The Korean food here is pretty good and Japanese food are good other than sushi(which is still ok). The service here is pretty awesome. My friend and I arrived 10min before their happy hour. They were kind enough to let us order happy hour even tho it was not 2pm yet. I would say if you want something Asian this is the place to go.

I disagree with many of the reviews on here, the sushi was good AND it was pretty cheap — good for the college student budget! I got the rainbow roll and the salmon avocado roll. I recommend the TAKOYAKI(battered spheres of delight with octopus in the middle) as well! When I asked the waitress what some of the ingredients were she was unable to explain properly, but the service was good, the ambiance was nice and quiet. I’d certainly go back!

The portion is super small here. I got one of those $ 16 combo and all it really is a soup, 3 tiny portion Korean appies, a bowl of rice and 5 small pieces of short ribs and that was it. I am already a small eater and there is no way that thing will fill me up. I also got a scallop cone to go with it. Without the scallop cone, I would still be hungry. The scallop cone was not that fresh. I am wondering how can my sister eat at such a place… Well I guess UBC students want different food or a place to sit in then they have to suck it up. There is almost no service here. I think the owner is the guy with a frown on his face. Yup that is the owner and yes it does not sound friendly to me. There was one waitress that is running around like crazy. I feel for her. She must be exhausted. I have to say I sat there for over 30 mins before we actually got tea. Yes they totally forgot about us. The food took a while to come as well. Grr… How could someone run a place like this. Horrible Horrible and Horrible

I brought a girlfriend here on a Thursday afternoon for lunch(she’s enrolled in UBC for the fall and wanted to show her a spot to get some Korean food) — by Friday morning at 6:00am I started violently vomiting. My girlfriend who I brought here had to catch a flight in the morning at 6:00AM and she started violently vomiting while going through security. I highly doubt its a coincidence that we had this meal together and both started getting sick the same amount of time later — we def got food poisoning here. DON’T GOTOTHISRESTAURANT.

this place really isn’t that bad. considering what and where it is. 3 stars is generous, yes. the place is a bit dumpy and sad, yes. but the food is perfectly fine. what it lacks in presentation(i.e. serving rice in plastic bowls instead of the stainless steel ones) it makes up for in taste. it’s like a homey and casual. yes, it’s overpriced, but if you are a UBC student, think of the time-cost analysis, right? in the amount of time it would take for you to take a bus downtown(where, obviously there would be better japanese or korean food), you can just have a meal, and mosey back to campus.

Food was average. The service here. LOL. The service is one old grumpy asian man who does not smile and throws the menu and drops the plate on your table. I only go here when I HAVE to, but I never tip. Terrible service.

If you live on campus and you don’t go beyond UBC campus, and you really want Korean/Japanese food, uhh sure, go right ahead to this place. I’m Korean, and I don’t find this restaurant’s food that great(«OMG! A KOREANREVIEWINGON A KOREANPLACE?! THISMUSTBETRUE.» Haha just kidding). Expensive, small-portioned, average taste… I urge you to be more adventurous and go to Downtown, or Surrey, or anywhere else BUT here for Korean food.

I do not even know where to start. After how I was treated today over two pieces of toro I will NEVER go back. It was ice cold pasty and tasteless. I told the waiter after being brave and trying one piece, that this was wrong it could not be toro. He came back with a slab of fish I would not feed my dog let alone shovel to customers. I told him I am not eating this and it was disgusting. When the«chef» heard that she pitched a small hissy fit. When we went to pay I told the owner that it was bad sushi he told me I was wrong and smirked at me going on how many types of toro there was. I do not care it looked bad and had no taste. I would be ashamed to serve that. He eventually said«FINE» and removed the $ 3 for the two pieces. He lost a repeat customer over $ 3. Yeah it was only $ 3 but they were so bloody ignorant and rude I was not lettin it go.

I would love to tell you that Suga Sushi is wonderful, but unfortunately, it is not. I came here with one of my friends for a lunch date on campus. We chose it to have a quiet place to sit down that wouldn’t be too expensive. Let’s start with the positives. Suga Sushi is a large sushi restaurant located on the second floor of a building in UBC Village. It’s décor is cute, and the restaurant is definitely clean, which is a nice change from a lot of places on campus. There is tons of seating, so this place would be great for groups. The menu is quite large with both japanese and korean food items, so there are plenty of options to choose from. Also, the food comes unbelievably fast. My friend said that she’s pretty sure most things are prepped ahead of time, and I completely believe her. Now for the negatives. This was the first sit down sushi restaurant I’ve been to that didn’t offer us tea. I really enjoy tea, so that was disappointing. I ordered a bento box with mixed tempura, chicken teriyaki, and california rolls. The miso soup was alright, but you can’t really mess up miso soup. The tempura and california rolls were alright as well, but nothing to write home about. The chicken teriyaki was a bit tough and flavourless. The salad was the biggest disappointment, since it was absolutely drenched in dressing. With tax, the bento box came to $ 10. My friend was right, it wasn’t too expensive. It just wasn’t flavorful, or memorable, or worth the $ 10. There are much better options on campus for food.

«Meh. I’ve experienced better.» Sums it up quite nicely. I’m sure we all know that everything at UBC is a rip-off. Suga is no different. The décor is nice, and it’s one of the few clean sit-down restaurants in the village, but what in the what is this place charging for? The menu items are mostly standard, with the exception of the Korean food and the tempura California. Service is sub-standard, considering that it’s near impossible to get a drink refill, and they tend to lose your order during the lunch rush, which is about the only time I go. And the portions. That’s my biggest problem with this place. I’ve calculated it and I’m actually better off just ordering nigiri, because it’s cheaper, and the thin pieces of fish on top are — in all seriousness — about the same size as the thin slices of sashimi that you get for a few bucks more. Suga, I am not paying for the privilege of your company. I really do come here because I want to eat. Simply put, save yourself the trouble and just don’t come here. The service is a mess, and they clearly have no understanding of their clientele — there are starving university kids on campus, and they pay for quantity. Those of us who work on campus can afford to pay for quality, which we still don’t get here, so I’m actually asking myself right now why I even still eat at Suga anymore. I think it’s so the cashier at Osaka thinks I have a varied diet.

I’m sure this is old news, but they have changed owners as well as their menu. Now, they offer both Japanese and Korean cuisine. I admit that was an exciting change, and I had looked forward to trying it. Before changing owners, I used to eat there quite often. Now, things are a little bit different… Let’s start with the good stuff. The ambiance, for those of you who haven’t been there, is very nice and gives off an authentic Japanese restaurant feel. The interior design, along with the pictures on the wall, add to the authenticity as well. I like how it’s very cozy. It’s especially nice to eat there on a rainy evening, sitting by the windows and staring out into pitch-black nothingness. Quite a nice feeling~ The service is decent. After being there several times, under the new ownership, I can say that there hasn’t been any forgotten orders, as compared to before. So that is a good sign. The waiters/waitresses were responsive, and the orders arrived fairly quickly. They did make an effort to come and refill the hot tea, so that’s another plus. Now here’s the not-so-good part. While their menu size increased, their portion size decreased. The udon(one of my favorites) seemed to have shrunk a little. It wasn’t as «rich» as before. Albeit not too thrilled about it, it was still acceptable. I haven’t had the sushi since they changed ownership, so I can’t comment on that. On the next two visits, I ordered their Korean cuisine. That was, unfortunately, a little bit disappointing. The side dishes arrived, and I was slightly confused at first. Most of the Korean dishes on the menu offered side dishes. However, we ordered 3 meals, with only one small plate of sides to accompany. On top of that, the selection of the side dishes was minimal, and the potatoes were not cooked thoroughly. Now the main courses. The spicy beef soup wasn’t anywhere near impressive or authentic, but the Japchae dish was alright. Overall, not Korean cuisine at its finest. The price is a bit high, considering the amount of food you are paying for. The bill comes out to about $ 11-$ 15 per person, usually. Unless… you order one of those more expensive combos, which can be as expensive as around $ 18-$ 20. Verdict: I think this place offers a nice atmosphere. Overall, food-wise, the Japanese menu seems to be a better choice, as I wouldn’t recommend the Korean food here. Suga is only an option if you are close by, living on campus, etc. Can’t say I love this place. I’ve had better.
