I saw this dentist in August 2013. His demeanor was off-​putting. I should have listened to my gut, but he’s in the basement of my office building– I could see him on my lunch hours– so I decided to go through with some fillings. This was a tremendous mistake.
He decided to do two fillings on opposite sides of my mouth. I told him I usually have trouble getting numb… he rolled his eyes. He started working before I was numb. He didn’t believe me when I told him I could feel the teeth… he kept drilling. He wouldn’t stop. Finally he struck a nerve so that I jittered up in the chair; he threw down his drill, ripped off his mask and started *raving* at me like a madman, telling me that I was a terrible patient; that it wasn’t possible I wasn’t numb, I was either lying or severely deluded, and that my teeth were in awful condition because I was such a terrible patient other dentists likely refused to take care of me properly. He shoved a mirror in my face, showed me my hollowed-​out teeth and said «Would it be possible for me to get this far if you weren’t numb?»
I was terrified of the man, but my teeth weren’t filled; if I had walked out, I would have had to find another dentist within 20 – 30 minutes or the pain would have become excruciating. I felt totally helpless… I was weeping in the chair. He eventually finished the work and I ran out of there like bat out of he||.
I’ve never had an experience like that before. It seems that Dr. Scannell may have once been a fine dentist… but I suspect it’s time for him to retire. Avoid him.

I came here after a terrible experience with Dental Once Associates (
). The office is located inside the SunTrust plaza building, and can be tough to find. Just go through the doors to the left of Morton’s and ask the security desk to direct you. The dentist office will validate parking in the SunTrust Plaza Garage across the street (turn in on Peachtree Center Ave.) which is your best parking option.
On my first visit they took x-​rays and did the normal cleaning. I have some special problems with my teeth — my roots are deteriorated after 5 years of orthodontics. Hygienists tend to freak out when they see my x-​rays, but this one’s reaction was mild compared to past experiences. Definitely more professional.
Teeth cleaning was painless — okay, when is a cleaning really painless? But it wasn’t a horror film either. For polishing, they use the new salt spray pressure washing technique which I despise, but my hygienist said it not only polishes, it clears away stains like coffee and wine. I can deal. Overall I love my hygienist, and I like that the office has made it a point to keep me with the same one from visit to visit.
Dr. Scannell is AWESOME. He told me he was an engineer before he was a dentist, and because I’m an engineer, I had immediate trust in him. He comes off as a great guy-​someone you’d like to get a beer with. And even though it always takes a few minutes for him to get to me after the cleaning, when he’s consulting me I feel like the top priority. On my first visit he asked me why I changed dentists. He listened to my answers and gave thoughtful responses, and discussed how his practice works. I really appreciated his reassurance that I would be taken care of well.
Dr. Scannell has offered several different treatment plans for my teeth problems, none of which I had ever heard recommended to me before. I had always been told I would need implants (~$ 5000 per tooth!!!), but Dr. Scannell told me about other ways I could keep my own teeth longer. He also consulted me on whether or not I liked my smile, and we discussed options on that topic too. I never EVER have felt pressured to go with any of the treatment plans offered (I haven’t done any of them yet) but I really appreciate the time the dentist and hygienist put into making sure I was informed to make the best decision possible for myself. He also knew exactly what my insurance would cover and what it would not cover, which I loved!
The office has very early morning appointments (starting at 7:30am) so you can make it to work without having to take any time off, but they do not have appointments on Fridays or weekends as far as I’m aware.
If my friends needed a dentist, this is where I’d send them, hands down.
