I am a newcomer to Canada, so Shopper’s is new to me, but man, does it blow Walgreens and Rite Aid and CVS back in the States out of the water.(Full disclosure — I used to work at Walgreens and so may be a little bit bitter and jaded about drugstores in general.) The cosmetics department has just as nice a selection as many department stores. Benefit and Stila and lots of other brand name cosmetics, plus your normal Cover Girl and such. It’s like a little mini Sephora. IN A DRUGSTORE. Had wonderful service there returning a product from another location. One of the girls who was working today hooked me up with something more suitable. And it was 20x Optimum Points day today. I’m loving their rewards card. I find Uptown to be a generally obnoxious place to visit, but I think I’ll be back to this Shopper’s location.

I have been a loyal customer of Shopper’s long before the Optimum program started. Though I still love the chain, I will only return to this location under dire cirtumstances. This newest(and largest?) Victoria location is at Uptown. It has a much better selection of cosmetics than my older/local stores, but I find the service here terrible. I have gone at different times and on different days but have been underwhelmed on every occasion. I have gone here for bonus events due to the larger selection of products. Once, when I had a few things to pick up for my mother, I cdn’t find some products and needed some clarifications as to the sale inclusions from the flyer. It took about 5 mins to flag someone down, I explained what I was looking for, then she told me that she was not familiar with the section and wd find someone. 10 mins later, I hadn’t seen her, so I flagged down another person, explained the situation again, and she also disappeared to the back… in the end I wasted about 30 mins without ANY reuslts. Another time, I had found all I needed and went to pay. There was one cashier at the front, with a line-up, and it seemed they were waiting for something(price check?) and two at cosmetics –though only one cash was in use. With one person ahead, I waited at cosmetics. The person ahead of me was being assisted with some sort of assessment and the other cosmetics person was just standing around. The latter at least acknowledged me, but neither apologized for the wait or offered to pass my purchases through. In the end, I dropped my basked and walked out. I have worked retail, and understand that stores can be understaffed, so I don’t expect immediate results, but I do fault the staff on hand for poor to non-existent customer service.
