On this day a Senator that worked tirelessly to make sure ALL Americans have quality health care died… Senator Ted Kennedy. Unfortunately he died before that dream could become a reality. So today I dedicate this review of the Center for Black Women’s Wellness in his honor. After losing my job and health care over a year ago I knew I was in big trouble… having both Multiple Sclerosis AND insulin controlled diabetes, the likelihood of me finding affordable health care was NOT going to happen. Desperate, armed with Google I started doing research on places I could go here in Atlanta for a checkup and to get my insulin prescription re-filled…I found THECENTERBLACKWOMEN’S WELLNESS. I called them and set an appointment — the soonest appointment was over a month away. BUT a month later I was there with bells on for my desperately needed exam. After a through exam from the Doctor, she filled all my prescriptions and sent me on my way after I scheduled my follow-up. As I was checking out at the front desk I asked the lady how much I owed…“NOTHING” she replied«this service is FREE.» I pulled out my last $ 20 and said«Here, I would have had to paid this much of a co-pay even WITH insurance». She explained it was needed, it would help pay for some of the costs. A few days ago I received my lab results in the mail… as I sat at my computer on Saturday googling«how to understand lab results» I got a call from the Center…“Ms. Yvonne, did you get your lab results? Well the doctor wants to schedule you to come in next week to review the results, she needs to adjust your medication”…I was thankful! In a time when people((mostly people WITH health insurance)) are so hatefully against health care reform… THECENTERBLACKWOMEN’S WELLNESS… is a BLESSING. I am so thankful for this center and the ANGELS of volunteer nurses and doctors that work here… and to Sen. Ted«liberal lion» Kennedy your presences in the Senate will truly be missed!
