2012 Review #312: I’m sort of between 4 and 5 stars. I actually came upon this business at the Cherry Creek farmer’s market. I’d seen them before but hadn’t bought anything. Since it was the last market of the season, I figured I should try some sausage besides that at Edward’s. I can’t find the name of, I’m assuming the owner, but man is he great. He is so kind, so positive, thanks every customer over and over for their patronage and their patience, and he’s just great. He wears a Bavarian hat with a feather in it and everything. He’s one pair of lederhosen away from being a walking«Flug zum Deutschland!» ad. I waited while some other customers were being helped and looked at the offerings; there are traditional German, Austrian, and Hungarian offerings, as well as other things like Chorizo, and chicken sausages like chicken, spinach, and tomato. I decided to go with ka(e)sewurst, which is a traditional German sausage studded with cheese. The owner very kindly said«I would tell you that you can simmer these, or grill them in a pan, but I don’t need to because you pronounced kaesewurst so beautifully. Sprechen sie Deutsch?» The charm was not lost on me. The sausages were around $ 9, and that seems like a lot because there are only 4/package, but they are easily each enough for 2 people. Finally we got to try them for dinner recently. The mix of spices, which the website says are imported from the appropriate country, were really flavorful and the meat was really tender. There were moments where some of the spices were a bit much for me but not enough to be distracting. The cheese was perfect because it melted, but didn’t spray out violently, which i was afraid of. No one wants molten cheese spraying around. I’m surprised kaesewurst isn’t more popular because it’s like a cheese dog within a hotdog, who doesn’t want that? If you haven’t tried one, Bavarian Sausage Express is a great place to start. They only sell at local markets, and although the farmer’s market season is over, you can still get them at the Highlands Ranch Holiday Market, or by ordering directly from their website. I don’t know if I’ll order anything over the winter, but I’ll definitely stop by again when farmer’s markets open back up.
