There is nothing in the world quite like a little serendipity, and I found mine here. I’m pretty sure that I blew a tire well before I got north of Waco, and thanks to the idea of run-​flat tires, for a time I actually couldn’t tell the difference. All of that changed about the time I came rolling up I-​35 through Abbott, and the thudding flapping sound of fraying rubber beating the undercarriage of my ride made ignoring the problem impossible. I had to pull off the road, and immediately, and I was in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere.
I roll off the highway and about a half mile down the road the very first driveway I come to is Emilio’s — I kid you not. When something like this happens you have to feel lucky, and boy did I. I roll up, walk in, explain that it looks like I blew a tire and ask if he has something that would fit my car. Emilio says «sure» and tells me how much it’ll be. That would be $ 45, and within five minutes he was working on the change. It was easily the best forty five bucks I’ve spent in ages, and a short time later I was back on the road with my new wheel in place. Oh, and he also diagnosed an alignment issue (which was the reason that the other tire went south in the first place).
I wish Abbott was closer, as I’d definitely have him do more work for me. At the very least, if I’m ever headed up 35 and things are looking shaky, I know to keep my eyes up the horizon for a helping hand.
