See my pictures! Got the bratwurst plate with 1 brat, sauerkraut, and German potato salad. So yummy(as always). This is the best place to get German food in the OC. It’s Hoppin here on a Friday night, especially when there is a ducks game. Dianna always serves us. She is so great! If you have a question about the menu she will be able to answer it no problem. She knows every item and ever beer. Great service from her! I heard they are doing thanksgiving dinner here for $ 32– might have to check this out. FYI– the black Forrest cake is baked on Thursdays!

With a nice offering of authentic German pub fare, Bierstube is the restaurant connected to the Phoenix Club. I had the opportunity to try them out for lunch during a short trip to Anaheim. I started with the Hungarian Goulash. It was delicious — a wonderful hearty broth with nice chunks of meat and vegetables. I got a small order, but would have been happy with a large order as my meal. It was that good. For my meal, I went with the weinerschnitzel –not a great choice. It was HUGE, but once I cut into it, I quickly realized that it was just a modest portion of pork, pounded or sliced to be paper thin before it was breaded and deep fried. Seriously, there was more breading than meat there. I couldn’t even taste the pork. It was served with a nice German potato salad and spaetzle. All in all, I left stuffed but not particularly satisfied.

We were in the area and stumbled on this place. The food was great! We will definitely return. The service was good despite the fact that we came in during the lunch time rush.

2 years later and like a fine scotch it’s gotten better. We enjoyed a delicious dinner that started off with a piping hot fresh pretzel and a heffeweissen beer. From there our tour de cuisine continued with a brat plate and a jäger laden(?) which was a perfectly cooked and tender pork chop topped with a mushroom gravy just overflowing with mushrooms and served with spaetzel and and roasted buttered vegetables. Michael was our waiter this time and was extremely friendly and attentive. Can’t wait until we are in Anaheim again to eat here.

Great beer at this joint. Classic German food and beer which will make your belly happy. The location isnt too far off the freeway(57) and is behind some car dealers. Once you’re in, its like a time warp to old school Anaheim and its deep German roots. Enjoy

Was I dreaming? How did I end up here? I wanted to take the family to try something different for dinner. We got more than we bargained for. After getting there, I thought we were Germany! Everyone was singing in German. They were all speaking in German. A man was playing an accordion. A Fräulein was making the rounds and singing to all the men there. She even came around to our table and sang to me while putting her hands on my shoulder. I swore to my wife and daughter that I had no idea who this woman was. Everyone was drinking beer and singing. The place was crowded with what appeared to be seniors on a Sunday evening. Everyone was dressed in German garb. Yeah, we felt out of place being the only Asians there. Not a table was vacant. A person who spoke English told us to just join a table. They assured us that even though everyone spoke German, that they were friendly. Luckily(or unluckily) for us, a group left, and we had a table all to ourselves. My wife ordered the Veal Loaf. I had a sausage fest and ordered their bratwurst and Polish Sausage. The daughter had their deep fried mac n cheese. The veal loaf was more like fried spam to my wife. She didn’t like it. The sausages came with a side of sauerkraut. The sausages were good. But, I am not a fan of sauerkraut. They brought me red cabbage instead. I didn’t like that either. The daughter did not like her fried mac n cheese. It was an experience coming here. It was like being in Germany without ever getting into an airplane. If you want to experience something totally different, come here on a Friday or a Sunday when the seniors are partying. They know how to party here. The food? You can’t go wrong with having a sausage fest here. I hear the beer is good too!

Authentic German food that you cannot beat! I love how filling it is. And their beers?! Yuuuum. The steak tartar(raw meat w/egg) was a lot more interesting than I expected. It had a little bit of a sour taste to it. I love it regardless. The goulash is excellent and you can’t go wrong with the Jagerschnitzel. I am drooling thinking about it now. Service was very nice and attentive. We went on a weekday and it was not busy at all. It has such a nice, homey feel to the restaurant. I will be back!

This is the closest place to a real german pub in the OC. Lots of beers on tap but more importantly, is the food. Here you’ll find hearty foods that you’ll find in germany(pork knuckle is only available during oktoberfest) with a side of beets and applesauce. All in all, come try it out because this place may surprise you. Tip: Best time to come here is when one of the soccer matches are on.

This review is for those looking for an authentic German meal(as good as Oma cooked). The Bierstube is a German pub with an atmosphere as close as you can get in the OC to a pub or Gaststätte in Germany. These are the best of the menu which is full of many good dishes(something for everyone). Best German Appetizers: The Currywurst — Sliced bratwurst with homemade curry ketchup and fries. This is authentic street and pub grub, just like in Berlin. The Warm Bavarian Pretzel — Hand-made oven baked pretzel topped with sea salt. Ask for the dip or try the substantial pretzel with a little butter. So good! The Steak Tartar — For the adventurous or «Kenner», this is the freshest ground raw beef sirloin. Mix in the raw egg and onions, add salt and paper and top with more onions, capers, and or anchovies. Enjoy it on a slice of bread. You will only find dish this in a true German restaurant. And yes it tasted delicious. Best Soup: Hungarian Goulash Soup — Served with bread on the side, spicy good and loaded with meat. Best German Pub Food: German Brotzeit — Grab a glass of beer and this for a true Bavarian meal. German cold cuts with Cambazola, Brie and Port wine cheese, crisp garden radishes, served with German rye bread. Gebratener Leberkaese mit Roestzwiebeln — Grilled veal loaf with fried onions served with fried potatoes — Eat this here or pay airfare to Munich. Rich and tasty. The Phoenix Classic — Take your pick. Every sausage served is delicious from mild to spicy, served with homemade potato salad and sauerkraut, not from a jar! Best German Dishes: Sauerbraten — Marinated Sirloin Roast — The roast is served with a homemade ginger snap gravy(savory sweet and exactly as you’d find in Germany) the homemade spaetzle and red cabbage are the perfect sides. They pan browned the spaetzle in butter just like my German mom does it at home. My daughter orders as side of the spaetzle every time we eat here. Schweineschnitzel — Breaded pork cutlet — served with fries and a lemon wedge as it should be. Big and tender and with a light crisp breading. Yum! Best Desserts: BLACKFORESTCAKE — chocolate layered cake with cherry filling, cherry liqueur, topped with whipped cream and shaved chocolate — Authentic with Kirsch and no canned cherry filling. OREGONBERRYRUMTOPF(RUMPOT) Rum-soaked berry sauce served over vanilla ice cream. Juicy and sweet and tastes like a special occasion. BIENENSTICHCAKE — Ask the server if they have any Bee sting cake. It is amazing — filled with over an inch of light custard cream and coated with almond praline.

Underwhelming is the only word that comes to mind. Unbreaded JagerSchnitzel? Fried spaetzle? Red cabbage with no tartness? Sorry, but the entire meal was bland and very disappointing. I can’t believe they have a Unilocal rating of 4 stars.

Anaheim is a German mecca. There are many German establishments in this area that attract the Motherland’s old timers. You can expect to find plenty of good beer and boisterous Bavarians here. The restaurant is located immediately as you enter the Phoenix Club, a longstanding venue for large events in its own right. I was surprised to find such a limited menu, a lot of American food, and more of a bar instead. [Head smack] Bierstube, meaning beer room or tavern, stupid me. The waiter advised that the Jaegerschnitzel was a good choice, a pounded pork loin, breaded and fried like a typical schnitzel, but covered with a heavy mushroom gravy. Unfortunately, I did not find it as good as imagined. Mr. B’s order was for Rinderrouladen(a beef roll stuffed with pickle and bacon, covered with a brown gravy). The beef was pretty dry, way over cooked. The gravy helped but was nothing memorable. The sides we chose included potato pancakes, spaetzle, and red cabbage. None of these panned out either. The potato pancakes reminded me of McDonald’s hash browns, the spaetzle were similar to mac n cheese and grossly greasy, the red cabbage was seasoned oddly and preserved in some kind of unnaturally thickened juices. Easy to push away untouched. I did not care for their flavors, any of it. The cooked red cabbage I have learned to love has much brighter flavors thanks to vinegar, sugar and intense spices like juniper berries and cloves. We carried home a slice of German chocolate cake that was ok but not that great. Just so you know, it was not a complete loss. Their complimentary bread basket featured a beautiful multigrain and raisin bread. I detected a light dusting of caraway seeds in the dough. One can buy a round loaf for around $ 5 – 6, I forget the exact price. And I would get it. Make sure you save the crumbs in case you need them later to find your way home from another adventure. The Hungarian Goulash was offered as one of their soups. It is much thicker than a soup, more like a stew, but generous with large chunks of beef, some potato and carrots, and slightly spicy with a hot paprika. I would gladly return for a cup/bowl of this for $ 5-$ 6 and some crusts of that bread and butter. And finally the beer, Koestritzer, a tall glass of dark draft that was recommended by the waiter. Mr. B did enjoy this. I would not go out of my way to return, but the goulash and bread still have me thinking about them.

ive been craving german food for the longest time and i’m glad the bierstube could help satisfy the craving. when i first arrived at this location, it looked like the outside of a church or an ymca building… i did not expect to find a restaurant here. apparently its located inside the phoenix club, which google states is a «Lively dance hall»…lol anyways, onto the food! we got the Jägerschnitzel and the phoenix special and a grapefruit hef. THEPHOENIXCLASSIC Your choice of a bratwurst, smoked bratwurst, knackwurst, polish sausage, spicy polish sausage, or 2 wieners served with potato salad and sauerkraut 12.50 (we got the smoked bratwurst and the spicy polish sausage… both excellent choices, and both filling. it also came with german potato salad… if you have not had german potato salad… try it! its made with vinegar, and it has a tang to it.) sadly, it didn’t come with sauerkraut. :( JAEGERSCHNITZEL — HUNTER’S PORKCUTLET This traditional hunter’s dish is a pork cutlet topped with wild mushroom sauce Served with farm fresh vegetables and homemade spaetzle 17.95 this dish was extremely delicious. i love how they provided spaetzle, so you can use it to soak up the juices and eat it. i think this was the first time having spaetzle, but it will certainly not be my last. the pork was juicy and the sauce perfected it. the grapefruit hef i got was very interesting. i felt like i was drinking juice not beer. extremely fruity, but its a refreshing drink. i recommend this place, and i’ll be back to drink, watch games and eat a pretzel. oh, the night we went, they had a live person playing music and old people got up and started to dance. very interesting. haha. if you eat here, you can use the parking and walk to the honda center and save on parking at the center.

After a Unilocal event at the city grove in Anaheim I decided to scope out some good eats nearby. I figured my trusty Unilocal app wouldn’t steer me wrong so I commenced with my search. Bierstube popped up first in line with 4 solid stars to boot. I haven’t partaken in German cuisine in awhile and with happy hour in full swing at the time, I figured«why the heck not?» FYI Happy Hour runs from Tues-Thurs 3−7pm and Fri-Sat 4−6pm. Located off the main road in a unassuming lot off car dealership row, this modest yet charming little pub offered up some warm and friendly service coupled with some hearty home style German cooking that was quite enjoyable. I started the meal with a frosty glass of German draft beer, namely the bitburger. It was crisp light with a great taste to it and and went down the hatch nicely. Ordered the curry sausage from the HH menu and it was terrific! This well seasoned knockwurst was plump, juicy and loaded with flavor. It was slathered with a rich and fragrant curry tomato sauce that took the flavor profiles up a couple more notches! The sausages were paired with some crispy potato pancakes and apple sauce. These pancakes were a perfect companion to the sausages by adding a great crunch and textural contrast to this tasty dish. I enjoyed the goulash next and it was superb! Rich permeating flavor with tender chunks of braised beef and potatoes in a rustic and flavorful tomato sauce. It definitely had a homespun feel to it that tasted scratch made. Next up was the steak tartar. This one was definitely a miss in my book. The steak quality was not good. It had a mushy mouthfeel a gamy flavor and dare I say bloody taste to it. Not good at all. I could hardly finish it even after dousing the mound of meat with Tabasco and pepper! My favorite tartar is still the one I enjoyed at Angelina in Paris. Until then, my search for a comparable steak tartar continues… Schweineschnitzel served with spätzle and veggies was quite tasty. The pork Schweineschnitzel was reminiscent of a chicken fried steak topped with a mushroom sauce that added a creamy and earthy element to the dish. Delicious. The spätzle reminded me of delicate fluffy bits of eggy pasta. Interesting textures with a buttery light & subtle flavor. The coupling of the seasoned vegetables was just right and made this hearty dish quite satisfying. Overall, a had a pleasant first experience here and I’d gladly return to nosh on more of their favorites if I’m ever in the area. Happy Eats!

We stopped in here for dinner last night. Our waitress was Robin. She was great I can’t remember what we ordered as I can’t pronounce it but we both enjoyed our dinners. The place was nice and clean. We both sampled some German beers. That was fun. Much better than Coors Light. Id definitely visit this place again!

Fun atmosphere. Decent beer selection, we had one of those taster flights for $ 8… the waitress was so busy we ended up with a few of the wrong items… Oh well… Ordered a Ruben and it was AWESOME! The meal came with the smallest side of fries and again our waitress was so busy she got the ranch dressing to us after the fries had been eaten. They need more wait staff.

This is a good German bar/restaurant with a nice range of good German beers on tap(many rare to find on tap or even at a bar/eatery in California), a few US beers, and good, solid German food. The food is by no means outstanding or an example of the best of real German/central European food and it’s a bit Americanized, but overall it is all very good and enjoyable, a tasty meal option with plenty of different choices all good. Overall, the food alone is more in the 3– 31⁄2 srar range but the other elements, such as the beer, push it up into a 4 for me. The braised brisket in grone sosse was very nice, the meat cooked slow and made tender and flavourful. The grone sosse(lightly creamy herb sauce) was good but my main complaint was that it needed more of it. The spatzle, a favourite accompaniment of mine when eating German food, was very nice with good texture and toasty flavour. The currywurst was quite good. The goulash was quite Americanized and only roughly a real goulash, but it was tasty and enjoyable with nice light spiciness. Side of veg was cooked nicely, not overdone. The knodel were enjoyable enough but not great. Beer includes very good German pilsners and schwarzber plus some more basic ones. Some are very difficult if not impossible to find on tap in California(like Kostritzer Schwarzbier or Warsteiner Oktoberfest). The place is a fairly simple, but pleasant, eatery and bar but with nice German elements. It’s also neat that it’s in a German social club building. Although it’s unusual to find a German club and restaurant in California(as opposed to, say, Pittsburgh, Pa. or Milwaukee), it makes sense here since Anaheim was originally settled by Germans(hence the name, a combination of «heim» and Santa Ana for the river flowing through the county). This is now a go-to place for us when in Anaheim and seeking to avoid or get a break from the Disney or other touristy stuff.

FRIENDLYANDNICE. I came here on a whim with my friend since we wanted to try something different. At first I got confused about where I was going, but then I saw the big Phoenix Club sign and figured it out. Upon entering, it was a bunch of elderly people. very classy ladies at one table and gentlemen at another. I felt kind of out of place, but the server quickly turned that around. She sat us, got us menus, and gave us plenty of time to browse through the menu. My friend and I ended up ordering two dark beers, one reminding me slightly of guiness, but not. We also ordered the deutsche wurst platte to share. We chose: –Smoked brat: very yummy, could really taste the meat, not all fillers like some. –Polish sausage: good as well. –Sauerkraut: nice and tangy! –also order side of potato pancakes. My friend didn’t really get the dipping it in applesauce thing. but I liked the sweet and saltiness of the combo. Overall the food wasn’t that to die for thing I was going for, but it was pretty good. The ambiance itself was fun and I definitely would come back for some more beers!

RAW, MEATY and EGG! Steak Tartar for breakfast/lunch(they open at 11:00 am). Hi, I am Nick H. I have not had steak tartar since I was a kid. Unilocalers tend to get caught up in unique dishes of various Asian cultures. Guess what, Europeans have a few also. Steak Tartar is raw beef. It is high quality raw sirloin to be exact. You eat it with a raw egg and a few other ingredients. It is not only eaten in Europe, but also in Russia. I can tell you it is something truley delightful if done right. The last time I ate at the Phoenix Club it was terrible(about 10 years ago). I found out today they have a new chef. While the dish I had was not five stars, it was a solid four stars. Match this with a five star ambiance, extremely clean and unique restaurant and five star customer service, I had a five star meal. The little one ate off the kids menu and enjoyed two miniature burgers and fresh fruit. She thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. I am surprised that the main German spot in LA/OC area has only 32 reviews. This is definitely something any Unilocaler should add to their foodie experience. Suggestion about the Steak Tartar: They serve it here in a unique way. Every ingredient, including the raw egg, is kept apart. You are to mix all ingredients, spread some butter on rye bread or a roll(I suggest rye bread) and then spread on the steak tartar you just mixed. Have this with a beer or nice wine. Top your meal off with one of their homemade desserts. Homemade Desserts-4 Stars! When I was a kid, there were plenty of German eateries includng bakeries. The most famous was on Pioneer in Artesia. They are long gone, but I had a very delicious Schwartwald(Black Forest) cake they make on sight. I enjoyed this with a delicious hot cup of coffee. Just like old times! Bierstube in Anaheim… another reason the OC is the best place to live.
