4.9STARS! These guys know there stuff. GEAR offers everything you could ever need in video gear. Very affordable on rental prices and they’ll always work with you if you need the gear a little longer. I love working with Kirk and Aaron on the camera side. Those two are super friendly and always quick to give you their two cents. Their rental process is simple. Be responsible, pay on time and return when promised. You don’t need to live in the area to rent like that other place. No hassle rentals by far! Prices are super fair. I love renting the Intel-A-Jib and I get it for a flat $ 150 for the weekend which is awesome because I can make that make in one hour or operating the thing. They don’t have a lot of dslr lenses to rent but what they do have is worth using. Their more old school and haven’t adopted all the DSLR tech stuff quite yet but they are getting there. They’ve come a long way in the past two years with the DSLR movement. The store front is aged and needs some dusting and presentation. Sure there’s not a lot to see in video gear, tape and backdrops but some fresh posters, rental options and setups would make better for the atmosphere. If you have a big gig to do in the central Texas area this is the place to rent. Hands down. Enjoy!

These folks are hardworking, knowledgeable and honest. They get you what you need and help brainstorm when things get complicated. Very reasonable rules and procedures. Treat them respectfully and they’ll return the sentiment.

I find it hard to believe that some reviewers had a poor experience working with GEAR; I was well taken care of and because of GEAR, my film shoot was able to continue and ultimately finish, no matter how obstacles came before me and my team. As a new guy to the film industry, Kirk and Toby went above and beyond to explain what is necessary and what is not. And they filled out the necessary paperwork in a timely manner so my crew would be able to retrieve the equipment the following day. On set of our shoot, our generator wasn’t working properly, so Toby from GEAR drove in his GEAR truck to our location at 9:30PM to deliver a new generator and stayed until our lighting situation was fixed. GEAR closes at 5:30PM, but in an effort to save our production, came four hours after closing time to alleviate our situation. I have nothing but gratitude for Toby and the other great employees at GEAR, and you’d be a fool for turning down their service for another equipment rental company.

Gear has always taken care of me. Kirk and his staff will go out of their way to help you and are knowledgeable about what they do. The store is nice to take a look around too in case you are out of gaff tape, want a two prong to three prong plug converter, or other interesting things you don’t find everywhere that are helpful with video.

We had a last minute need for a quality camera to film our Christmas charity ‘Wassail’ event, and we found Kirk and the folks at GEAR to be highly professional, going out of their way to ensure that we had everything we needed — and after the charity aspect of the event was explained(sending money to kids in the Sudan), they very generously donated their equipment for the weekend. What a great Austin business! A big thank you from me, and all the wassail crew.

I had a last minute commercial shoot and Kirk was really great about taking care of my rental order. I got exactly what I needed – all at the last minute. I don’t know of too many places where you can get everything you need!!! They typically close at 5:30pm, but worked with me and my crazy schedule to get me what I needed that afternoon, staying late(past 6:00pm). The day of the production, we had to make an emergency run to Gear and they had everything we needed, ready to go! If you ever need film equipment this is the place to go. They even have discounts for students(talk to Toby)!

The employee’s at GEAR are by far some of the rudest people that I’ve ever encountered at any business, anywhere. After my last rental experience, I can confidently say that I will never rent from them again. Do yourself a favor and rent from Mopac Media or Omega Broadcast instead.

Rudest people! I went in to return equipment and they were so rude about it. They accused us of improperly wrapping the headphone chord around the headphones(we never even used the headphones or mixer that they gave us because the mixer was shitty). When I told them that we never even took their headphones out of the bag they assured me that we must have because they would«never be that stupid». Then they proceeded to talk about how they always rent out to «stupid apes» and they kept talking about how stupid the people are that they rent out to… all in front of me as if I weren’t even in the room. There is no need to be that rude.

They have good rates on generators of many sizes. They are the only«gear» I have ever used. But they are really NICE generators(mostly quiet little Hondas) for cheap. They exude professionalism, which is sadly kinda rare in laid-back Austin. They have the mainstream stuff; they have the tiny widgets. It will be ready when you show up. If you are using it for business, you can jump through some hoops and get it tax-free. From all experiences, they maintain their stuff very well. You can rent a whole truck of film lighting and other support gear for what seems like a ridiculously low price. Truck included. Or, you know… generators.

Gear is a video and film production rental shop. They rent lighting fixtures, grip equipment and that sort of stuff for movie productions. If you’re in film, video or photography you should probably know about these guys. I have no idea who«C.T.»(the previous reviewer) encountered at Gear. Maybe that experience was awhile ago. I’ve had nothing but good experiences with the people here when I’ve rented grip equipment, sandbags, generators and kino-flo lights over the past year or two. Gear stocks a wide range of expendables including gaffers tape, gels/filters, foam-core and other goodies. My only complaint is that they don’t really cater to the rental needs of still photographers, but I understand the market for that in Austin is limited.

Home of the rudest sons-a-bitches ever to walk the earth. Sure, they house Austin’s best selection of professional film and video equipment, but they’re ridiculously over-priced and inexcusably rude. Only rent from here if you have no other choice. For a town that hates Wal-Mart so much, it’s a mystery to me as to why those same people will not find the same faults with Gear.
