Gracie Barra West Side Brazililan Jiu Jitsu is fantastic. My son has been a member of this gym for two years. When he started at Gracie Barra, he had two years of Kenpo Karate under his belt. His yellow belt. Kenpo was fine but lacked the interaction my son needed to stay interested, he eventually complained about going to Kenpo all the time. To be honest, watching him perform Kenpo was also tedious as a parent. The kids stand there, memorizing form. Not a lot of fun for a three year-old. Enter Gracie Barra. From the first class, my son couldn’t stop talking about submissions. Mom, did you know that the Americana is my favorite submission? Mom, can I practice my Arm Bars on you? Mom, is today Jiu-Jitsu? Mom, where is my Gi? Mom, do I need a mouth guard? In the beginning, he was always the little guy getting whaled on. He was always the one being submitted. He has always liked cats, so it is no surprise that while he was being submitted, he was also meowing… KIDS:) He no longer is the little guy, and he can hold his own on the mats. And he only meows occasionally. That was kind of embarrassing. The conversation would ensue, «Which kids is yours?» Me, «The little guy, who is pinned, and meowing. Who is yours?» Them, «The kid submitting yours.» Whatever:D The point is, after two years my son still enjoys it. The employees at Gracie Barra West Side are all great, they are true role models for the young kids who attend. The facility is clean and safe. There is plenty of seating to stay and watch practices. The teachings at this school go beyond the mats, that is for sure. My son has developed the calm exterior of a deadly killer in training. One who occasionally meows. Meow.
