Lost Dutchman Campground

This is the nicest, cleanest, most friendliest-​staffed state park I’ve been to yet. While it mostly caters to and has RV spots with and without hookups, the «Overflow» camping spots without hookups are closest to the Superstition Mountains themselves! Potable water is available, and multiple trash/​recycling cans, but no bathrooms close enough in the overflow section.
There are two bathrooms in the reserved camping areas; both with showers and outside utility sinks. HOT RUNNING WATER for both! One bathroom has showers accessible inside, but it’s pretty cold in there (it’s Dec. in AZ, so warm enough during the day, but cold at night). My wet face and hair were ice cold as the rest of me was under the running water… had to keep turning in circles and re-​wetting my hair to stop from shivering. The other bathroom (near the group campground) has shower rooms out back that are accessible from the outside… I.e., shower w bench only, no sink, no mirror, no toilet. It’s small enough that water splashes just about everywhere on the floor, so it takes some talent to put your pants on while keeping them dry. But, it’s also easy to warm up the space w the steam from the shower, so it’s comfortable. Best part about these shower rooms is that they face south and the sun is gloriously warming.
There are multiple, multiple camp hosts here, the majority whom are retired RV folks that are extremely friendly, helpful, and HAPPY to be here. Campsites are IMMACULATE! Tables are wiped down, fire pits cleaned out, lovely orange AZ pea gravel is raked and leveled. It’s like having the beds made in a hotel. Trashes are emptied every day.
The wood they sell here tends to be wet, as in not «seasoned» and dry. It’s a struggle just to keep the logs burning. LOTS of smoke. BUT there are 3 or 4 well-​lit-​at-​night-​camp host sites that have it available and the Ranger office has ICE!
The cities of Apache Junction and Mesa are not too far away and easily accessible for groceries, laundry facilities and camping supplies. Ice is $ 1 cheaper in town than at the Ranger station.
I liked it so much here that my initial 5-​day stay has turned into two weeks. At $ 15/​day, it’s not too bad at all. :$

One of the best things you can do around Mesa, awesome hike to the top of the platue! Highly recommend visiting this state park!

Wonderful staff, beautiful campground. This is located right at the base of the Superstition Mountains. They offer trail maps, night talks on the constellation, showers, outdoor sinks for dishes and your choice of electrical hook ups or not. Wonderful spot.

Etwa 40 Meilen östlich von Phoenix liegt der Ort Apache Junction am Lost Dutchman State Park (SP). Hier am Rande des SP liegt der Campground vor einer gewaltigen Bergkulisse. Reste eines Vulkans, der vor Millionen Jahren zum letzten Mal eruptierte. Ausgangspunkt für diverse Wanderungen auf gut gekennzeichneten Trails.
Von den 70 Stellplätzen haben 55 Strom– und Wasseranschluss. Alle haben einen eigenen Grillplatz und sind großzügig bemessen, d.h. guter Abstand zum Nachbarn. Die Toiletten– und Duschräume (Restrooms/​Showers) sind sehr gepflegt, wenn auch das Alter nicht ganz zu übersehen ist.
Das Grandiose aber ist die Lage: zur einen Seite die hoch hinauf strebenden Reste des ehemaligen Vulkans (Superstition Mountains) — von den Millionen Jahren der Erosion bizarr geformt — zur anderen Seite das unendliche Panorama einer noch unendlicheren Ebene, an deren fernem Ende Bergketten mehr zu erahnen, denn zu sehen sind und am Horizont die Silhouette von Downtown Phoenix. Abends bei Dunkelheit ein fernes Lichtermeer und Abend für Abend spektakuläre Sonnenuntergänge.
Der Campground ist Ausgangspunkt mehrerer Wandermöglichkeiten (Trailheads), von denen der Siphon Draw Trail besonders zu empfehlen ist. Er ist anspruchsvoll, gutes Schuhwerk und Trittsicherheit sind Voraussetzung, aber dann eröffnet er einem großartige Aussichten und Panoramen, die die Anstrengung lohnen. Zum Gipfel (The Flatiron, 4.861 ft hoch — 1 Fuß = 30,6 cm) haben wir es nicht ganz geschafft, aber schon die ²⁄₃ Wegstrecke war atemberaubend — im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes.
Fazit: Wer es sich zeitlich leisten kann, sollte mindestens zwei Nächte hier verbringen — und genießen. $ 25 kostet der Stellplatz/​Nacht, gut investiertes Geld. Man bekommt dafür 5 Unilocal-​Sterne und eine ewige Erinnerung.
