You can get a gift for anyone here. I’ve bought several pairs of my favorite copper earrings from an artist at the Renaissance Market. They’re great quality and they’re seriously reasonably priced. I haven’t had problems with jewelry falling apart. If you have, most artists will fix it for you, most likely for free. The vendors here care about their crafts and are an important part of the Austin community. I stop by whenever I’m on the drag. In addition to earrings, you can find artisan windchimes, sweaters, scarves, cool shirts, skirts, necklaces, bracelets, bags, soap, glassware, paintings… pretty much anything for anyone for much less than you’d pay at a store, and you’re supporting Austin artists. I can’t say enough good things about it.

seriously, it’s not just for hippies. there are several really talented artists in this space every weekend, many of whom are willing to cut a deal on multiple purchases and/or return customers. even more vendors show up around christmas, sxsw, etc. as for quality issues, that may be, but please realize that every individual booth is a separate business, so just because you had issues with one vendor doesn’t mean there aren’t some gems out there waiting for you. it’s also currently the ONLY place in Texas to find one-of-a-kind items from Unoriginal Sinner– who, if you hadn’t guessed, is me. come say hello!

While I have never bought anything at this market, I will highly attest to its coolness. What other city has people selling high quality crafts in the middle of all of it? They are always there. They are always friendly. Something always catches my eye. My sister once bought a painting for a 50 bucks here… and since our whole family wins the thrifty folks of the year awards, the 50 bucks spent should more then attest to the quality of the pictures. Its a fun time outside. Check it.

Austin has many things that are unique to our fair city. One of them is the Austin Renaissance Market on 23rd Street, which is the only continuously operated open-air crafts market in the United States. On any given day, you’ll see a local artist selling jewelry, photographs, paintings, or whatever else their craft may be. You can kind of think of it as a farmer’s market, but with art. The market started in the 1970’s, and the city has actually set aside the space for it to be held. It is open 7 days a week, with Saturday and Sunday being the biggest days. Another thing that makes Austin what it is.
