You can’t go wrong with the table side caesar. I had the steak Diane this time with was good. Even the kids menu at freshly prepared chicken fingers and of course the home cut fries are most people say this place is expensive but really we spent about 100 $ a plate and that included cocktails, wine dessert tax and tip. Really not much different than I spend at the keg Service was very good and attentive

Don’t waste your time tried to make reservations for a party if 10 and for a major city being told we are closing at 8pm on a Saturday night Really really a poor way of running a high end business

4.5÷5 Great Steakhouse Perfectly cook steaks and excellent service! Went to Hy’s for a Saturday dinner with 3 others at around 5:45pm. Parking here is a hassle and valet parking is a must. We were promptly seated and drinks were ordered almost immediately upon seating. The décor is quite nice and classy and the overall ambiance is relaxing. However, its quite dark and takes a while to get accustomed to the lighting. Two in the group ordered steak with lobster; one had fillet mignon and the other a New York strip. I had the 14oz New York and the other party member had 8oz New York. We were all extremely satisfied with how each of our steaks were cooked to our liking, medium rare! Each steak was seared on both sides and pink in the middle allowing juices to run when cut. For sides, we ordered mushrooms, asparagus and onion rings. Of the three, the mushrooms were the best by far with its buttery flavour and tenderness. The onion rings and asparagus were disappointing as both were over salted, leaving your tongue longing for a drink. For desserts we ordered banana flambé with ice cream, classic cheesecake with berries and Belgian chocolate bourbon cake with ice cream. Two of which were amazing but the cheesecake was very bland and basic, nothing out of the ordinary. The flambé was prepared table side as it should be and the show and smells it provides was an added bonus. With regards to the service during the duration of our meal, it was excellent! Our drinks never ran dry and Danny our server was very courteous and polite. Overall, we were very impressed with the food and the service. We’re all in agreement that we would eagerly return to Hy’s as long as the budget allows. TL;DR: If you want steak and an excellent meal, Hy’s is where its at! If you want appys, go to 529 Wellington.

For my first night in Winnipeg we decided to go to Hy’s, since it was right next to our hotel. Let me tell you exactly what I remember about the dinner: Nice environment, good company, and an AMAZINGWAITER! He was an older Asian man and was just the best part about the meal. I have never had a waiter as great as he was. He was accommodating, knowledgeable, and just the best. He was 5 stars! I had a wedge salad sans bacon with thousand island. It was pretty standard. I really liked the thousand island dressing though. For my main I had mac and cheese, which was not the best I had ever had but a good portion of it. I also had sides of french fries, mushrooms, and broccoli. Broccoli was good. Mushrooms, not my favorite. French fries were standard. Bathroom is kind of creepy all the way down in the basement! Maybe it’s just me because it was late but it felt like a long walk. Our waiter really made the experience for me. Probably wouldn’t come back because I’m a vegetarian and there isn’t really that much one can eat at a Steakhouse, but our waiter will be my new standard for service!

Fancy but not all that for the price. Service was great but the food was a joke. My husband and I went there for our 10 year wedding anniversary and was disappointed. My husband had the filet mignot, medium rare. Unfortunately it was more like medium dry. For the prices they charge they would at least make it to perfection.

Worst hys I’ve been to. Salty steak and cold dishes. 30 minutes to get a beer after order. I won’t be going back to this one. Horribly incompetent — only positive was very friendly staff. Can’t imagine how it is when it is busy.

For a high end steakhouse, I was extremely disappointed with the food but the service and décor was excellent. It was maybe the price tag of the steak that set my expectations high. I went with my colleagues after a long day at work and it was one of the closer restaurants by the hotel. My other colleagues said room service in the hotel was surprisingly good. However, I wanted to enjoy some company with a nice glass of wine and steak. We split an order of shrimp cocktail to ease the hunger as it was late. The appetizer was good but when the steak arrived, the first bite was not impressive. Definitely won’t be returning to Hy’s anywhere as the food was not worth the price. There are other steakhouses that would be better value in my opinion.

First of all I just want to say Hy’s has the best fries. I’ve had fries all over the world and these were the absolute best. The server was great, very attentive to our entire party of 15, all of our food was phenomenal, drinks were tasty, desert was so good we couldn’t share and will make sure to come back to this place. Super cool atmosphere too.

AMAZINGCHEESEBREAD! Came here two nights in a row and ended up splitting the same appetizers with a girlfriend because we liked them so much — the beefsteak tomatoes, creamed spinach, and garlic shrimp. We weren’t in the mood for steak but others said it was good. Classic and cozy steakhouse atmosphere with dark wood and leather chairs.

We dined at Hy’s Steakhouse in December 2013 and were very disappointed. The service was crusty and unfriendly; the maître d’ was cold and inhospitable and the food was meh! We paid a great deal for the food and expected something very special. The soup tasted like re-heated Campbell’s soup; the steak was rather tough and didn’t taste great. The potatoes were cold and the vegetables were flavourless. After spending $ 500 for dinner, we were disappointed and felt no warmth from the staff from beginning to end. In case you’re wondering if we are hippies or hipsters or rude youth, no. We are four business men in their 40s out for a celebratory dinner for the end of a good year. We all wished we had gone elsewhere.

Winnipegs steak place! Ive been here a couple of times usually for a special occasion. Both times was a really good experience. Service is always amazing. We can here with a party of 15, they had set us up in a private room with a long table and a balcony with the view of the lower part of the restaurant and bar. Located in downtown Winnipeg in the Exchange District. Décor is traditional dark wood, «mens club» feel to it. Valet parking for $ 7. But drive around a lot of free street parking after 6pm. I ordered the Tuna steak, done to perfection rare. What can I say, I usually don’t come to a steak place and have fish but we’ve been having a lot of steak lately and I just wanted fish, It was so good, it tasted like steak!(you know what i mean) Thick and juicy, yum yum yum!!!(3rd steak place in a week and a half, not a bad problem to have). I had a macchiato and cream brûlée for dessert need I say more, perfect way to end my meal. Rewind to a year ago, when I did have steak, I don’t recall exactly what I had, but I do remember telling the rest of my party how amazing it was, and next time Im in town we have to come back, and I did. Hys is not cheap, but worth it! I will defiantly be back next time Im in town.

My most recent experience here was the best I have had in years, therefor I feel it only fair to review this visit independently of the others(maybe improvements have been made?). Due to the fact that I am the«odd-orderer» of the group during most restaurant outings, I kept with my usual theme and ordered an Atlantic lobster tail, and the aged mac and cheese(normally a side dish to be split amongst the table). Of course they brought the melted butter(by way of tealight candle) along with the lobster tail, but it was really not necessary, the tail itself had been slathered in salted butter, which was more than enough for me — perhaps even a little too buttery(if that’s possible). The mac and cheese was ahhhh-mazing. So creamy, and cheesy(GOOD cheese). Definitely on the rich side, which is why it is meant for sharing… Oopsie. We also had the sugar snap peas; which were also amazing(order them without salt, and salt yourself if you desire), as well as the cheesy cauliflower side dish. I am indifferent toward the cauliflower, and think it might actually be more enjoyable if it was just roasted and not covered in the cheesy cream sauce, although that sure as hell didn’t stop me from eating it! Of course the wine selection is fabulous as per usual, I had an individual Prosecco, and then shared a bottle of the Koonunga Hill Penfolds Shiraz(YOUMUSTTRYTHISIFYOULIKEREDWINE); and the service was the best I have had there in a long time, the server was younger and didn’t seem stuffy like they often do. Don’t forget that Hy’s offers valet, pull up to the curb just to the right of the front door and drop your keys when you get inside, they even leave you mints and a bottle of water when they pull the car around for you. Jackpot!

Unfortunately for the price the quality of the steaks has gone down. Not the best anymore.

I went here for lunch and had the filet mignon with mashed potatoes. The steak was done perfectly… medium rare… and I loved the seasoning. The service was good, and the prices were good as well! I’m use to steakhouses with a la carte menus, so the cost of my meal was very reasonable. I went with a group of five. I was really surprised when the bill came and it was under $ 200! Great price for the quality of food and service!

Luckily my first experience eating at Hy’s Winnipeg was at their original location on Kennedy Street. I dined there a couple of times before they made the move to the Portage & Main location. It was quite the transition as the original place had a great classic, romantic charm and elegance to it. I fell in love with the steaks and the endless baskets of garlic toasts there. Call me nostalgic but I never clicked with the new updated location. It’s beautifully designed, classic dark steakhouse atmosphere. But I found the service really deteriorated and the vibe sort of changed to go along with the snooty new business crowd they were aiming for in that area. One would expect exceptional meals and service at the price points they are charging but unfortunately there are more misses and hits here. I’ve had steaks that were lukewarm or over seasoned and rock hard yorkshire pudding. Kind of unacceptable at a steakhouse. So I can’t say that this place pops into my mind when I want a delicious juicy steak. As for the lunch menu, it is pretty small and the price points hover closer to $ 20 for non-steak items whereas 529’s lunch menu has better price range and selection. Recently, I had their marinated steak salad for $ 16.95 — what a sad dish. The steak was ice cold with no trace of a marinade and came out rare. I prefer medium rare but I ate it anyways and was disappointed that I was suckered into eating an old piece of meat from god knows when and redressed with $ 2 worth of bagged salad. The vinaigrette was very average — probably from Kraft… LOL. You’ve likely had a better steak salad at any random restaurant than what I had. The best part of this place is the lounge. It’s a gorgeous room with oversized paintings, dark furnishings, and large leather chairs. It’s a great place to drop by for an after dinner drink(from somewhere else). You can enjoy the atmosphere while having the ability to hold a conversation without shouting(for some reason it’s barely half full the times I’ve been there). The bar and dessert menu could be expanded a tad but otherwise it’s a great lounge for a drink or two.

It’s a toss up who makes the best garlic bread, Hy’s or Topiary in Toronto. I could make a full meal out of garlic bread in either establishment. Hy’s Winnipeg is always an enjoyable evening. Staff are great and food is very good in any of their restaurants. It doesn’t have the romantic ambiance of their other spots, or their previous Winnipeg location, but it is attractively decorated. Had to start off with oysters, even if not indigenous to the area. Oysters were most acceptable, accompanied by a lame tomato based sauce, but also by a vinegar based side that was really good combined with some hot sauce. It was more like a wine vinegar base rather than a balsamic, first time I have had such an accompaniment to oysters, but it worked. Followed up with Hy’s signature steak«the only» which is a New York strip with Hy’s special barbecue sauce. A little salty, but oh so flavourable: cooked perfectly. Second night — went with the bone in rib, that was also very good, not exceptional but very good. A good espresso topped me off. It seems so easy to produce a good espresso, you have good beans, get the cup and water to temperature, what could be easier. Unfortunately getting a good cup of espresso on this side of the Atlantic is often a challenge. The desserts that passed by looked awesome, unfortunately too many years of fine dining don’t allow me to relay first hand experiences for this segment of the menu.

Now this Hy’s is ELITE! Unlike the ugly cousin in Toronto, this Hy’s goes the extra mile to earn your love. Though my complaints about the menu are similar on this one(sauces/over-seasoning), the meat is from the West, so it’s that much tastier than Ontario. They make your Caesar at the table like 529 does as well. The service is superb at this location and the location is great for tourists like me to Winnipeg. If only only Toronto could take a page out their Hy’s book…

Very upscale, posh steak restaurant in downtown. The bar is dark, with subdued colors and a quiet atmosphere. The dining room is more open and inviting. Beef is the name of the game. It’s expensive, but I had a pretty good NY steak. It wasn’t outstanding, but it was okay, maybe a little disappointing for the price. Despite the ties and white jackets, the staff was where this place lost two stars. I could not get a drink at my table and basically had to track some of the staff down. Nobody ever came back when my glass was empty, either.
