I’m so grateful there is still a vibrant source of alternative movies in town to purchase! Videomatica is a sure-bet for Christmas gifts and when in need for hard-to-find flicks for folks who love culture, cinema and life! Thanks for being there for us. I hope the peanut M&M machine went with your store when it moved recently into its new location next door. I miss the rentals, but I love all the great sales… amazing reductions in prices… I always stock up and plan ahead for birthdays!

How nice to still have a video store in Kitsilano for us folks who like the DVD format. Here can be found a very wide variety of movies on a wide selection of subjects. Great foreign movies too. Business is not so brisk these days I suppose but for us it means the sole staff member is happy to take all the time necessary to assist in choosing some titles. They take trade-ins — in good shape of course. Not a huge amount of money is offered for your previously viewed material but enough to make it worthwhile.

I have been a customer of 20 years. I had rented some old James Bond movies just before Christmas. The individual that rented them told me they needed returned in one week. Tonight Joe, the manager told me he ‘did not believe my story and I owed $ 47 in overdue charges’. I was horrified, as a business woman in Vancouver and loyal supporter of Videomatica to be treated so rudely and called a liar … in front of customers is completely uncalled for. I have always supported Videomatica and I believe an apology is in order from both the owner of Vidoematica and Joe, the rental manager. He was so bold to say the owner would not even speak to me on such a matter. Imagine the owner would refuse to speak to a long term loyal customer … I wonder what the owner would say? Rogers Video is closing video stores because of competition from online Netflix etc. It seems unbelievable that Videomatica would treat their long term customers with such contemptible behaviour. Lovely staff help you find what you’re looking for when searching through the racks becomes too daunting(and it does). Several computers help you search their database independently too, linking to hot picks(most popular rentals) and a slew of genres. You can also leave your feedback, offering up a 1 out of 10 rating, for the next discerning customer(oh, how us Unilocalers love to assign a rating!). Signing up for their facebook group gives you a chance to win monthly prizes too, kinda cool I think… but my favourite thing is their Impressive documentary section which always keeps me coming back for more.

The only place for foreign movies of all origins or odd ones that you can’t find anywhere else, Videomatica is a great place for flicks. From documentaries, classic movies, foreign and new releases too, they really run the gamut when it comes to movies. The coolest thing? They have silent movies, movies from the Vancouver International Film Festival, Literary adaptations, British, gay and erotica movies too. I like the Kitsilano location and the fact that you can sign up to get information on releases when they come in. The best part? $ 3.99 rentals on Wednesdays.

In the mood for something a little strange? Foreign? A cult classic? Videomatica is a special kind of video rental shop that offers a very different selection than the big guys. It’s not always going to carry the latest Hollywood blockbuster, but if you want more than exploding helicopters you’ll find it here. You can ask the staff for tips. I always found that they were really helpful. They take the time to ask you questions to a good idea about what it is that you want in a movie — they don’t try to push what they like on you. So it can be the start of a beautiful evening on the couch. They also have a few parking spaces in the back alley behind the shop. There’s also a return drop-slot there, so it’s easy to get the rentals back.
