Congratulations! You have find yourself the worst Japanese restaurant in the lower mainland. Why? Grossly unbalanced ratio of food quality to price on dinner menu. $ 4 for one piece of salmon sushi with rice the size of half my fist. The Toro wasn’t any better as the fish lacks any flavour and taste. Service wasn’t any better. I asked for the cheque. Waitress acknowledged my request through a verbal and physical cue. Promptly proceeded to the only other table occupied inside the restaurant and took out her order sheet to take the order of the other table. Said waitress unfamiliar with the restaurant’s sad menu seeks support from neighboring staff. Walks by my table completely. Luckily I got the attention of neighboring staff and eventually my request for the check was honored. So congratulations on eating at one of the most ill fated restaurants in BC. Kampai!

Great option for sushi just outside of the CBD. It took a couple extra minutes to walk here, but it was worth it to have a bit more peace and quiet. We got the real crab California roll, spicy tuna roll, salmon avocado roll and an order of mixed tempura. The food came out so fast, I almost didn’t even believe it was actually ours. I don’t know what they are feeding their chefs, but those guys are like lightning fast. Must be some kind of green tea infused steroids or something. I need some of that. Fish quality was right on, and I was especially impressed about the crab. It was just under $ 10, so definitely one of the more expensive rolls, but the quality was #unreal. I was also particular happy with the tempura. The batter was light and crispy… unlike some places who coat the veggies and prawns in a thick, fish and chip style batter(bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point). Atmosphere was nice too, especially because I wasn’t in the mood for a hectic meal in the CBD. We had lots of space, and it was nice and relaxing. Good job Ryuu!

Good service and food taste very good and fresh. Definitely will go back. Sake flight for 8 dollars, 3 premium sake, very nice. Thumb up. :)

Came in on the way home. Surprised by a) the Japanese staff, b) the fairly authentic menu c) the food and d) the service. It was a rainy Monday and the place was almost empty. Check it out. It deserves the business.

I read an article from LifeVancouver that the owner of Ryuu Japanese Kitchen has been replaced, and is now produced by a chef who used to operate Kujaku Café. ( ). I loved the lamb curry in Kujaku Café so I decided to give it a try. It’s pretty good. I like how they use some sweet potatoes in their curry. I still prefer the lamb curry in Kujaku Café but it’s still good. Karaage is normal.
I will try tonkatsu teishoku next time :)

3.5 I heard through the grapevine that the owner of yoshoku-ya(used to be on Denman) took over this place so I had to give it a try. The interior is more sports bar than sushi joint. They have lcd tvs scattered throughout the restaurant(not recommended as a romantic date spot). Their menu selection was pretty decent, but they left out some of my yoshoku-ya favourties(i.e. katsu curry, corn soup, deep fried oysters). I opted for the tonkatsu. It was crispy on the outside and juicy in the inside — just what I expected. I’ll be back to try out their other menu items. It’d be a 4 if the interior was a bit nicer.

When my wife was young she had a dog. The dog’s name was Ryuu. Ryuu means dragon in Japanese. Ryuu got loose one day and escaped the from back yard. Ryuu took off. The neighbour hated Ryuu because Ryuu barked all of the time. After a period of time Ryuu came home. But he was hyper. He ran around and round in circles and then dropped dead. It was never proven but everyone thought for sure that the neighbour poisoned Ryuu. Poor Ryuu. Somehow eating here reminded me of this story. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because the story and eating here are not all that entertaining, nor make you feel good. The food was not great, memorable or unique, yet the service was good. Poor Ryuu. The dog and this restaurant. g

Good sized rolls, unlimited rice. Soup was good too, but noodles were not the greatest quality. Tempura was good. Everything tasted fresh and some of the staff was really friendly. They didn’t let me have the VIP table though.

This sushi spot is my favorite if I don’t feel like settling for cheap sushi, or dishing out too much on some good fish. Here, the quality of the sushi transcends the price that is given. Some of my favorites are the hamachi, sockeye, and toro nigiri, which are all fantastic. The service is very good, but it may due to the less crowded nature of the restaurant on my various visits. They often make sure that your stay is enjoyable, and every time I’ve been here so far it has. Great, moderately priced sushi by the heart of downtown.

Back again for another vosit. This time i try their yoshoku dishes. ryuu offers a lunch menu with a variety of box set items but the yoshoku dishes caught my eye as I wanted some variety. The omelette rice has a tomato and chicken fried frice with onions. Crunch and savoryness is met in every bite and the omelette is well done. Demiglace sauce is generous and enough for every bite. If kita no donburi new menu is a bit too daunting for you and you want a taste of yoshoku ryuu has you essentials covered

Pretty decent sushi, and some good cooked options as well. The tonkatsu/curry is pretty good. Very friendly and professional service. Right at the center of downtown and definitely better than some nearby options.

3.5 review The staff is nice and seated me quickly, but I also had a reservation. There were a few young ladies sitting waiting to be seated at when I arrived but — felt like perhaps they have been ignored for a while. Presentation on the dishes were pretty good. There was an instant where we could not name 1 of the raw fish in the dish was as it is because it is rarely served here.(I will give you a hint. If you look at one of my photos with the sashimi plate — there is Salmon, there is Tuna, there is …) Once you find out what it is, you will know why it’s rarely served. The food is quite nice here, but no one really comes to check up on you how everything is tasting. One of the waitresses was very kind to help us take a group photo at the end of our dinner. I must say though, they were pretty keen on refilling our tea cups during our meals.

Came here yesterday afternoon since the majority of the reviews seemed to be really good. The service was good and the inside was clean and modern. The place where they lost stars is the food. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great either. The pricing isn’t particularly bad but if you think about the food you’re eating you could definitely do better. Most likely will not be coming back.

This is my second review. The first review consisted of horrendous customer service but my friends who actually managed to get their meals seemed to enjoy them well enough. That was a few months ago. Same friends decided to order take-out this time so I tacked an order on figuring that with take-out we wouldn’t have to be subjected to terrible service. The issue this time is that my friend and I, who ate the same thing, both became quite ill with massive intestinal upset and all the fun stuff that comes along with that within 45 minutes or so of eating lunch. I’ll never eat anything from there again. The first time I had horrible service and ended up not even being served my meal. This time, the second and last, we got what we figure must be food poisoning. Just stay away from this restaurant.

I’ve eaten here a few times since it relaunched as a somewhat upscale-feeling izakaya place in early February. Service has been really good recently. Comparing my first visit when it had just opened until about a week ago, the service has gotten much better. It was a little spotty at the beginning, but I think it was just the servers getting used to things. It’s OK… just teething pains of any new restaurant. The food is very good. Some of my favourite small dishes are the beef tongue, the enoki beef, and chicken karaage. The grilled saba(whole fish) is very nice! The sushi is very fresh as well. We had quite a few types, but the lobster roll was outstanding! We splurged one evening and got the grilled Kobe steak. It certainly wasn’t cheap, but it was prepared perfectly and made it all worth it! It’s worth noting that they have Happy Hour from 2pm-6pm on weekdays. Great value on fresh oysters and various skewers!

This place is very elegant and clean. Food was delicious, somewhat pricey but worth it for its value. The skewers inwhich I noticed was uniqe to other japanese restaurants are notably worth trying! On top of that, service was extremely good. This place is still new so hopefully this stays the same

I saw this places while I was walking on street. It used to be an all you can eat sushi place, but they renovated the place with a fresh look. Also, it was a Happy Hour and it was a nice quiet time to eat. On that day, I ordered the Omakase(Chef’s choice sashimi), the Ankimo, the Saba Robata and the Chicken Karaage. The sashimi and the Ankimo was great but it will be better if they a chill a little more. Otherwise, it was fresh and I liked the presentation of the dish on a flower shaped bowl. The Chicken Karaage was well-seasoned and you can tasted it when it was cooked to ordered. Lastely, the Saba Robata was tasty but it was a little overcooked. Overall, this place have potential i guess. Also the price of the dish maybe a little high compare to some local sushi restaurant in the area. I would come back for dinner, one of those special date nights.

Grabbed lunch here with coworkers. I’d definitely recommend the sushi, as in the raw fish. it was fresh — had the spicy salmon roll(above average) but they were out of a hi tuna at noon on a Wednesday. I know this type of thing happens but the restaurant wasn’t that busy and it was fairly early in the day. My colleague ordered a chicken dish I think its called the yakitori chicken they’re basically skewers and they took forever to come out and wasn’t anything to write home about. Lots of cushion items on the menu, they were more in the expensive side but they do have the typical rolls that are reasonably priced considering you’re in downtown. I guess I’m just spoiled by all the sushi/Japanese options I was used to on Main street.
