Simply put, Justin is a superstar. I am famously finicky about my Skates. In Toronto I would go all the way out to Just Hockey in East York. Here I used to go to John’s Cutting Edge in North Van before he sold his dupliskate machine to Larry’s, who did a decent job but just not up to John’s standard.
I usually make sure to go to public skate after an unfamiliar sharpening because I often get a nasty surprise. With Justin I had to get my skates done last minute. We had at least a 10 – 15 minute conversation about what my preferences were and what hollow to put on the blade. He also used gauges to show me deficiencies in my last sharpening and how my blades had been prematurely worn down at the toe by them.
We discussed a profile and he told me that although a profile would help, my steel had been worn down too much at the toe and would be a waste of money.
I got on the ice later that night and — perfect! For a goalie this situation is less common than you’d think. Many shops don’t even know what a hollow is, or will give you the wrong hollow. I’ve gotten my skate sharpened at most of the rink shops around the lower mainland and there’s a reason I’ve stuck to a few shops. And now, I’m sure I’m going to stick with Justin going forward.

This place is fantastic! My local hockey shop recently switched to a fully automated machine and I heard about this place so I dropped in to check it out. Super friendly and helpful staff with tons of knowledge behind him. Will be coming here from now on.
