I have been going to get my hair cut from Aurora for years.
She always makes me look like a million bucks… well at least my hair… :)
Truly these women at Joe Kings Barber shop have their stuff together.
They are extremely fair priced, quick and friendly.

One of the only places in town we could find that offers a straight razor head shave. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Clean and fair priced.

The owner, Susan, reported to me that she had over 30 years’ experience in coloring hair, but that purported experience morphed into a hair color nightmare for me. I’m a blonde, but she first processed my hair to magenta then panicked and hurriedly slapped on 2 (TWO) more chemical treatments in the effort to mitigate the initial damage, without benefit of pre-​conditioning treatments, and without my approval or input. My hair ended up badly damaged with carrot orange roots and light blonde dried ends, over processed.
She was PROFUSELY apologetic during the time I was at her shop, but after I subsequently spent 3 hours at a professional salon undergoing fragile repair of my hair, including several deep conditioning treatments and a very short haircut, her apologetic demeanor ironically evaporated.
When I approached her and asked her to contribute to the cost of repairing the damage to my hair, which she was solely responsible for, she became openly hostile and told me that if I’d only waited 4 – 6 weeks, as she told me, the orange roots would oxidize and blend in. Seriously??? When I asked her if this was work she was proud of, she said I’d have to take her to court if I wanted reimbursement of my hair repair costs, which by the way were over $ 300.
I’ve never had such a haphazard job on my hair, followed by a total absence of integrity in acceptance of responsibility for a serious mistake.
Please save yourselves a similar experience, by avoiding this facility in general, and Susan, specifically.

I have tried numerous barber shops in Asheville and keep coming back to Susan. She straightens out what the other barbers messed up and does it for less. You cannot beat this place.

Great place. Took me as a walk in. I was out in 15 minutes with a fantastic cut by Susan for $ 15 plus tip. It’s a very laid back and unpretentious place. Will be back.

This is a great Barber shop at a very good price. I have had several cuts and never had any issues.

Not impressed at all! lack of technique and not at all what I asked for. They could have at least cut my side burns evenly or maybe even learn how to do a fade. I hate to bash on a small business but calling this place a barbershop is an insult to the trade.

Ladies this is as good as it gets. Susan is as good or better than any other woman stylist I’ve had. What a great first time experience!
My husband had been going to Joe King’s Barber Shop to get an inexpensive trim for months and recommended I try Susan too. She proved to be a very talented stylist. Susan had been cutting hair in downtown AVL for many years and decided to take a risk and take over this spot.
She does it all… mens, womens cuts, color, but more importantly, she’s really inexpensive. I got a new hair style for just $ 15. Plan to go back and get some color soon. I will NEVER pay $ 50. for a haircut in AVL again!

never have i ever had a better haircut than when brooke sculpted my head. the shop is in a weird spot, but is totally worth it. brooke also gave me a card with directions to get my hair cut again! she makes joe king awesome!

I had a great experience here. I’m in my late 20s but I wanted a somewhat old-​fashioned cut, a reverse bob. Susan, the owner, cut my hair and did a fantastic job. She was kind and fun and very professional. She told me she’s been cutting hair in Asheville for 34 years, and just purchased Joe’s old shop a couple of years ago. While I was in the shop all ages of women and men were in getting their hair done, and all seemed very happy with the cut they got. Susan cut my hair with a straight razor which was pretty cool. And a great price, especially for a woman’s hair cut!

This is now my go-​to place in AVL. It’s basically your typical cheap barber shop, but the thing that stood out was the service. Brooke did a great job and was super friendly and easy to talk to while she’s doing her thing. She even wrote down exactly what she used and how she cut my hair so that I could request to have it that way other places or get it that way when I come back. She also used some of her own homemade product in my hair. I’m not usually a product guy, but it looked pretty decent and I appreciated the extra personal gesture.
