High above the city of Los Angeles, tucked away in a copse of evergreen trees, lies a little piece of heaven, an oasis of native plants that somehow escaped the ravages of the Station Fire. The Chilao Visitor Center, built right in the center of this island of green, reminds you of the diversity and beauty that mark Angeles National Forest. Part of the newly minted San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, the Chilao area also offers camping, day hikes, and great photo opportunities. The center itself is small but beautifully designed and offers several displays about the wildlife and history of the area. Several short trails surround it which are well-marked and well-maintained. There’s no gift shop to speak of, so make sure you bring your own water and snacks. There are restrooms available in the day hike area. The drive up the 2 to Chilao is stunning. Look out for lots of Porsches(I counted 8 this morning!) and motorcyclists taking their babies out for a spin. Always call first to make sure the center is open and that road conditions are good. Driving on the Crest is free. But if you want to park and take a hike, you will need an Adventure Pass($ 5) except on Free Pass days… like today!(And every Veterans’ Day Weekend; more here And don’t forget to take a deep breath. Clean, pine-scented air. Priceless.
