Lateral

Everytime I go, it doesn’t disappoint me. I’ve gone to Lateral more than once not just for dinner or lunch but also to enjoy a drink with friends. It is, for sure, one of the best places to meet up with friends and enjoy some food and drinks.
I personally like better the one located in plaza de Santa Ana, although you have to be careful about your personal stuff if you decide to sit outside.
If i were you, I would give it a try. The service is good and the price for the experience and food is worth it.

I really enjoyed this tapas bar with my friends. The menu is very diversified and you can find something for everyone. I loved the risotto de setas, the chicken quesadilla, tortilla española, solomillo de brie or de cebolla, ceviche, croquetas de verduras, and many more… The cocktails are amazing and make right in front of you. You can’t make a reservation so make sure to take this into account because you will need to wait to get a table if you are a big group. The terrace is heated during winter, which is amazing!

Haven’t been here in six years and I still vividly remember the tortilla, albondigas, brie con jamon iberico, bistec, y croquetas. I brought my family here after several visits prior and it did not disappoint. Looking forward to making it back to Madrid one day so I can hunker down and kill a few plates of tapas again.
Sangria was on point. You don’t just forget great sangria.
American tourist tip: I somewhat remember this place having a fancier feel, but it being very affordable. Impress your amigos and or familia.

Lateral is always a classic choice when eating on Madrid. They have multiple locations and good cocktails. It’s slightly more expensive for tapas here. The one in plaza de Santa Ana is the best. The service varies with each location! Love the albondigas, raviolis, tartar de aguacate.

As others have said it’s a great place for a light meal when you have not quite transitioned to the Spanish way of eating your evening meal at 10pm. A little pricy by spain small plates standards but the plates are more interesting than usual tapas fare. We had a ceviche, meatballs and a deep fried eggplant with dips, and a black rice with calamari and associated wines.
It is quite popular so on a nice night it’s hopping and crowded but people move through quickly. I guess I would say if you were looking for the traditional Spanish tapas experience this isn’t it. But, if you want a sit down, relaxing, interesting Spanish influenced food it’s a good place to stop.

Yo no lo conocía y eso que la fama que tiene le hace justicia. Intentaré transmitir aquí la pasión con la que mi estómago vivió la visita a Lateral y si empieza a sonarme en mitad de la reseña es que estoy haciéndolo bien.
Pedí un par de tapas de carne. Pocas veces he probado algo tan bien cocinado en un lugar que aparentemente parece que va a ser de comida rápida. Estaba jugosa y el confitado de la cebolla era delicioso, parecía estar tomando un pastel hecho por las manos de la mejor repostera del mundo. Mi estómago acaba de comentarme que no recuerda muy bien el sabor y que tendremos que volver, creo que me está engañando pero le haré caso.
El local me pareció bastante acogedor y además tiene un pequeño velador con la misma ambientación que hay en el interior. Lo cual puede hacer que tengas una experiencia similar tanto dentro como fuera del establecimiento sin tener que esperar.
¡No dudéis ni un segundo! Cualquier Lateral es bueno para engordar la tripa.

Très bon repas ! La cuisine est fine, bonne et originale. Le cadre est très sympa, le restaurant beau et les serveurs agréables. Service rapide. Les prix sont tout à fait corrects.

Food was ok. Staff was very friendly and helpful, but the meal was underwhelming.

Great place for tapas and a drink. Perfect location to enjoy Madrid at night on their patio. The place is popular and you should be ready for a 20 minutes wait most nights, but you can have a drink inside at the bar while waiting, you won’t regret it. Compared to other restaurants in the area, this one offers a wider selection of delicious tapas all night (some places stop serving them after 8:30 pm) at a good price. Desserts are also good!

Amazing Experience! Excellent food, service & environment. We ordered 7 items between the two of us. Knowledgeable staff from the host [quick to accomodate], the servers [on point and professional] and the kitchen [paced our meal perfectly]. Totally recommend! Plus the bill was under $ 45 Euros!

The mojitos are awesome. They have multiple variations, some on the sweet side, so be careful, because they go down easily.
Everything is tapas and raciones, so it’s good to go with people and share.
You must try the goat cheese (queso de cabra), lettuce, and roasted red pepper on toast (super good).
The artichokes are ok, but there’s a TON of fried ham on top, and it would have been better to leave it freshly sliced.
Skip the albondigas — they’re dry and the Saudi is kind if salty.
Nice décor and a good-​size patio. It’s on a busy walking street, so expect big crowds and lots of tourists.

Nous y allons une fois par semaine entre expatriés belges. Ce n est pas cher, on y mange bien et le service est irréprochable…
Avec le temps nous avons sympathisé avec le personnel, nous sommes à chaque fois mieux accueillis que la fois précédente. Alors mon avis est peut être moins objectif que les autres mais pour avoir tester celui de santa Ana je peux vous assurer que le lateral de fuencarral est meilleur!

No conocía este lugar. Recomendado para ir de tapas pero salir de lo tradicional. Aunque amenazaban con tener que esperar mucho, creo que el hecho de ser lunes hizo que fuese sencillo conseguir mesa.
Los mojitos están bien de sabor aunque un poco pequeño el vaso.
Las tapas todas buenas en general, las alcachofas y la tortilla de patatas fueron sobresalientes.
Comimos entrecotte con cebolla caramelizada, sashimi de salmón, tempera de verduras y todo estuvo muy bueno

Para mi gusto toda la comida es excelente. Si es verdad que normalmente hay mucha gente, pero puedes tomar algo en la barra mientras esperas y al rato tienes mesa.
Creo que la calidad-​precio es estupenda y sus trabajadores son muy amables también.
Ya he ido varias veces y repetiré sin duda.

Si ya estás viendo las cinco estrellas, es que tienes que ir corriendo. Con la costumbre de comer barato y bien en Sevilla, era una odisea encontrar algo parecido en el centro de Madrid y Lateral no sólo lo consiguió, si no que me dejó encandilado para volver.
Y digo lo de correr, porque el único pero son las largas colas en hora punta, lógico al ser un sitio con tantas recomendaciones.
LA ENSALADA, espectacular, es una de las más ricas que he probado nunca. Soy muy exigente con el aliño y salí enamorado. El toque de vinagre, el sabor del aguacate, el queso, estaba excepcional.
Acompañando vino y con un par de tapas más a buen nivel, la velada lo merece. El solomillo con cebolla confitada está bsatante bueno, mejor que en otros sitios, pero ¡NO COMO LA ENSALADA!
Si estáis por Madrid y no queréis gastar 20 euros por persona, cualquiera de los restaurantes Lateral merecerán la pena.

Cadre sympa en plein centre de Madrid. Tapas correctes on s’attendait à mieux. Les brochettes Latéral en revanche sont délicieuses. Service très correct. En revanche nous avons été très surpris car peu cher.

Amazing food! Get the artichoke with Iberian ham shavings & the steak with melted Brie… unbelievably good! The watermelon mojitos and the frutas del bosque mojitos are delicious. Also, the chocolate cake is out of this world! You won’t be disappointed here!

La comida, no esta mal, no es la mejor comida del mundo pero tampoco esta malísima. La verdad es que no entiendo la fama, ni las maravillosas calificaciones es un restaurante normalucho tirando a malillo. Es muy pequeño y te ponen ahi 1000 mesas que no puedes pasar del pasillo al sillón sin molestar a los de al lado, y no soy una persona obesa, estoy bastante delgada. La comida no esta mala, pero tampoco es para echar cohetes la verdad o sea que le doy un 2.5.

Me encanta el sitio. Decoración muy minimalista y moderna. Tapas muy baratas y la mayoría sofisticadas y muy buenas. La calidad no es muy alta pero si hay una buena relación con el precio. Lo que menos me gustó fue el arroz del nigiri de solomillo y lo que más la tapa de solomillo normal.

The fruit mojitos were delicious with tons of mashed berries, ice, lime and rum goodness.
The tapas selection was very good. I highly recommend the pork sirloin with brie, goat cheese salad, and the Torrija for dessert (almost like French toast but so much more succulent).

Lateral is a trendy/​fun place to get tapas. I frequented the place while living in Madrid. They have some of the best Mojitos I have ever had, they are full of muddled fruit that you just want to get your fork out and eat after you’ve sipped up your drink! For tapas I recommend the mini hamburguesas (they have a couple different ones) and my favorite dish, the Ensalada de cecina. I don’t love their jamón tapas mainly because I think there are far better places for jamón in Madird. The tortilla is good also, it is a soft in the middle type. Making a reserva is a good idea but they do have a quick turn over time (unusual in Spain, I know!) as well as many other locations in the Madrid metropolitan area.

Siempre había querido entrar a un restaurante de esta cadena, y ayer por fin ocurrió!
buscábamos un sitio con precios asequibles y con terraza, así que decidimos probar.
Pedimos unas croquetas de verduras (bastante generosas) tempura de verduras con salsa de yogur (riquísimo) y solomillo con queso brie. Buenísimo todo.
Aunque eran ya las diez y pico y hacía buenísimo, no tuvimos problema para coger sitio en la terraza (lo cual supongo que también fue suerte claro)
El trato humano excelente y rapidez del servicio.
El precio, moderado y muy bien el relación con la calidad
Lo único, que las raciones son pequeñas, cosa que para mí en particular está genial porque no como mucho, sin embargo puede que alguien con más apetito se quede con hambre.

J’ai ADORE ce bar à tapas sur cette place madrilèné bien tranquille.
Le soir, il y a du monde et il y a possibilité de laisser son nom pour réserver une table dès que celle ci se libère. La terrasse est très agréable, avec plantes et petits brumisateurs d’air. L’intérieur est vaste et m’a semblé aussi agréable.
Nous avons pu manger plein de petites tapas:
— un risotto aux champignons et au jambon si délicieux que nous en avons re commandé un deuxième (il était siiiii petit)
— du poulpe confit avec mousseline de PDT, miam!
— une tortilla espagnole fondante à souhait
— un ceviche de bar; juste un peu décevant car les morceaux étaient trop gros
— un gâteau à la banane et au dulce de leche un peu bourrin mais très bon
Le tout arrosé d’un énooorme pichet de sangria très raffraichissante.
A deux, nous en avons eu pour… 44 euros.
Meilleur rapport qualité prix, il faut ABSOLUMENT y aller.

De loin mon restaurant préféré à Madrid.
Il y a plusieurs restaurants dans la ville mais mon préféré reste celui de Tribunal, avec sa grande terrasse ensoleillé et son personnel si sympathique.
La carte est exhaustive ce qui né rend pas le choix facile mais de toute façon tout est bon ! Le jamon iberico, les tapas au saumon, au boudin noir, les croquetas, les salades fraiches.
Et tout accompagné d’une sangria, c’est parfait !
Petit bémol sur le foie gras pas très bon…

Ir a Madrid significa sacar una noche para ir a cenar a Lateral. Sí, tan bueno es. La relación calidad-​precio es alucinante. A destacar: la rapidez en el servicio, siempre está lleno pero te ubican un momento en la barra, te van sirviendo la bebida, e inmediatamente te hacen un hueco. Si te gustan los mojitos tanto como a mi, debes probar los que preparan en su exclusivo bar destinado para esta exótica bebida. Luego las tapas, me encanta el solomillo confitado y el risotto. Los crepes de postre también están muy ricos.

not sure what the hype is all about here. grabbed some wine and beers… and ordered a few pinchos… very unmemorable. also ordered croquetas de chiperones… because i love croquetas and i LOVE chiperones… but they came with a squid ink filling with tiny pieces of chiperones… very fishy tasting and i wasn’t a fan.
wanted to like this place because there’s at least one in every neighborhood… but avoided the chain for the rest of the trip.

I love tapas, had a lot of tapas in the US and in Spain, and this is one of my favorite /​most memorable restaurant to get tapas. They put a modern spin on some of the traditional tapas and everything was delicious from the foie gras to the jamon dishes.

This place was recommended to me by another Unilocaler (thanks Briony) and it proved to be a great place to get some Tapas.
Firstly it was tricky to find at first, hidden in a corner, but it is worth it so keep looking.
By the looks of it there were very few tourists there and it seemed to be more locals which is always a good sign. We sat outside and they have the coolest sprinkler system that blasts you with water vapour every 20 seconds to keep you cool. It was just the ticket in that hot sunshine.
Food was great. I LOVED the sirloin with cream cheese and the salmon with Brie was very good to. The Spanish omelette was fine, although if you asked Trudie M she would probably tell you it was awesome.
Service was quick and friendly and they had a menu in English.
This is a place I will definitely return to next time I am in Madrid.

Bei Tapas im Lateral kann man nichts falsch machen. Teilweise sehr moderne Interpretationen. Besonders empfehlen kann ich das Avocado Tatar und den Ziegenkäse mit roten Paprika. Einzig die Atmosphäre leidet ein bisschen an ständiger Überfüllung und den Blicken der in der Schlange stehenden Kunden.
Preislich liegt Lateral etwas über dem Durchschnitt. Wenn man für ein Wochenende in Madrid ist, dann darf ein Besuch nach einem Shopping-​Tag nicht fehlen.

Un grand classique madrilèné. Une chaîné qui a 5 – 6 adresses dans la capitale, dont une très connue Plaza Santa Ana et une autre calle Fuencarral. Toujours la queue aux heures de pointe, mais les tables tournent vite. Tapas à quelques euros, assez originales. Je recommande la crème de melon froide au jambon fumé, le solomillo con cebolla confitada et les croquetas de jamon (classique). La ensalada Lateral vaut le détour, pour 7,30EUR vous apprécierez beaucoup et n’aurez pas faim ensuite. Les serveurs sont malheureusement souvent un peu pressant voire désagréables. C’est le seul reproche que je fais à ce restaurant.

Es un restaurante con varios en todo Madrid, y la verdad es que nunca fallan.

Los platos bastante buenos, pero dentro muy poco sitio para disfrutar de ellos. En la terraza no tienen éste problema. Bien de precio, siempre pedir tapas mejor que platos, probarás más variedad. Muy céntrico, para después ir de compras.

Above average tapas for a reasonable price in a swanky atmosphere. We walked away feeling overall pleased with the food (4.5 stars), but the service was a bit strange (2.5 stars).
Once we were seated, the server handed us menus in Spanish but didn’t offer English menus. Most people were sitting outside, but we were inside, and even though she walked by us half a dozen times, I couldn’t manage to catch her eye to ask if she had an English-​language menu. I got tired of waiting and just walked up to the hostess stand and grabbed an English menu, which I was grateful they had. We then had to wait about 10 minutes for our waitress to re-​acknowledge our existence, and even though I tried being polite and using some Spanish to order, she didn’t say a word to us from that point on. Even when I would ask for water, or order say, «Gracias,» I would get nothing in return. It was just bizarre. When one of the things we ordered was obviously misunderstood, because we got something else, I didn’t bother to say anything, because it just didn’t seem worth it.
OK, enough complaining. The food:
— Melted Brie with caramelized pepper — Creamy and well-​prepared pepper.
— Tempura of vegetables with tzaziki — veggies julienned and fried with yogurt sauce. Quite good.
— Potatoes with spicy sauce (Las Bravas) — your standard patatas las bravas, nicely fried, actually.
— I ordered the Meatball appetizer, which I really wanted, but got Goat cheese with red pepper preserves, which was pretty darn good. So, I’d order it again.
We also ordered a bottle of the house red, which was decent, but slightly misleading, as the bottles were only 0.5 liters (¹⁄₃ less than a normal bottle). I noticed that half bottles were also on the menu, so I’m glad we didn’t order that!

Este sitio empezó hace años como la verdadera renovación de los sitios de tapas de Madrid, pero se ha quedado ya un poco anticuado. Aún así, la comida no está mal y los camareros son majos, al menos en la sucursal de Fuencarral.
En su carta aún hay viejuneces como reducciones de vinagre (mmmm, novedad) y el foie como culmen del lujo. La cebolla confitada de sus pinchos también sobra por antigua y porque está un poco revenida y fría.
Pero tiene ensaladas interesantes, las croquetas son caseras y ponen un pan con tomate muy rico. Además, el vino se sirve en copas y no en vasito de chato, un detalle que no tienen en todos los bares de tapas. Además, tienen estufas en invierno por lo que se puede disfrutar de su terraza prácticamente todo el año.
Un sitio al que vuelves cuando no hay hueco en los demás, pero del que no te vas descontento ni mucho menos.

It’s a more upscale restaurant than most other tapa joints I’ve been to in Madrid, but yummy nonetheless. They do have an English menu and they have outdoor seating. It was a bit hot when I went (August) so we sat inside with the airconditioning :)
We got the appetizer sampling, which included the Lateral appetizer, sirloin with caramelized onions, goat cheese with sweet red pepper, brie with salmon, ham croquette and prawn croquette. Everything was delicious except I didn’t care much for the lateral appetizer (ironically). I really liked the croquettes! they were just oozing with flavor. The sirloin was also exceptionally good!
We also got the avocado tartar with shrimps. I would suggest passing on this. Although the avocado was quite fresh, it wasn’t anything particularly special. I also couldn’t really taste any shrimp.

Fui a comer con una amiga y lo cierto es que salí encantada del lugar. Los camareros simpáticos y amables con nosotras. Además, mi amiga me lo recomendó porque ya había venido en otras ocasiones y nunca la defrauda. Cocina creativa. Platos con una cantidad correcta de comida. La terraza pese a estar en verano es genial por los vaporizadores que hay. Todo esta muy muy bien.

I really enjoyed the tapas here, from their Jamon Croquettes to their Cheese filled salmon. Another thing I thought that was quite tasty was their Meat-​filled bellpeppers as well as their veal meatballs. Can’t go wrong with their decently priced pitchers of Sangria. This would be one of my stops if I were to ever visit Madrid again.
Make sure you DO NOT eat tapas at the place next door, I think it was named Café y Tapas. That place sucks.

Me encanta este restaurante, están situados cada uno de ellos en un sitio de especial encanto para mí.
Si me tengo que decantar por uno es por éste, el de la Calle Fuencarral, está al ladito del mercado y es genial para acabar una tarde de compras y sentarse en la terracita a cenar (a ver si llega ya la santa primavera)
Lo que más me gusta de su carta es la Degustación de Pinchos, para dos personas está genial porque vienen dos pinchos de cada y los postres… la tarta de chocolate que te ponen con nata líquida en una jarrita para que te eches a tu gusto es una pasada!

Cuando trabajas en Gran Vía (como fue mi caso durante una temporada), acabas harto de ir a los mismos sitios (sobre todo los de cadena… todos sabemos en qué sitio para gente VIP estoy pensando). Un día, una compañera vino diciendo que comiendo aquí se había encontrado a Hugo Silva. No nos convenció (éramos unas descreídas… y muy tontas). A los pocos días otra dijo que había comido bueno y barato.
Amiga, ahí sí que nos has ganado. Fuimos y, efectivamente, estaba todo muy bueno: la ensalada de jamón (ibérico) y mozzarela, la tortilla de patatas (jugosa, de esas que se rompen por todo el plato), los pinchos y hasta las bravas (a día de hoy puedo decir que he probado casi toda la carta, y esos son mis favoritos). Miedo nos daba ver la cuenta, como buenas descreídas, pero la sorpresa fue positiva: salimos a unos ocho euros por persona y estábamos llenas (también es cierto que los que son de buen comer no se llenan tan rápido).
Lo único que no me gusta es que últimamente está muy muy lleno y que tengo la sensación de que empiezan a racanear en las raciones (¡error!).
Por cierto, más tarde me encontré yo misma a Hugo Silva, también a Amenábar o Punset, por si os interesa el famoseo.

Un gran sitio para cenar, con platos de calidad y a un precio no excesivamente alto, unos 15 – 20 euros. Sobrio, eso sí, así que al que le guste el jolgorio y las tapas típicas, al más puro estilo tasca madrileña, que se abstenga, tanto por la comida que ponen como por la decoración, moderna y alejada de un bar tradicional.
Se cena a base de raciones o tapas pequeñas, por lo que tampoco sales rodando del local, pero todo está muy muy bueno. La única pega es que no admiten reservas, por lo que tuve que esperar en una barra atestada de personas unos 45 minutos hasta que pude sentarme en una mesa a cenar.
El concepto que transmite el local es que son especialistas en revolucionar y evolucionar las tapas y los pinchos con recetas originales y, desde mi punto de vista, lo han conseguido. Me encantó la patata rellena de jamón, parmesano y huevo de codorniz, no es nada cara y es de los platos más contundentes que tienen allí. Probé también el queso Brie fundido con jamón ibérico y el solomillo con foie y nada me decepcionó. La carta de vinos no es muy amplia pero puedes encontrar para todos los gustos y bolsillos.
Resumiendo, una muy buena opción para cenar pero sin poder reservar, así que te la juegas a tener que esperar o a que tengas que buscar otro sitio.

Yo del Lateral destacaría su provolone, acabé en la terraza del que está situado en la plaza de al lado del Mercado de Fuencarral porque a una amiga con la que iba de compras por allí le entró hambre y no había quién la callase, así que como queríamos algo más ‘elaborado’ que el típico sandwich o la tipica hamburguesa nos paramos en el Lateral, pedimos unas cañitas, el provolone y una ensalada de espinacas con pollo, todo muy rico.
El Lateral de esta zona en concreto tiene el encanto de estar en el centro de la ciudad y desde su terraza puedes ver pasar a todo ese gentío que recorre de arriba a abajo la calle fuencarral.

Empezaron con un local en el Paseo de la Castellana y en el plazo de trece años ya han abierto otros cuatro en lugares tan diferentes como la calle Velázquez, Arturo Soria, la Plaza Santa Ana y la plaza del mercado de Fuencarral. Será porque le gusta a todo el mundo.
Diseño de vanguardia pero sin ostentaciones, amplio y muy agradable. El tema de las velitas por la noche le concede una atmósfera muy íntima y especial, aunque las mesas estén demasiado juntas. Durante mucho tiempo consideré su tortilla de patata, si no la mejor de Madrid, mi favorita: bien consistente por fuera y poco cuajadita por dentro. Las croquetas, de notable alto; las tostas de solomillo con brie, idem de idem.
Lo que viene siendo cenar de tapas pero con la sensación de que son platos muy bien elaborados. De esos sitios a los que puedes ir varias veces por semana y uno nunca se cansa. Muy bien de precio, además. Y ojo que no admiten reservas.

J’adore cette chaine de bar à tapas. Avec seulement 10euros, vous allez vous d’une part vous régalez, d’autre part, né plus du tout avoir faim !
Au menu, des tapas à gogo coutant à chaque fois à 3−4euros. Mentions spéciales pour le poulet au brie fondu et le saumon à la cheese cream, tout simplement un explosion de saveur dans votre bouche :) Ce Lateral situé à en plein centre de Madrid a une terasse relativement grande, très agréable quand il fait beau. Une très bonne adresse !

Das Lateral gibt es mindestens 3mal in Madrid. Diese Tapasbar hat hochqualitative Tapas für relativ wenig Geld! Zu empfehlen ist die Platte des Hauses für 2 Personen! Ansonsten sind die Nachspeisen traumhaft gut, zum dahinschmelzen! Ich gehe immer ins lateral am Plaza Santa Ana, aber in Salamanca soll es noch ein besseres geben!
