My brother and I came to the Smokehouse for Memorial Day weekend to experience some type of bbq cuisine. And we were not let down! The place is a big hall full of picnic tables and benches. There’s an outdoor patio in front, and another outdoor area out back, for fresh air, sunlight, and kids to run around. There is no table service. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by the beverage counter. And food is purchased toward the back. Is this what its like in Texas or Louisiana? If so, its awesome! We ordered chicken, ribs and beef, with fries on the side. We wanted to order more meat. But the server recommended that we start out with what we had, and continue later if necessary. Good thing, because we were stuffed! Everything tasted so good. And nothing was oily or greasy. Then we washed everything down with whisky and soda, served in mason jars. Luckily, we got there at the perfect time in the late afternoon. By the end of our meal, I noticed that the line to order food had built up to a sizable amount. But the meats are already waiting for you to pick and choose. So there’s no wait time when you do get to order. We will definitely return to try out the other tempting meats that we missed out on the first time!

Oh man. I was thinking, I really want a dry brisket, like, so dry I can’t put it down my throat without feeling like I just ate captain crunch without milk. I was fortunate to see they updated their mac and cheese from an oily block of cheese product, to just oil and noodles. Reminds me of when I was poor. I love it! Love the ice drinks, not a huge fan of when they accidentally get alcohol in them. It’s great for those who want to spend lot of money on something that they want to feel bad about. Five stars!!!

I’ve been here a few times now and I must say the first time I didn’t like the food it was too dry but loved the atmosphere. I came here again yesterday with a part of about 10 – 15 for my bday and had a blast. As per other reviews, I requested a table somewhat away from the live band since people said it was really loud so we go a nice corner table which worked out well since we had kiddos in our party. The food was much better than last time although the potato wedges and Mac and cheese were subpar. Meats-chicken and short ribs were amazing, drinks are always great here and just an overall good time.

Not only is this place great since we live in the area, but it is a great place even if you’re not in Astoria but looking for a good smokehouse. The beer selection changes and always has great selections. The cocktails are good, too! Loved the pulled pork!

The beer selections here are amazing. They also let you taste the beer before you get them if you ask! My friends told me that their whiskey selections are great too. I also got a BBQ chicken(only 6!) and cole slaw(super big portion for $ 4). The bbq chicken is hands down the most tender piece of bbq chicken I’ve ever had! Came here with a few friends on Friday night. They serve food all night long. Definitely a good spot to visit if you get hungry at night or just want to grab a drink and have a good time with friends!

Oh, dear. I really, REALLY wanted to like this place. It’s a similar style to that of my all-time FAVORITEBBQ joint in NYC, Hometown in Williamsburg, but the quality just isn’t there. I seem to recall a lyric of the famed hip hop classic«Rappers Delight» that goes something like, «The macaroni’s soggy, the peas are mushed and the chicken tastes like wood.» Well, there were no peas but I can tell you that the only redeemable quality about the food we experienced was the brisket. For $ 15 apiece, the cocktails were quite watered down as well. Fortunately we had great company to make the place tolerable. I’ll be heading to Butcher Bar for my next BBQ experience in the area. The portions are tiny but at least it’s full of flavor.

First time in this barn style beer hall BBQ joint. It is a great spot for groups and pet owners. The place is large by comparison to other place in down town Manhattan. Here is Astoria food and beverage outlet tends to be bigger. You want in, there is the outside patio where dogs can stay. You need to go to the meat counter where they have the menu and you are charged by the pound. The price will be on the menu. Chicken is charged by per piece, and pork ribs are sold by either a rack or half a rack. Half a rack is about 5 ribs. There is a bar next to the cashier and meat counter. Water is free, and the varieties of BBQ sauces. I like the BBQ, the beef brisket is very tender, the pork ribs are favourful. The salad is way too big, for $ 8 you get a giant size bowl of salad, it is to share definitely. There is live music in the weekend too. A lovely spot in Astoria. Will be back for sure.

My boyfriend & I were so excited to come here, but we were kind of let down. We came on a Saturday night & waited in line for food for like. A half hour. There are no waitresses, you have to wait in line & get a tray. Then when we got to the front, we didn’t realize that you order by the pound so trying to figure out how much food we wanted took a little bit of back & forth with the guy serving us — we then understood why the line moved so slow. By the time we found a table & sat down, our food was cold & to be honest, it was only alright. We were both extremely let down. We’re going to give it another try on a less busy day. They do have an extensive beer menu & a bunch of fun cocktails. Our drinks were great despite the mediocre food.

Seriously underwhelming. My friends and I were looking for a lunch place that wouldn’t have a ridiculous wait on a weekend, and one of them suggested the Strand. We showed up around 1:30 on a Saturday, and it was relatively empty(though they have a huge space so that explains part of it). You order at the counter and then seat yourself at a table with your tray of food. We tried an array of meats and sides — brisket, pork shoulder(they were out of pulled pork — for shame!), bacon, and baby back ribs along with cornbread, slaw, and mac and cheese. Almost everything was cold(all of the food is pre-prepared and sitting on the counter…) and the only two meats I even somewhat enjoyed were the brisket and baby back ribs. The pork shoulder wasn’t good at all and the bacon was mediocre. Sides weren’t much better — mac and cheese wasn’t cheesy at all(it tasted like they had slathered some oil or butter on the cooked noodles) and the cornbread, while okay in taste, had the texture of pound cake. About the only thing they have going for them is that the space is pretty cool — really big, industrial, and airy, and I’ve heard they do live music and other events, which I could see being a fun experience. The food, though, is glorified cafeteria fare. I won’t be back.

Generous selection of beer. Great place for large groups and live bands during the weekend. I didn’t get to try their food, but will definitely adventure out here again to see what the fuss is all about on their BBQ. Plus: Bartender is heavy handed on the liquor. Win-win for everybody. Summary: Live Music, large space and easily comfortable for a group of friends, and generous portions of booze. A solid 3.5!

So wonderfully country casual that I never want to leave. Beer variety is great, and if you’re not sure, ask for a taste. The bartenders are more than happy to help. Come hungry and order some good BBQ, don’t forget the cornbread. They will give you a piece the size of your head. The live music just adds to the appeal of this rustic, down home gem. It’s just happiness.

Good food and great beer/location. The BBQ has been a little hit or miss for me, personally. Babyback ribs were fine but not as flavorful as I like. Very moist though! Spare ribs were the opposite — tons of delicious flavor but DRY. The brisket is definitely my favorite choice. Regular brisket is solid but their pulled brisket… holy crap was that good. I wasn’t sold on their food before I got the pulled brisket but now I am. The beer is very impressive! You don’t always expect a BBQ place to worry about having good beer, but this place delivers. Great craft selection, and since you order the beer separately from the food, you don’t have to worry about long lines! Weirdly they don’t let you keep a tab open, which kind of threw me, but really, it’s not that hard to hand over your card every time, plus then you have it on you to go get food later. The interior is wonderful — very spacious, with long beer hall-style tables and a nice rustic vibe. We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon and it was surprisingly empty, which of course I’m perfectly fine with. I noticed a small stage which looks like it’s used for live music, and for Tuesday trivia! The trivia itself was pretty good. They only have three rounds, plus a bonus question, which seems pretty short. But it runs pretty smoothly, and the first prize is a $ 50 gift card! The only downside of trivia is that the guy who runs it is apparently not too great at sticking to a schedule. He was 45 minutes late yesterday, and my buddy who’s been to trivia before says it’s a bit of a habit with him.

Great service but mediocre food. BBQ ribs — a little bland, wouldn’t go back for this. Lamb ribs — very tasty. Brisket — only meat I actually loved once I added bbq sauce and hot sauce. Cornbread — goes good with the meat. Pico de gallo — was delicious and tasted great with the cornbread. Mac & cheese — awful. Not cheesy, needed salt, would never order again. I wanted to love this place but it’s really nothing special but a good place to hang with friends and listen to live music.

I’m heading to Texas in a few days, so the anticipation of real Southern bbq is probably biasing my review, but even so I think the Strand deserves a solid 3 stars. My church group came here after Easter service because of the space, which is really large with huge tables. There was also some live country music, which wasn’t very loud, but possibly because it was still the afternoon. The food itself was just okay. The cornbread and mac and cheese were both underwhelming. The cornbread($ 3) is a big portion, but it’s on the dry side, while the mac and cheese($ 5) was not cheesy at all and didn’t come with the breadcrumbs on top, at least for me. The chicken($ 6) was actually pretty good though, and I liked the different homemade sauces(maple jalapeño, BBQ, maple mustard). It was cash only, but wasn’t always, and may not be in the future. Good if you have a large party, but stick to the chicken if you have to eat here.

The meat looks much tastier and juicier behind the see through glass than on the plate. The pastrami was dry. My friends got other type of meats and said it was dry too. The chicken was the winner and tasted not bad and wasn’t dry. The sides were good. The homemade pickles were yummy and so were the string beans. Service was a bit slow hence long line. They had enough space to have 2 – 3 people cutting and weighing meat. The space was definitely large enough for a group of 20 or more people. The décor was nice as well.

The meats are now more expensive than they were three years ago, and a few key things were lacking — the brisket and ribs were not seasoned very much or at all — it seems like they expect the patron to use as much or little sauce as they like when I would prefer a much more guided experience. Additionally, something as simple as cutting the brisket across the grain to make it less chewy was not done, and it was given to us as an unseemly chunk. Who wants to eat stringy, tough brisket that takes forever to chew? Mighty Quinn’s is infinitely superior.

Saw a lot of reviews saying the food was bland. First off, it’s hard to please the mouths of salt level tolerance of every person and the seasoning and barbecue sauce on the table aren’t there just for looks. It’s there to use. With the sauce, the brisket and pulled pork were really good. If you’re sensitive to fat, probably not your thing. There’s also the cowboy candy which was pickled chili peppers, some sweet and some super painfully hot ones. Nicely pairs with the meat, but be careful! Only one dish I was a bit disappointed with and it was the short ribs. The meat itself was really dry. In short, you’ll like this place if you’re with a group of friends that don’t mind loud environments and know how to use barbecue sauce and seasoning :).

Came here the other day for a few drinks and food. We had some of their mac and cheese and a pitcher of hard cider. The mac and cheese was very good. It must have had a little bit of spice in it, and the pasta was cooked perfectly, which surprised me at a beer hall. The corn bread was also good, hard to mess that up. The pitcher was reasonably priced. It was ~$ 26 for about 4 – 5 drinks worth. Pretty good deal. They have outdoor seating for the summer, and I look forward to coming back when it is warmer.

The bartenders are quick and helpful in suggestions. I really liked my coke and Jack Daniels fire. But the line for food can be long. The reason is that some people in the line like to stand around talking to the people in line. By the time you get back to your table, your steak is no longer hot. I had the ribeye, and it was only ok. It had fat on all the ends. It would have been better if it was hot… at a restaurant that wasn’t self service. The steak fries were really good though. Price for steak was reasonable. 1 lb steak for $ 15. Beer was a little pricey. Bourbon were cheap though. The crowd seemed ok. Friendly banter in the line for food and random conversations with people. It is an ok place, but not something to go out of your way for though.

100% a place I will be coming back too. Definitely a beer bar but with all the open space cannot wait to come back in the summer and utilize all the out door seating. Love the mason jar drinks and the picnic tables. Only got the Mac and cheese and it was good. Honestly was a little cold but still. So happy to stumble across the Strand and will be returning.

Fun place! Came for a drink and to meet up with a group for a birthday party. The Strand was huge. Loved the picnic table set up. Seems like a great place for parties and large groups. Great cocktails. Didn’t get a chance to try any food but it looked like a lot had sold out so if that tells you anything. Would definitely come back!

So– yea. This place is just not for me. I came here once before when it first opened because I wanted to check it out, and I didn’t like it then — I only came here a second time because a friend wanted to have his birthday meet up there. It really all depends on what you like when you go out. The place is huge, I will give them that. Best way to describe it– It’s like a school cafeteria with the lights dimmed down. Long«picnic» style tables with benches lined up all over the place, a buffet style food area, and a loud crappy band playing. Ok– the first time I went the band was crappy, this time they were alright– but if you don’t like country style music then I’d suggest staying away lol I’m not a big country fan but I can handle it in small doses. On to the drinks– I was disappointed that they didn’t have any Captain Morgan behind the bar. I had to get a gin and tonic instead. The house gin was pretty decent but they could have filled up my mason jar a bit more for the ten bucks it cost. I get it– it’s a «beer» place– so you’re better off getting a beer. The tables are also really close together, so when you get up you have to make sure you’re not kicking the person at the table behind you when you swing your legs over. It’s kinda annoying. The bathrooms are pretty cool though– they remind me of some old west type of set up. Ok on to the food. Sorry but– the food has NO flavor whatsoever! First time I went, I had the brisket and it was just a flavorless texture in my mouth. Thinking that maybe since I came here a long time ago that the food might be better now– this time I had the macaroni and cheese and a piece of corn bread. I wasn’t that hungry this visit but I wanted a little something. Looks are deceiving because all the sides look so tasty! It’s a total tease. I was reading some of the other reviews people posted about the food here and they must be drunk or something when they eat it– because if they think that has flavor and it’s «good» they are mistaken. I will say one thing– the corn bread is good though lol I won’t touch the slabs of meat they have though. Every piece of meat I see walk past me on trays had grease and mountains of clear fat hanging off them. Definitely not for me. But! If you like fatty greasy meat– then give it a try! Honestly I’m being generous with the three stars here– I’d like to give them two. But like I said– it really all depends on what kind of places you prefer. So in a nut shell– if you like crowded places that remind you of your old school cafeteria, lines of people at a buffet table for some flavorless, fatty, greasy meat, live and loud sometimes crappy country music, then this place is for you. Like I said– I know lots of people who like set ups like that– and they thoroughly enjoy it. So it’s your call lol Oh a plus– they have an out door area in the back but I think it’s only open during nice weather seasons. It’s pretty back there though and you can take your drinks outside and relax. For now on– I’ll pass on this spot unless I have to go for another birthday meet up lol Go check it out and decide for yourselves though.

First of all, the atmosphere/look inside is amazing. And it’s SPACIOUS. You never have to wait in line to get a table, it’s super casual and fun– great for large groups. The first few times I went here(last year) the food was meh. Which was disappointing because it’s such a fun place to be. The meat and cornbread used was overly dry, and nothing seemed flavorful. That said, I’ve been back in the last month and they’ve figured their food sitch out. Everything tastes amazing and I keep eating to the point of physical discomfort. Which is both great and terrible. I will dock a star b/c they have a lot of bands come in that aren’t very good and the sound is super loud– but at weird times like Sunday morning when you’re nursing a hangover and you just want to hang out with your friends. I’m not saying it has to be dead quiet, but maybe just turn the volume down from a 10 to a 5.

Such a great place to drink and hang out wit large groups ! Came here on a Saturday Night, it was crowded(60+ people) but there were still tables available. The Strand is a dimly lit– restaurant with long wood tables, a great bar and a live band. We walked in and chose whatever table we wanted. Instead of waiters, you go up to the bar/kitchen and order what you want. This time we came for drinks. I’ve heard the cornbread is amazing and their food is delicious. The noise level was loud even after the live band stopped playing, so be prepared to yell across the table. The Strand is a great place for large friend groups to chill and have a good meal. Definitely will be back when I’m in the area.

I’ve known about this place for several years now, and any Astorian you meet will inevitably preach about the wonder that is The Strand. After hearing about it again and again and again, I finally made it here, and I have to say… it was ok. Maybe some of my opinion is slightly affected by over-hype but to be honest, the food just didn’t impress as much as I had hoped. I ordered the lamb ribs with a side of brussels sproats and mac n’ cheese. Out of the 3, the meat should’ve really been my favorite, right? But it wasn’t. The lamb was well cooked and fall-off-the-bone tender but there was barely any flavor! It was disappointingly bland, and I needed to dip each bite in BBQ sauce for me to really enjoy it. The mac n’ cheese was also another victim of a lack of seasoning. A touch more salt(or salt, period.) and more cheese(mixed with additional liquid) would’ve been welcomed. The best thing I tried were the brussels sprouts. They were practically mush, but I loved it. It was super flavorful and cooked with pork and what I think was andouille sausage. Aside from that, The Strand is perfect for large groups. With 2 of the more well renowned beer gardens in the city, Astoria boasts the kind of space that’s typically found outside of Manhattan. I also came on a night where there was live music. It added a nice Texan vibe to the joint but if the live music is always that loud, don’t expect to enjoy any conversation with your meal.

This is not the place to come sit, have a conversation, and have good barbeque. But come with the proper expectations and you may not be as blindsided like me. What to expect in ambiance, as I have on my Saturday night visit: — Live band playing country music — Music so loud that you can’t hear anyone unless they’re sitting next to you or you want to start a shouting match — 20 minute line to get food — Service is probably slower because the servers can’t hear you — Self seating on communal picnic tables — Guests who aren’t eating or drinking taking up whole tables(see picture) — Guests who are sipping on waters to listen to a free live band — We had a party of 8 and we had no luck finding seating with the type of patrons this place Food: — The only good meat here is the pork belly because they fry it fresh once you order it — Spare ribs were soft and tender, but lacked flavor — Both the brisket and pulled pork was dried out and had to be drenched in BBQ sauce to even make it taste mediocre — Cole slaw side was refreshing and mashed potatoes were nice and thick Hygiene: — Our BBQ server dropped our bowl onto the floor and caught it as it rolled away. Then picked it up and served our pulled pork meat into it. I was shocked and the guest I was with who ordered was too nice to say anything about it I’m also confused what the hostess in the front is for since it’s all self seating

I love Astoria and I love this place. I’ve only been here once on Halloween, but I’ve thinking about it for the past few days and have been having withdrawals just thinking about the short but sweet times we’ve shared. This place(as someone previously described) is an actual booze barn. On Halloween, it was insanely packed and there was a live band– and I absolutely still loved it. The meats were all very good and the sides(Mac n cheese, corn bread, etc) were all solid as well. But the star of the show was the pork belly. My guy friend brought my partner and I here… and we just ate pounds and pounds of the pork belly, while swinging back beer and cocktails. The«moontail» that I actually remember was the Exotic Ginger. Tasty and strong– and everything I want alongside my meat. Come hereeeee! Yes, I must.

Came here for a friend’s birthday party. Great beer, great food and great music. Found myself back there again a week later. Beer selection is great. Lots of craft beers. The cocktail list is strong as well. Plus a few ciders, and no one was upset with the bar at all. They’ll even serve beer in growers so you don’t have to keep going to the bar. The food is very good. Maybe not the best bbq I’ve ever had but solid. Good selection. They ran out of Mac and cheese both times I was there but the mashed potatoes are good. The pulled pork is great. The corn bread is the size of a brick.

The smokehouse leaves you anything but stranded; the way it works is you tell the«butcher counter» how much of what meat(s) and side(s) you want and you pay per pound. You grab a craft brew or a jug for your crew, and make your way over to the benches and tables, to enjoy whatever live music and social situations are abound. Now, in review of the food and service… I didn’t have a single complaint, except when my beer ran out and they stood there talking to each other ignoring that they had customers. In retrospect I suppose the atmosphere trumps the quality of BBQ, however I’d eat there again without haste. I’m in Astoria, not the south, so although this place doesn’t live up to any spectacular smokehouse standards it meets my stomachs demands well, and the place is a real good time. All in all, the Bbq is good, the place is great, and I suggest you check it out!

I have a love/hate relationship with places that make my pants not fit. This is one of them. After a feast that I love, my pants don’t fit, and I hate it. Anyway, to sum this spot up in four words… BRING. ON. THE. MEAT! I had the roast chicken, kielbasa, cornbread, and mac and cheese. It was like one item was better than the next, you can’t go wrong! The chicken was so juicy, sausage with salty and meaty(obviously), you can taste the love in the massive brick of cornbread they serve you, and the mac… topped with panko… wow wow wow! I also loved the live band playing country music, it fit the vibe perfectly! My Sunday Funday was complete with the outdoor seating, good grub, some beer, and great music.

If you ever need space for a huge group, The Strand is where it’s at. Is there anything worse than going out for birthday drinks and trying to squeeze 12 people into a dark pub that fits the bartender and 6 friends? The Strand removes that factor. Add in their delicious bbq, and life is good. This is the sort of place I’ll selfishly recommend it to anyone that might have a big group party planned. It’s because *I* want to eat there. It’s because *I* want to drink there. Even if a friend doesn’t drink or eat bbq, I’ll argue they can have soda and some non-bbq options. You plan a party to make friends happy. This place makes me happy.

This place definitely meets it’s average rating. It’s not a bad spot, it’s actually pretty cool. Cafeteria style dining room and bar. You go up to the bar and meat counter separately to order and pay for food. Easy for big groups and less stress with paying the bill. I LOVE that about it. That makes things SO much easier with groups. But I have to say, the barbecue was just alright. The chicken was actually one of the best items on the menu which I’ve found to usually be the opposite on a lot of barbecue menus. Corn bread was another good side item. Mac and cheese was alright. The brisket was decent, I’ve had better. The pulled pork was bland and just nothing to brag about. Overall, most items were average but the environment and live music is pretty cool. Prices are decent though. So I still give it 3 stars but better barbecue would’ve bumped it up to at least 4, possibly 5. If this place had killer barbecue, maybe some type of brisket sandwich on the menu, and this type of cafeteria setup, it’d be 5 stars without a doubt.

Everything in the prior review stands, but I need to reiterate that the music was too loud. Does management not notice that nobody was sitting even near the vicinity of the live band that was playing? It certainly wasn’t only our group who thought that the music was too loud. This is the primary reason for my withdrawing one star. For dinner last night, I ordered the delicious brisket but dry pork shoulder. Tip: go with the brisket! :).

I was quite impressed with the spacious set up of the venue. From the chalkboard menu to the cafeteria-style line up to the trays, it gives off a vibe that it is a large school barbecue party! The venue is huge and capable of handling about a few hundreds of people. One wooden table and bench could fit about fifteen people comfortably. It starts off with the line with the cutter. The chalkboard menu is up top with different types of meats and price by pound except the chicken(which says ¼ of a pound). You can order only by half a pound or the full pound. Choices of Briskets, short ribs, chicken, pork belly, pulled pork, pork, shoulder, steak, and salmon. Pick as much as you want! There are choices of salads and sides such as Mac n’ Cheese, Pickles, Cole Slaw, Corn Bread, and etc. As things are running out, they cross it off the board. I had the Garden Salad and ¼ Chicken. Garden Salad was well dressed and tossed. It was a huge salad enough to share with lettuce, grape tomatoes, onions, and shredded carrots. I’m not sure what the dressing is but it’s light, refreshing, and had a sweet-sour taste to it. The chicken was nicely roasted with seasonings. I taste garlic, salt, and pepper. Chicken skin was crispy on the outside and the meat was so tender and soft on the inside. Both the salad and chicken complimented each other very well. Don’t forget the booze! Lots of beers and cocktails for you to choose from. Barrels of tap beer waiting for you to be poured! Brunch menu looks interesting here and I can’t wait to come back for that next time. On a side note: Live band was way too loud. I would sit away from them, either outside or just away…

Oh my. The food is so good here and I’ve only been here once! I got the pulled pork sandwich and it was so filling and so good, I ended up taking half of it home to eat for later. My boyfriend ended up getting brisket with a side of fried okra and OHMYGODTHATOKRASOGOOD. Ahahah I felt that it was my favorite dish and it was a side dish! I like that you can get a variety of BBQ here. You can get about ½ a pound of any kind of meat(ribs, brisket, pulled pork) with two sides or a sandwich/entrée plate. I took a peek at the french toast the table next to me got and it looked GOOOOD! Décor wise, it’s nice and open. Not too loud so you can have a pleasant brunch and there’s indoor and outdoor seating. Also there was live music when I was there which made it fun :) Waitstaff are super nice and attentive. They don’t hover over you constantly, but they’re there if you need them. Definitely coming back soon as I live nearby and I absolutely adore pulled pork.
