$ 5 for 4 samples. No complimentary tastings. Nothing we selected jumped out at us to buy a bottle but let that not deter you as people have different palettes and wines perform differently in different years. Show room was incredibly large and felt maybe a bit too sparse. They do carry all sorts of other kitch. Some related to wine and some reminded me of craft stalls I saw in India and Thailand.

A great team here @ Volcanic Hills; prompt, friendly service for sure! Ordered a case of wine after getting home & it arrived within a few days!

I came here the first year they were open and I said then that this was a place to watch. They have continued to amaze my palette with their wines. Amazing Gertz’ and splendid red blends. I was a little pissed that they were sold out of their merlot and Syrah. The staff here are great and have an awesome sense of humour and very friendly. A must stop every year.

Volcanic Hills was the first stop on our wine tour and I was impressed by the room wer walked into! Lots to look at and purchase and our tasting provider was funny, personable, and explained everything really well, encouraging us to give describing what we were tasting a shot without making it seem like we were being put on the spot. I instantly felt comfortable and the wine was delicious! Unfortunately, the doors were locked when we arrived so they weren’t quite ready for us, and she was still eating her breakfast so it felt a bit rushed. I would have liked to hear more about the history of the winery and the wines that we tried.

I found this winery pretty average. I didn’t dislike anything about it, but at the same time I wasn’t head over heels in love with any of their wines. They have a very large selection, which I think is great. I think this place has a great variety of wines for people just getting into reds. It has great beginner reds. I wasn’t really fond of any of the whites, but I did enjoy the dessert wines, and so did the boyfriend. I would definitely recommend stopping at this place as I feel that it is a bit of a hidden gem!

During my trip to Kelowna this was the first of three wineries I visited. The showroom/tasting area is quite large with everything except the cash desk lining the walls. The layout seemed a little odd as there was a ton of space with not much in it, maybe due to it being winter. Most of the wineries in the area charge $ 2 per tasting and some have a package deal for multiple tastings. These guys also follow suit with giving you the sample fee back when you buy some bottles. The tasting was fun. The gentleman helping us was very unassuming and very knowledgeable. There was no pretentiousness found here as you get with some wineries. He answered some of our questions which weren’t basic, but my friends and I aren’t exactly wine experts either. Of the handful of tastings, there was some good diversity with options other than the usual Pinots, Merlots, and Cab. Sauvs. For the reds, a few of which were blends, many were a little on the fruity-side for my liking. However I did try one that I ended up buying a bottle of called Eruption. I also liked one of the late harvest desert wines they had, but knowing I had a few more wineries to go I skipped making a purchase on that one for now.

Stopped by Volcanic Hills while looking for wineries to visit on the west side of Kelowna over the long weekend. The building is quite new and holds a large-sized shop and tasting area; which is a bit more casual inside than some of the other wineries we visited(no staff uniforms, for example). You also can’t miss it, as it really stands out on Boucherie Road. I chose to do the 2 white wines, 2 red wines tasting for $ 2(which is waived if you purchase a bottle). I tasted the Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer 2009, Gamay, and Magma — all of which I enjoyed and found to be full of flavour. The Gewurtz was a nice treat for my preference for sweet tasting wines, but for the reds I loved the lightness of the Magma — which we purchased to go with our steak bbq in the evening(perfect pairing!). I did not catch the name of the woman who helped us, but she was very friendly and did her best to answer our questions along with a group that came in by van. I had not heard of this winery, so it was a pleasant stop along our tour. Definitely worth a stop and a tasting if you’re heading to or from some of those larger wineries on the west side.

I’m by no means a wine connoisseur. I know reds go with meats and give me headaches, and I know whites go well with seafood. I also know ice wine is pretty damn good sh*t. In my weekend Kelowna self-guided wine adventure, Volcanic Hills was my most memorable experience. First off, ask for Debbie when you arrive. What a character she is. A straight up shooter, she made the experience awesome. Unlike the la-di-da type atmosphere and service of some of the big wineries, Volcanic Hills along with a couple other small wineries we went to, have genuine friendly and fun people. This is a very new winery. I think they said it opened May ’10 or labour day and is owned by one of the brothers from Mt. Boucherie winery. Supposedly some family fight was the root cause. I’ll save making a wine fool out of myself, but all the wines we tried were very distinct/unique in taste. Their ice wine was spectacular! Their $ 50 bottle of(can’t remember name) was just as good as $ 80+ bottles of other wineries. All their wines are very reasonably priced and are only available in a few select stores to date, so best to stock up. Quick tip: Debbie pours ‘em fast. Be careful! We got pretty hammered.
