This is not your grandma’s library! Or even the library from when you were a kid. I live on the east side of Algonquin and visit the Eastgate branch at least once a week. All of the librarians are very friendly and helpful and know me(and my daughter) by name because of our propensity to put items on hold. In fact, I often get new release DVDs from the library way before my friends with Netflix can rent them. Same thing with new release CDs and books – I put them on hold at the web site and as soon as they become available I get an e-mail from the library telling me my items are waiting for me. Nice! The branch has also obtained library items for me from other libraries and even ordered an item for the library’s collection once based on my suggestion. I also love the the AAPLD is part of the North Suburban Digital Consortium. Because of this, AAPLD card holders can«rent» Kindle books and downloadable audio books for free. This also saves me a ton of money(and keeps me sane on my 25 mile each way commute to and from work!) So, yeah, I’m a flag waving fan of the Algonquin Area Public LIbrary District, and you should be, too!

Where else can you read books for nearly free? This is like the coolest thing on the planet. So, you come here. Select and new or like new book. You get to «take» it home. You get to read it and then when you are done… simply bring it back. No questions asked. No warrants, no guilt, no shame. I love this concept!!! Seriously, bring the books back.

I have had a library card with the Algonquin Library since around 1975 or so. I remember when the library was above the police station and the children’s section was above the jail cells. The floors would creek and I always thought I would fall through the floor and end up in a cell… and my parents would never find me. But, I digress… Fast forward many many years — I still have my original library card made out of yellowish cardstock with a metal bar with my library card number. I can’t use it anymore and why would I want to? Both branches of the AAPLD are awesome… clean, quiet, organized… we visit the Eastgate Branch because it is closer to home and farther away from the traffic of Randall Road.
