This was my first visit to Doc’s. I keep trying to find a great eye doctor and have tried a few different places including Palermo and For Eyes in Arlington Heights. So rather than get contacts from the doctor, I decided to just get the exam done and mail order for the contacts. He greeted us nicely when my wife and I walked in and he gave us some paperwork to fill out since we’re first timers. A couple of days before the exam a women called to ask for our insurance information. I’m not sure what good she did because Dr. Sterczek said she was off for the afternoon and again asked for my insurance card even though I told him that I already gave his office that information. I waited for about 10 – 15 minutes while he was on the phone to confirm our insurance benefits. I think that showed a lack of organization in the office and we weren’t offered anything to make up for the inconvenience of waiting. He was a very nice person and he seems knowledgeable in his trade, but this is clearly a small shop that needs more organization. After I left, I realized that Dr. Sterczek had never given me my insurance card back. So I called and left a message for him stating that. I had a follow up in two weeks to make sure the contacts that he gave me were a good fit anyways, so I figured that I would pick them up then. The appointment was on a Monday at 11 am because that’s when they’re supposed to open, and Dr. Sterczek told me that he normally gets in at 10:30 am. So I arrived at 10:55 and waited till 11:15 before I decided to leave without anyone showing up. I tried to leave a message, but I was unable to. I tried contacting the office for the next two days after my scheduled appointment, but again, I was unable to leave a message or get anyone to answer the phone. Eventually, I was able to get a hold of Dr. Sterczek and he explained to me that he’s in between office managers and had a family emergency to attend to. As being apart of a small family business operation with a total of 3 full time employees, I can understand the difficulty of running a small business. I’m very sorry that he had a family emergency and I hope that it wasn’t too serious. He has since compensated me for my time and inconvenience so he was able to make this situation better for me.

I was always taught if you don’t have nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything at all. (Silence) I will say this… AVOID! Poor treatment of patients and just an overall poor experience. Would not recommend.

(Re: Dr. Gary Sterczek of Doc’s, now on Rand Rd in Arlington Hts) Will post my complete review AFTER we get things straightened out – if we ever do. Later: Funny how sweet they were to me until a problem arose. I waited and waited for the phone call to say they had come in. Two weeks went by.(No «glasses in one hour» here.) I did finally get my glasses, after calling to ask if they had come in or not. The receptionist was very huffy with me for calling and asking why my order wasn’t in it. And then, lo and behold! My lenses came the very next day! Since the frames were mine and I didn’t buy theirs, she didn’t even check to make sure they sat correctly on my face. My appointment was the first of the day – and the doctor wasn’t in yet. The receptionist had to call his cell to find him and get him over to the office. I should have known this was a place with poor customer service when a customer came in with a complaint about her lenses and after she left, the receptionist rolled her eyes at me, as if to say, boy some customers sure are a pain. Glad I don’t have to go back.
