Pasta Mondays — $ 5 + tax for a small container of pasta. Enough to feed me on a not-too-hungry day. Inexpensive yes, but the food left something to be desired. My ravioli was hard. Filling was alright. Sauce was watery and didn’t taste different from a canned tomato pasta sauce.

There are food carts everywhere in Vancouver, so it’s pretty hard to choose one. I decided to give slingers a chance and boy was I surprised. Slingers serves home cooked Italian food that may as well come out of nana’s kitchen. I ordered their meatball sandwich and wasn’t really expecting anything special. WRONG. I don’t think I’ve ever had a better meatball. This thing was soft, juicy, tender with a tiny kick of spice to it. WOW. It’s topped with some greens and a garlic cream sauce that helps balance it out. The result? Well, nothing cause it disappeared into my mouth. Apparently they also make lasagna OMG. I may have to camp out when I’m back in Vancouver next to try their whole menu.

In my quest to find the perfect eggplant parm in Vancity, I stumbled upon Slingers on my lunch hour. It was a decent sandwich(although I asked for no onions and they forgot), But it still does leave me craving a trip to St. Lawrence Market in Toronto! The plus — super friendly staff!

I hate to be Buzz Killington, but I’m not a fan of Slingers. Sure they had Pasta Mondays, which is a great deal. $ 5 + tax for a dish of their pasta. They had 2 types today, –Butternut Squash and Ravaoli with olive oil and rose sauce. Both are sprinkled with parmesan and served in environmentally-friendly take out boxes.(I like that part) I tried both and they just tasted like boiled pasta with sauce splashed on top. I did find the filling inside the butternut squash tastier than the ravaoli with tomato sauce, but I got bored eating this after 5 bites. The chick taking people’s orders was grumpy and wasn’t very friendly either. That irks me. There’s so many carts all over downtown, I didn’t have to pick this one. I should have read the other reviews and tried the sandwiches instead. Who knows, I might give this place another shot.

Ok, this place is totally 4 star+ territory. Been twice, both times have been awesome! I just tried the calamari sandwich and it was unreal. The calamari is perfectly seasoned and battered, and that fried lemon slice adds the perfect amount of sweet and sourness. With the battered peppers, the cloud-like bun and the bitter arugula, this is one of the better sandwiches I’ve ever had. I’m surprised at the mediocre reviews, I think Slinger’s has really stepped up their game lately, if you haven’t been in a while, get down there and check it out.

Vancouver is not really a great eggplant town in that a lot of restaurants don’t have eggplant the menu. So when I read about the delicious eggplant Parmesan sandwich by Slingers Mobile Food, I was excited. When I eventually tried it, it was EXCELLENT. It has good portion and balance of the major food groups: eggplant, garlic, spicy and hot. The sauce was chunky and textured with pieces of pickled eggplant. The people there were very nice and helpful. Note that they will change location on May 1, from Granville at 11th. TO Hastings near Granville. Consult iPhone app«Street Food». Open MONDAY to FRIDAY.

I had the eggplant sandwich, and it was amazingly delicious! All the flavours married together so perfectly. The bun was soft and the warm sandwich was comforting. This is a definitely go-to spot for yummy sandwiches and the like. I’ll be revisiting you soon Slingers!

Driving down Granville and I spotted the Truck! Veal Sandwich! I found a parking spot and hoofed it back to the truck. Got up to the front window and ordered the Veal. Sorry but we don’t make the Veal anymore! What? Really? I guess Vancouverites and their wide variety of cuisine couldn’t handle a simple sandwich from a food truck. Or maybe its the fact that a lot of Torontonians love it that they can’t handle? So I had to settle for the Chicken Parm. Not that I was settling, but, y es the Chicken Parm is a great sandwich, Spicy Marinara, Sauteed Onions, Melted cheese, all wrapped up in a portuguese bun!(which I believe made the sandwich much more enjoyable than when i had it on the foccacia bun) It is not a Veal Sandwich! I guess I will have to wait till I get back to Toronto to get my veal fix! I will be back!

* Veal Parmigiana truck * I ordered the veal parmigiana sandwich and I really liked it. Service was very friendly, and efficient. After taking my order they fresh fried the veal cutlet for the sandwich. It was lightly breaded and fried perfectly. The veal was still quite tender inside with the coating being nice and crispy. It was covered with a spicy marinara sauce that had strong bold flavours, as well as some melted mozzarella cheese. There were also sauteed onions, mushrooms, and what I believe was spicy eggplant. All of this was served on a soft bun that soaked up the sauces nicely and tied everything together. Photo: Sadly, I’m guessing that the flavour profile at this truck likely won’t appeal to about 95% of people in Vancouver as it borrows heavily from the New York style Italian food that comforts people used to it, and is viewed as overly heavy and non-delicate for those who are not. But I do hope they succeed as it was a lovely comforting lunch treat. I’ll be back!

Went to Slingers today since we are running a promotion with them soon and had the veal sandwich. It was really good and satisfying, I love Italian food to begin with so I’m bound to like anything with Italian ingredients. The best thing about this sandwich is the bread, it doesn’t massacre the roof of your mouth like all other gourmet sandwiches, and your jaw doesn’t get tired from trying to rip the bread out with your teeth. It’s definitely comfort food. I also had their daily special broccoli soup and it was very hearty; it was sunny today and I actually think it might taste better in the rain! Was chatting with them while waiting for my food and they said most people don’t see food trucks as a restaurant of it’s own, I thought that was inspiring, it’s true, we are too used to street food being hotdogs. Will definitely recommend this and come back.

Discovered this place as I was walking in to work. The handwritten sign promising«Macaroni Chipotle Cheddar Cheese Balls» sounded too appetising to pass up! And I wasn’t disappointed! Creamy rich cheddar cheese macaroni inside a crispy skin, with a great spicy sauce on the side! And they were massive! And all for $ 5 inc tax!!! Went back for them on the Wednesday, but was told they only did them on Fridays. Friday treat it was! I had another set before I discovered the delights of their«Lemon and Chive, Mozzarella stuffed Risotto Balls»!! They were a couple of bucks more, but worthy of being pricier! Absolutely lush! Everything you thought they would be, swimming in a seriously tasty sea of Marinara! Should’ve written the review then, whilst we were still in our honeymoon period! I’ve been there 9 times now, as I can tell from the 8 stamps on my reward card,(I forgot it once); and every time except twice, people who’ve ordered after me, have had their food before me! The first couple of times I shrugged it off. It’s a lunch queue at a food van! No biggie! But to keep on happening! One time I actually stopped by early on, ordered, and arranged to come pick them up at 2pm. When I got there, they hadn’t even been put on to cook, and I had to wait 10mins, which sort of defeated the point of pre-ordering them! Still the Ballisciouness had me returning, but it kept happening! Culminating in today when I popped down there, ordered my Balls, went to the cashie to get some wonga so I could pay, and when I got back, people who’d ordered after I’d paid were served, even the woman who ordered the same thing as me! 20mins isn’t a long time to wait for something in the grand scale of things, but it is when you’re bloody fuming, and only have 30mins for lunch! Don’t honestly think I’ll be going back! Even though I only have to buy one more set of balls to get some free! Life’s too short, and my irritation today was exacerbated by my balls tasting like they’d been fried with the meat,(bloody hell the double entendres are coming thick and fast), which is no good for a veggie! I would still recommend their food, but at the moment, their balls outshine their service!

Well, I sent my reliable source and a friend back here today(I wasn’t close by). He really liked the veal sandwich, and the owners are wonderful. We both think the truck would do even better if they chose a consistent theme, however, which seems to contribute to the success of some of the other trucks dt. But their service would def. receive a five which goes a long way. Since they are new, maybe they just need a bit of time to work out the kinks? I would go back next time and try something different.
My only regret is that I didn’t get to go today, too, and I will visit them again when I have the opportunity.
