Mary’s Hair Studio

Came here to get a fade and trim, ended up with a high and tight haircut that is the worst haircut I have ever had. Not only that but it was $ 30, I can get a fantastic haircut for $ 8 – 15 where they actually know how to cut hair. This place is a huge rip off and the stylists are poor at best. Oh, and the stylists all seemed drunk or high.

I moved to Austin last August and have been trying to find a new place to get highlights. I am pretty low maintenance and have a difficult time finding a hair salon that will listen to me when I say «I will never, curl, blow dry etc. my hair.» I find this frustrating since I listen to clients and always do what is best for them. Well, Samantha surprised me when she 100% listened to me and shaped my hair and gave me perfect highlights that will blend as my hair grows out. She also let me know what products she would recommend to make my hair not as frizzy and compliment my easy going routing. A+. She also had a charming personality. It’s nice to spend a few hours with someone who is positive and kind spirited. I would absolutely recommend going here. And they use Aveda products which was a pleasant surprise.

I love love love this place! So close to work and they get me in as a walk in right away. Today was a pedicure and although the lady there was busy, they called another employee who walked down to do my pedicure. Excellent service and I highly recommend them!

This place should not be listed under nail salons. I got a mani-​pedi here last week (the special was a free mani when you buy a pedi) and it was the worst I’ve ever had. Sweet girl, but she should not be doing nails. When I learned they charge $ 45 for a pedicure, I was thinking it was going to be amazing for that price (my regular nail salon charges $ 35 for a deluxe and they bend over backwards with what they do). My toes were barely groomed, only clipped and cuticles pushed back. After an extremely brief massage on my feet (not calves too like I’m used to), she put the polish on… which I do better myself. The manicure was exactly the same way, the polish job seemed worse on my nails, it was globbed up and, again, I do a better job myself. The polish on my nails started chipping a couple HOURS later and the polish on my toes after a few days, which usually doesn’t start coming off for at least a month at my regular salon. I’m sure this place does a good job with hair, as I’ve read with other reviews, so they need to stick with what they know.

I have been getting my hair done here since I was a little tot! Shana has been doing my hair for the last few years and I’m always happy with the gentle care she gives, because I have such a tender head. My hair is always looking as good as ever when I leave and I stock up on all of my Aveda products here. I always get my eyebrows waxed here as well, because the wax they use is also gentle on the skin. Mary is a wonderful, sweet lady who always greets you as you walk in! I love supporting a local family businesses (Shana is Mary’s niece and another stylist, Diamond, is another niece who is also fabulous and talkative!).

Mary has been cutting my hair 17 + years. She does a great job every time. She cuts a number of family members as well and her memory is great. She often informs me about what is going on! The place is relaxed and they stay on schedule.

I am so, so, so sorry to write this review. Sorry because I work nearby and have come here for occasional manicures (and once, an updo) over the years. Never been moved enough by the experience to write a review, either thumbs up or down. AND I’m sorry because I know the owner is going through a rough time right now, health-​wise, and she’s a lovely person, and I just cringe at the thought of her reading this. Or losing business I’m sure she really needs right now.
So I waited at least a week after my mani-​pedi to write this. But I feel like it sucks that someone else would have my experience there simply because I was too conflict avoidant to say anything critical about it. (Yeah, I know, Unilocal is not the best way of being non-​conflict-​avoidant. Shut up.)
My mani-​pedi was awful. $ 65 plus tip (omg yes I tipped) of awful.
At least the cute girl who did it was very gentle, careful, clean and not hurtful. I give her that. The tools were clean and the area was clean.
It’s just that Brittany seemed so unsure of what she was doing; she didn’t really clean up my cuticles, or make my hands and feet look and feel substantially better than when I walked in. I’m hard on my hands (do jiu jitsu) and the skin was very dry, flaky, peeling. My feet are calloused. They came in that way and they walked out that way.
And *grrrrrr* I told her just clear on the toes… fine, but at least two coats please? and don’t apply polish over nails that have been swiped with lotion! clean the nails off with more polish remover first! And on the fingernails– I wanted a pale pink. How about a base coat? The polish was so drippy on the brush that I had it all over my cuticles and she didn’t tidy them up with a Q-​tip or anything. No second coat, no top coat, just some commentary about the next client on her schedule already being there (I had been at her station for an hour and 15 min and I needed to leave too.)
I went upstairs to my office and took off the fingernail polish, redid them with a coat of clear, and left.
Poor Brittany, I know because you told me that usually you do hair. Stick to the hair. Mary, doll, I love ya, good luck with your health issues, but when your manicurist isn’t available, please just say so, don’t put a hair person in the mani chair.
And please don’t make me feel guilty about this review by contacting me and begging me to come back. I usually go elsewhere for mani-​pedi services and I will continue to do so. I can get a mani-​pedi that’s WORLDS better at US Spa by my house. I’m sorry to have to write this. I have had good experiences with hairdos here… just won’t be back for the manicures.

Had my first haircut at Mary’s a few weeks ago. I walked in over the noon hour and got in in 10 minutes.
The stylist asked lots of questions and was very competent, although conversation petered out very quickly. (I’m not one for gabbing with my stylist, but sitting there for 20 minutes with no conversation whatsoever feels a little awkward.) She did her best to conform to my wishes, and I’m overall pleased with the cut I got. They don’t advertise their prices, though, and I felt a little sticker shock when I had to pay $ 30 (plus tip) for a simple, men’s haircut, especially since the surroundings aren’t particularly plush (and you don’t get a free beer as with some other shops in town). They do offer you a bottled water, but that’s a pretty expensive bottle of water.
I think I’d go back if I were in a pinch, but I don’t think it will be my regular place.

mary’s is great. i’ve finally found the perfect place to get my eyebrows done. i walked in and it took less than 5 minutes to get seen. now i’m there every two weeks. :)
