* Latin bakery * I passed by and noticed this little bakery which for some reason I’ve never noticed before. I don’t think they are new. But I just never noticed. Shame on me! I did a quick u-turn and popped in to see what they had on offer. I was greeted by a very friendly woman who was all smiles. I looked over the offerings and settled on a beef empanada. She asked me if I wanted it heated up, and I said yes. She then said, «Microwave? Or toaster?» I said, «Toaster» and she said, «Good. It tastes terrible in the microwave, but you need to wait 8 minutes — ok?» That made me chuckle a bit, and thankful I asked for the toaster option! The empanada had a lovely browning on the crust. When I broke into it I was pleasantly surprised by the filling. Instead of ground beef, which is quite common, it was whole chunks of beef which had been simmered with onions and spices. Photo:
The beef was quite tender, well marinated and simmered, and was infused with a nice balance of flavours. Great empanada! They had a bunch of other Latin American offerings as well, which I likely will check out on a future visit.
