I have had a weird preoccupation with Lidl for over a year now, but had never been. I imagined it to be like Rema 1000, but better. Sadly, it was pretty meh. Although the prices are almost unbeatable, it is worth it to pay the few extra kroner to get something on minimal decent quality. I did buy dried herbs here as they were fine, but everything else in this store is somewhat questionable. Maybe I’ll try again when I have more time to actually sift through everything, instead of just giving it a quick once over stink eye. This isn’t banished from my grocery repertoire yet, but it’s not going to be in heavy rotation either. Will attempt again.

I thought this was an okay grocery store. I just wanted a bottle of water but the $ 4+ price tag at 7 – 11 was a little insane(I know Copenhagen is supposed to be expensive but come on!) so I stopped by here to stock up with snacks for my week in the city. A 1.5-liter bottle of water here is 3.75DKK(+ a 3DKK bottle deposit)…much less insane. Prices here are what I’d expect to pay for groceries in the States. The fruit selection is a little limited but perfectly fine if you stick to the basics like apples and oranges.

I defy you to find anything edible at this store. It is brimming with weird ersatz food, none of which is very good at all. Avoid the cheaper breakfast cereals at all costs! Nasty, nasty, nasty. I would also advise you not to buy Victory Gin here either, because of the awful stories I’ve read about bad gin driving one to madness. A few points in its favor: it’s on a busy street and it’s much, much cleaner than many of the nearby markets(yes, Enghave Netto, I’m looking at you!) Ultimately, it’s a tremendous downer because of the bizarre pre-Glasnost era ambiance and selection, and the understaffed checkout counters. Cheap shouldn’t have to mean«You deserve whatever crappy quality you get,» but unfortunately in Denmark it very often translates to this very meaning. You should demand better, and that’s that.
