Sad to find today that a familiar North Carolina landmark has closed. I had not the opportunity to visit the area here for several years, and learned of their closing in passing by. However, in reading some of the mote recent Unilocal reviews listed here, gastronomically maybe not such a terrible loss. Irregardless, we all have opinions and different tastes and flavors. As true wood-fired barbecue places diminish constantly in North Carolina, I’ll grieve the loss of this one. Miss at least the memory of the Blue Mist in better days. The days when every charter bus passing on school field trips to Raleigh or to the State Fair meant a near-mandatory stop at the Blue Mist. It’s a shame how things have to change so much sometimes. But, such is the way of life.

This long time BBQ joint(opened in 1948) is now permanently closed. While I’m not surprised, given the drop off in quality over the last few years, I’m still saddened. These places never, never get replaced with quality BBQ restaurants, run by families who grewup in the business. RIP

I stopped here a few years ago, and things were pretty good, but this time the BBQ was not worth buying. Tasteless, rubbery, fatty – nearly unpalatable. Won’t be stopping again.

Being from out of town, I have only eaten here 2 times. Once for lunch(BBQ sandwich) which I thought was terrible(had no flavor) and now for dinner with friends. The menu says the BBQ is cooked on an open pit fired with wood and is cooked for many hours. They have been in business for a long time so they must have something going for them. The menu is good and varied. The service was good as were the prices and quantity of food served. My friends are locals and were happy with what they ordered but none ordered BBQ. My BBQ was totally tasteless. It was like it had been boiled. We later figured out it must have spent those MANY hours cooking over wood WRAPPEDINFOIL. Why waste wood cooking meat wrapped so it cannot absorb the flavor from the wood. Last time there for me.

we had barbecue from the Randleman branch… bland barbecue, no smoky flavor. hush puppies are good. perhaps the Asheboro restaurant is better.

Blue Mist couldn’t be set in a better looking building if it tried. And the plastic chicken clock over the cash register that crows electronically on the hour kind of makes it feel like your crazy aunt Millie’s kitchen. The food was good. Maybe not the best BBQ I’ve had in North Carolina, but it more than passed muster. The staff was friendly and down-home and brought everything out quickly(without being«too quick»). I’d go back!

While driving through North Carolina, we spotted the Blue Mist Barbecue sign on the highway. After a little debating in the car, my companions and I agreed to take the exit and try it out. And try it out, we did. One of my fellow diners decided it would probably be a good idea to order not one, not two, not three, but four bbq sandwiches(he was hungry). It was a decision that would haunt us all. I was a bit more conservative with my ordering, which proved to be an excellent choice on my part. The reason Blue Mist is only receiving 1 star is because of the violent diarrhea that those 4 sandwiches ended up causing the poor soul who just wanted some good southern bbq, mere minutes after consuming them. Just be sure that if you are dining here, there is a restroom nearby(warning: the restroom at the gas station up the street is for customers only). If you’re looking for Blue Mist from the road, just look for the large pile of wood. Blue Mist is right behind it.

I have driven by Blue Mist and thought I need to stop there one of these days. Last night I was heading back to Charlotte, I stopped in, there was one other table in the restaurant. It was really bright with florescent lighting and they had the radio on in the dining room, but it didn’t cover the kitchen’s radio blaring. There were some waitresses, some working, some sitting. I found a bar stool right in front of the lemon pie in a dome. It looked like a movie set. The phone rings, the waitress, Misty looked at her co-worker and said, «Junior Dawkins?» Then she asked the customers, they said he was on the way, her reply, «tell ‘em, he ain’t got here yet.» I sat back and ate my bbq sandwich and drank my delicious sweet tea. I mean worthy of stopping every time I drive by. My sandwich was ok, it was not made with love. I could tell they were ready to go. But it sure beat going to a chain restaurant.

Cheap delicious vinegar based BBQ. The hush puppies were shaped like turds but so good! I liked the fried okra — however they weren’t in heavy batter, so you can still the okra which may not appeal to some people who want a popcorn shrimp kind of texture. Cons: No free refills, you pay per drink, I wish that was listed somewhere but I didn’t see it. Green beans were a bit sweet for our tastes.

Great bbq diner along 64 near Ashboro. I really enjoyed the bbq plate. A huge pile of bbq, about 7 hushpuppies, and a big helping of slaw. I give the slaw(very fine and tnagy) and hp(crispy outside, not greasy) each 5 stars. The bbq gets 4. Good sauce, but my pile was a little dry. I was here late on a Sunday afternoon, though so I may have been one of the last customers. Friendly staff, too. Stop in, you’ll be glad you did.
