Stopped here on a road trip and loved it! There was one small table inside and some picnic tables outside. We got the bbq pork sandwich, Mac salad, coleslaw and potato salad. The sandwiches are huge! There was half a pound of meat on it. I recommended getting the hot sauces. It’s a bbq sauce and is amazing! The coleslaw is different than your typical coleslaw. I don’t normally like coleslaw but I really liked it here. The Mac salad is also not likely your typical macaroni salad. It was on the dryer side and wasn’t sweet, more of a black pepper taste but very good. It also had tomatoes in it. Lastly the potato salad was very very good. It didn’t have that typical dill or too sweet taste. No celery and no egg either. I was a big fan. They had to roll me out when I finished because it was so good and the portions are big. I wish I lived closer.

Yum. Freshly smoked, coleslaw on top, splash of sauce. No décor. Picnic tables road side. Great service.

We love Paulies, great service and great food. So much better than the other local bbq places(I won’t post any names). The only reason I’m giving them 4 stars is because you never know when they’re open! I keep making the mistake of showing up without calling ahead and a couple of times they’ve been closed during their(supposed to be) normal business hours. If they could keep consistent hours they’d definitely receive 5 stars. There’s no indoor seating but you get a beautiful view of the blue ridge mountains outside, the owner is very friendly, and the food is great. Just make sure to call ahead before you visit!

Pretty good ‘que, but getting over priced. We’ve stopped using Pualie for catered events because he has priced himself out of market.

I wanted to review Paulie’s to give it the props it deserves. I may regret doing so because I’d love to keep the place all to myself. Forever and always. I’ve been twice, once in the summer of 2014 and most recently on 6÷13÷2015. Both times the ribs, pulled pork sandwich, and sides(all of them) were fantastic. I mean FANTASTIC in the I-will-never-forget-this-joint kind of way. BBQ doesn’t need extra sauce(though they give you some); it’s the kind that falls off the bone and into your mouth. And the sides stand up all on their own. I’m a big fan of the slaw and potato salad. Paulie is great, staff is great, and I plan to return every chance I get(if my waistline will allow it). I should also mention that on my most recent stop two friends from DC accompanied me; I had been talking up Paulie’s all day; and upon tasting the grub they said, «Paulie’s lived up to the hype.» And believe me, I had hyped it big time. 5 stars on the food, but one demerit only for the lack of seating and space. But honestly, I’d stand on my head to eat this stuff.

Oh my… that was unexpected… and delicious. Sometimes it’s the places you stumble upon that make it great; this was all about the food! We stopped in before noon on a Saturday, ordered two platters to go, and headed to the wineries. Hindsight being 20/20, I might have just made a trip for the BBQ! Delicious homemade sides as well; don’t forget those! I’ll be stopping on my way through 151 again… and again… and again.

I drove by the smoker at the old gas station for several years before FINALLY remembering to stop before flying by on 151. And I stop by every time since! Coming from the south(Wintergreen, Nellysford) it is on the right side just after passing the school on the left. And do stop! Little hole in the wall serves the most delicious, smoky tender BBQ, pulled pork, chicken with wonderful sides(cole slaw my fav). The sandwiches are generous, so you might ask for extra sauce. If I am headed north, I get a pound of pulled pork and slaw, they throw in the rolls and by the time I get home, I’m dying due to the smell all the way home. A pound is enough for 4 – 6 rolls, depending. The folks there are great and offer generous samples and often freebies. And appreciate the classic cars out front! Just pull in, after all, you’re in the country. Since you will eat either on a nearby picnic table or in your car(or home), make sure to take lots of napkins!

Paulie’s you would never guess by looking at it from the outside that they honestly have the best pulled pork that my husband and I have ever tried. My husband got the mac n cheese as a side he gave me a bite I’m not usually a fan but this mac n cheese was really good I asked for another bite :) I got the beans they were excellent too. Great service too! We sat outside on the picnic tables was a beautiful day watched the cars go by and you could hear cows in the background pretty entertaining. AMAZING!!!

We were really surprised by the good reviews of this place. The person who described the meat as having a «burnt plastic» flavor is right on the money… the pulled pork tasted like gasoline. Sides(mac and cheese and cole slaw) were not offensive, but also nothing to write home about.

Visited Paulie’s on a cold December night and ate at the picnic tables out front. When the staff saw we were eating in the cold, dark night they brought out candles for our table and a comp side or two. And a piece of outside brown(bark) for me when they heard I was a ‘que aficianado. Service was super friendly, but the ribs were the real star. Mac and cheese was boiling hot and burned the roof of my mouth, but it was totally worth it. Wish I lived closer so I could try more of the menu!

Many believe that the more dive a barbecue place is, the better it is. i don’t know if that’s true, while Paulie’s isn’t much to look at, it’s certainly good to eat at. In what used to be an old gas station, Paulie’s serves up barbecue basics like pulled pork and half chickens with sides like baked beans and cole slaw. Much of the business is take out and there’s nowhere to eat inside, but there are two picnic tables outside in the parking lot. The portions are generous as you get a lot of food for your money… no one will go away hungry. I insisted on coming here on a winery trip and my wife and in-laws were wary from its looks, but once we were done eating we were all true believers.

I have only tried the pulled pork BBQ sammy here. The reason is, it’s so good that my pants have flown out the window every time I have eaten one, and I can’t afford to lose anymore clothes. This place is everything you want in a BBQ joint, but it doesn’t matter because it’s right by the road and the smell coming out of the smokers makes it impossible not to stop in, anyways. I love Paulie’s Pig Out. Tell them Chad Dukes sent you. It won’t help you, but I want them to KNOW I sent you.

Food and service were spectacular. Got the BBQ sandwich and ½ chicken dinner with baked beans and mac & cheese. My friend and I were so stuffed that we ate the leftovers for dinner. Each item was incredible — cheesy mac & cheese, rich baked beans, and the hot sauce was out of control. Easily the best I’ve ever had. Seriously. I would give this place 5 stars if they had a green vegetable on the menu(yes, I judge that). Otherwise this was the perfect dining experience.

Stopped here on our way back from Nelson. Two big smokers sitting out front smoking ribs. SO and I both had pork bbq sandwich platters with baked beans and potato salad. Food was plentiful and good. Baked beans were some of the best I have ever had. Potato salad was fresh and very ‘homey’ tasting. BBQ was good. It comes already mixed with sauce but you can add spicy sauce if you want.

Well… I live near Lexington NC the BBQ capitol of the south they say. Paulies is by far better in my opinion than any of the BBQ down here. I travel through Virginia quite often and have made this a regular stop. The BBQ pork is totally the best I have had and Paul’s chicken salad is beyond compare, great smokey taste and lots of chicken and not loaded with mayo. Then there are the ribs, really great flavor, I am heating a rack of them on my grill as I write this. If you travel through the Afton Va. area 6 miles west of RT.29 on VA151you really need to try Paulies, Very simple and totally great food. You will not be disappointed!

Epic Food! Was doing the BrewRidge weekend and had just finished an icy windy hike on Humpback Rocks and stopped at Paulie’s for lunch. I ordered the half rack of ribs and a side of potato salad. I got the half rack(i’m usually a full rack kinda guy) which was enough for me. Delicious dry rub, good bbq sauce, and fall off the bone goodness. The potato salad was very, very good, but the macaroni and cheese was heavenly! A good mix of gooeyness and crispy pieces from the top. Tried the pulled sandwich, which was good and the bbq chicken which was also tender and flavorful. If you have the opportunity, you have to stop by. Also they now accept credit cards.

Paulie’s Pig-Out is sending smoke signals to the whole county. It was the smoke smell that brought me into this place. This joint is locally owned and sells pork ribs, BBQ chicken, BBQ pork shoulder and more. The ribs do have a nice smokiness to it and are served dry with a side of Paulie’s homemade BBQ sauce to drizzle over the top. The pork BBQ is Western North Carolina style with again a nice smoke flavor which maybe the best pork BBQ done Western NC style. Interestingly, the cole slaw is not prepared in the style of Western NC, but finely chopped and creamy mayo based. Paulie’s Pig-Out is moving up the bar for standard BBQ around Virginia. Whoa, this is seriously outstanding barbecue, cooked up by a one-man operation. Paul’s got the bbq smoker right out front, with its smoked meat enticing folks from miles around. You can easily see, driving by, if meat’s on the smoker. When you order ribs, Paul steps right out front and pulls your ribs off the grill of the smoker. Ribs are coated with smoked rub. The pulled pork is also fabulous, although our batch had a couple tough strands. His secret-recipe bbq sauce is tangy-sweet, with ample celery seed. He also has catfish on the menu and Southern sides like mac-n-cheese. Paul credits his skills to his dear mama, who once told him, «Paulie, if you know how to do this, how to cook for yourself, you’ll never go hungry.» Paulie’s is a «stop the car now» kind of place. Wow!!!
