I took 2 bites and was literally repulsed. I was up half the night worrying I would get physically sick. I didn’t but I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. The waiter was polite and very enthusiastic about their pad Thai… yuk.

This review is actually for Sukai Sushi, the new sushi bar that just opened inside Non La. Chef Trey is an «independent contractor,» who hopes to eventually open his own place. When it comes to creativity, he really shines, making all his own sauces(more on the«Smurf sauce» later). He’s got all the sushi faves, plus a fun list of special rolls like the Non La roll. Fresh tuna and salmon are rolled with cream cheese and fresh chopped jalapenos, then deep-fried. That gets re-rolled in a soy wrapper, which Trey feels is more delicate than the usual chewy nori, or black seaweed wrap. It’s drizzled with his own Diablo and teriyaki sauces. A terrific combo of crispy-creamy and spicy-sweet! All the sashimi we tried was so fresh, it glistened. Yellowtail was accented by wrapping a whole blueberry inside, with bits of apple on top. Chef Trey feels the acids and sweetness in some fruits make a good match for the richness of the fish. Then more sashimi: tuna and fresh salmon. There were spicy dabs of Diablo sauce on the tuna, fresh lemon wedges on the salmon(you chew the tart lemon as you eat the fish). Drizzled artistically across the plate, the bright-blue«Smurf sauce» — actually a spiced-up Japanese mayo Trey concocted. It was sushi happy hour(5 – 7, 15% off). We ordered so much stuff, Trey tossed in some ikura and a free salad in between courses. It’s topped with shredded krab and black sesame seeds. He makes his own salad dressing, combining ponzu, teriyaki and Diablo sauces. We ended our meal with a «rose» made of rich, buttery escolar slices with an asparagus stem. And of course, no sushi meal would be complete without Japanese beer! We sat at the sushi bar so we could get the scoop on the dishes. I would give this five stars except for some service issues, I think because he is an independent contractor. Worth braving those for the food for sure. BTW, Trey says Sukai is Japanese for«sky» and that’s also his nickname.

The food here was pretty decent, but it seemed like they were trying to do just a little too much. There were so many things on the menu it was a little overwhelming, and it was all kinds of asian food. I subscribe to the theory that you should pick one thing and do it well and non la was definitely not an example of this. The service was pretty slow for how few people there were in the restaurant but again the food was ok so not a totally terrible experience.

I was soooooooooo happy to see a new Asian restaurant in Lakeway but after trying this place several times I was very disappointed. I am a Phở monster. I’ve eaten it all over the world, and it’s about the broth. This place uses canned Phở broth and does not boil the bones and put in the time to create a delicious broth. They just figure the white people won’t know the difference. WRONG. I have had discussions with the owner about this and why he REFUSES to put the usual condiments on all the tables. No salt. no pepper, no siraccia sauce, soy sauce… NOTHING. Instead you have to ask the waitress for everything. then they take it back to the kitchen when you’re gone. A big waste of time. I’ve tried the Pad Thai. bland and gummy. sushi. small and tasteless. This place is everthing I dislike about the way ethnic restaurants try to second guess they way Americans want their ethnic food. Big portions of Phở, lots of noodles, little flavor. Clean, friendly staff. But, I’d like the food to have more flavor!!!

This place was good for the fact of the convenience factor. Having previously working a job in Lakeway this seemed like a good place to go. I have had the Phở and the Kung Pao, but there is nothing special. The portions are big, especially with the Phở, but it really isn’t necessary. Staff is friendly and food was prompt, but seemed very plain jane. Good for lunch but no need to make a trek out this far if you don’t live close by.

Let me start by telling you that the special came with a free beer. Free beer! In this day and age.. . And not just some day-old PBR, but an ice-cold Shiner in a frosty mug. That being said, the food was alright. I had one of two daily specials, which was a big plate full of sushi. Yummy, but not exactly inspired. The nori seemed kind of tough, but the ginger was good quality. My waitress was AMAZING! Kim(the waitress and former nurse from California by way of Vietnam) was prompt, friendly, and went the extra mile to make sure I had a good experience. I will probably be stopping by again soon to try some other dishes. I wouldn’t recommend the sushi, but the service was absolutely A+!

I liked this place! Thought I had made a new discovery but looks like it’s been open awhile based on reviews. Took my lil old lady friend here and we both got a kick out of the huge straw conical palapa hat on the inside of the restaurant(she says«I could park my van under that!») and all the interior is well done with lanterns and dark wood. The service was very courteous and prompt and the food was great! We both got a different red curry and even tho it was hotter than Hades outside, the curries were comforting and perfectly proportioned for lunch. Have to admit my curry, the Gang Dang(giggles), made my nose sweat and made me wish it was winter outside. My friend’s Panang curry was also good altho the green beans were sorely under cooked and she picked them out. I am always excited to find a new spot in Lakeway and can’t wait to try more of their menu. And you’ll find me there in winter, warming up over a bowl of curry.

Had dinner last night. Service was fine, space was new and clean, but food was not enjoyable. I’m vietnamese and really wanted to finally have a good asian restaurant in the area. The Ban Xeo(vietnamese savory crêpe) was not crispy which is fundamental to the dish. Ordered yam/corn cakes app. which were really dry and tough though the flavor was good. The fried snapper with chili sauce tasted like it was one day from going bad. The final straw was finding black mold on the pan fried noodles with mixed meat/veg. I’ve been working in the restaurant industry for 15 years and don’t complain demanding refunds or confront. Sorry to say we will not be returning.

I’m tired of wasting time writing reviews about the subpar restaurants in Lakeway. I really had high hopes for this place though. It looked clean and inviting, but went down hill the minute we were seated. Our waitress lacked any enthusiasm or warmth, our appetizer and entrees arrived forty minutes after we ordered and only one minute apart. However, the table seated ten minutes after us received their apps and dinner about 15 minutes before ours. What is it with the Asian restaurants around here??? The restaurant maybe had three other tables occupied. The sauce on the husband’s dish«Tornado chicken», was burned and the chicken was poorly manicured. He didn’t touch it and mentioned that it wasn’t good, yet they charged us anyway. We asked that it be removed from the bill and noticed the owner and chef peeking at us angrily from the kitchen. They bedrudgingly removed it from the bill and we got a half hearted invitation from our waitress to give them another try. Not likely. Our chicken satay was bland and my pad se ewe was boring despite the spice; both remained barely touched. All that mediocrity for $ 28. So here we are out $ 28 and still hungry! Just say«No» to Non La.
