Holiday Inn Winnipeg-South

Our car was broken into during our stay, while parked in the hotel’s parking ramp. Someone actually took the time to dislodge the door handle to gain access.
We were incredibly disappointed to hear that the hotel only had one security camera in the parkade, and that it basically only covers 2 – 3 cars worth of parking spaces. Ours was not in those few stalls, so they did not even check the security cam for, say, a person or two walking by the camera, carrying the contents of my trunk. (We left nothing of value in view, everything stolen was from the trunk).
The hotel said we were the only ones broken into, so I have to wonder if we were targeted for having American plates on the car — I saw no others. I just can’t wrap my head around going to THAT effort to break into a car with no valuables (incentive!) visible. We cut our vacation short as a result, NOT feeling safe there.
If you are flying in, the hotel is decent, just somewhat overpriced. If you are driving in, I wouldn’t recommend staying there. We had been looking forward to this vacation for a long time. Ending on that note was awful — especially when compounded with not even being able to file a police report /​see justice.

First impression was the parking lot that was dirty, used as a smoking area for employees along with difficult to use parking spaces. Then thru a dirty back entryway hall that needed paint and a general clean up.
Front desk and lobby was clean, helpfull and tastefully updated and offered a quick check in. Room was very good on the 11^th floor overlooking downtown Winnipeg. Housekeeping was prompt and did a good job daily.
Then there is the restaurant buffet breakfast fo $ 11.00 plus another 13% in taxes.
Bottom line is for the prepaid breakfast package was poor and does not even compare to free breakfast offered at other Holiday Inns of many other chains. It was bad enough we gave away our vouchers for 6 breakfasts. Did not know the guests we gave them to as we did not want to get our relatives po’d with a cheap breakfast.
This location out to get smart and realize by offering an above average buffet or breakfast it would possibly encourage other traffic at the restaurant through out the day. In our case it turned us off from even trying other meals at the hotels restaurant.
I’d give the hotel a 4 star rating, but a 2 Star rating for it’s foodservice management.

Came here for some breakfast. They have a $ 11 buffet, but decided not to go for that today.
Staff were friendly, but a bit slow. The food isn’t the cheapest here either, at $ 10 for a breakfast (ie $ 1 less than the buffet).
I had the ham and asparagus omelette. It was a bit salty, but they didn’t skimp on the ingredients. The hash browns were crispy on the outside (just the way I like them), and the orange juice was tasty.
The restaurant does have a bar area, and serves some good stuff for dinner such as steak and veal during lunch and dinner. They have a Saturday night prime rib buffet right now.
I’m thinking of trying their dinner menu in the next little bit. Stay tuned~

One take away from my trip to Canada was that (almost all) Canadians are friendly folks! I’m gonna keep this review short and sweet.
PLUS
–The front desk service was very friendly and helpful. Being from the States, they gave us great directions and suggestions.
–The rooms were clean and well kept, with a slight exception which I’ll address below.
–Free wireless internet.
–Shower pressure was strong.
–Safeway right across the street.
DELTA
–Although the room was clean overall, there was trash in the trash can when we arrived in the room. The front desk quickly apologized for and resolved the situation by offering to pay for a meal at the restaurant in the lobby. It was a real stand up move by the manager so we appreciated it.
From what I understand, Winnipeg is not considered a real tourist destination by our neighbors to the north. That said, I would stay here again if I were ever in that neck of the woods. (G)O Canada!
