A place in history. Tubac Presidio is the first American settlement in AZ. It was occupied by the Hohokam in 300BC. Then the Tohono O’odham Indians(400BC). The Spanish arrived around 1645 and established this Presidio then know as San Ignacio de Tubac. Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821 bringing Tubac under the Mexican flag. In 1843 Tubac became part of the United States with the Gasden Purchase All these cultures are blended together as represented here at the Presidio. An interesting community filled with history. You’ve got to check it out when in the area Today was a celebration of the Day of the Dead”. A celebration of life where personal altar are created with items that represented the life of the deceased. It is a Mexican custom A custom, I think, that is shared with other Latin American countries It is not a day of mourning, but a day of celebration

Huge. There is so much to see here. You can easily spend an hour or 2 walking around and reading the displays. One of the earliest settlements for AZ. They have only dug up a small area and found lots and lots of artifacts. Nice staff will help you out as you look around. A nice addition to shopping and eating in Tubac.

What a great introduction to what was one of the first European Settlements in Arizona. This State park does an awesome job of preserving the historical significance of the town, and presents the information in a splendid self-guided tour. It’s not a particularly long tour, but its presentation is very well done. The Historical Society should be commended for doing an amazing job of this. Well worth seeing while you are in Tubac!

The First Arizona State Park, comprised of the oldest permanent European settlement in Arizona, a variety of interesting architecture and buildings, an underground museum and associated fascinating artifacts. Very interesting use of a few minutes when in Tubac, very well run. Because of budget cuts, it has been running on restricted hours. And now, as a part of the state budget cuts it may be closed forever. We get the government and the services we deserve. Oh Well.
