El Portal is a great Mexican food restaurant, and easily one of the best sit-down restaurants in Auburn. The food is delicious, and is just as good, if not better than, the Mexican restaurants in larger cities. One of my favorite things about El Portal is that they don’t skimp on the alcohol in the mixed drinks, and they have drink specials a few nights of the week.

El portal is authentic and delicious! The best spot in auburn to eat – bar none. My faves are the El Portal salad(spinach, lettuce, avocado, pico de gallo, shrimp…), chimichanga de camerone, chicken salad, and of course I live for the comp chips n salsa.

I have visited quite a few small rural town Mexican joints in my travels and have always been underwhelmed. Much to my surprise, El Portal serves up some decent food! The flavors and food quality is on-par with the majority of Mexican joints in larger cities in the west. Even our guest who was visiting from the Mexican food mecca of southern California gave it a thumbs up. My family will definitely be back for more!

Outstanding food and service! A must stop for the Carne Asada plate. I also got a side of shrimp… I can honestly say they were delicious. I will definitely come back.

Had a bean burrito, rice and guacomole. All were good. The staff was friendly and attentive.

My first time here should have been more impressive. I ordered a combination that came with two chicken tacos and a beef tamale. There was very little chicken in one taco, and very little lettuce in both tacos along with little cheese. The tamale I got had bit of the chicken on top of it like the cook got lazy and thought it looked better on the tamale. The quality of the tamale was low. It wasn’t cooked thoroughly and needed more enchilada sauce on it to be authentic. The only saving grace that I’ve seen is they serve some mean margaritas. The waiters and waitresses are nice enough for Auburn. On a side note, I was a part of a party of eight and the cooks completely forgot to prepare the first order that was taken by the waitress. They didn’t get a simple chimichanga out to the table until everyone was done eating. I will come back someday to give them a second chance.

My husband and I really enjoy El Portal in Auburn. The Margaritas are top notch. We enjoy Taco Tuesdays as well as Margarita Wednesdays. Sometimes it’s hard to decide which night to go.
