Such a cozy place to enjoy fresh, delicious sushi AND have amazing, attentive service. Highly recommend!!!

Horrible quality, poor service at an unjustified price! Stay far far away. I’ve been to hyoga on several occasions. The food never stood out but was at least consistent. This time around the pressed sushi was awful. The rice was not edible and the fish stale. Absolutely unpalatable. The chef was unapologetic and didn’t see the concern when our group, 5 people found the food way too salty. I believe they purposely made it so salty to try to hide the taste of stale fish. I’ve been a regular and my faith has been broken. Good luck with this one if you ever try it.

I’ve never had anything bad here. Their sashimi is served on blocks of ICE and is about as fresh as you can get. And their rolls! Sure, they don’t have the biggest selection, but what they do have is incredible. I’ve also tried their specials when they’ve had them and have never been disappointed. I didn’t grow up with Japanese food, so the flavours here are new to me, but always welcomed by my tongue and tummy. This place is mouth wateringly delicious and I don’t think you can go wrong with anything you order here. I considered giving this place 4 stars because it’s a little pricier than most sushi places in this city, but the food quality is so high that I understand why it’s a little more expensive(and it’s far from outrageous).

My favorite sushi place in Vancouver! Owned and operated by a Japanese family. My recommendations are the negitoro tar tar, and the spicy calamari roll. De-lish!

Hyoga is a pretty small, intimate restaurant. It seats about 25(?) people and, as far as I can tell, has one person staffing the front of the house, even on a Friday evening. Maybe there are two people on Saturday nights? To this one waitress’s credit, she was very great at managing the busy front of the house while maintaining very polite and attentive customer service. Mad props. She took time to explain the various menu items, make multiple water and tea refill trips, and to check on us to see how we were liking the food. We got a bunch of rolls and sashimi combo items, most of which I don’t remember the names of. The quality of fish here is top notch though. Very fresh choice cuts with velvety smooth meat. If you’re going to get stuff here and haven’t been here before, I’d suggest sashimi and other sushi. Presentation and ingredient quality are the main positives here, while portion size was a bit lacking for the price, which is fair for this style of Japanese food. Had a chicken teriyaki lunch combo(for dinner though, for an extra $ 1.50) as well, and while the presentation was pretty good, the chicken itself was a bit disappointing. The meat was tender enough, but a little dry. As they like to say on Chopped, the presentation was superb, but the portion quality was lacking and the execution fell a little flat. This would probably be a cute place to come for a date night though. The atmosphere is just right, the food presentation and quality are impressive, and the front of house staff are superb.

My favorite Japanese restaurant in the area. I can see myself keep coming back every time I am there. Great food and Great service. Price is actually not as expensive as I thought. They have value sets and dessert. A restaurant where you can both go high-end and low-end. The plate for my set surprised me. Deinitely go check out.

I was very disappointed in the food at Hyoga’s. Reading the reviews on Unilocal I thought it would have some delicious sushi but I was let down. The portions were small and they weren’t very tasty. The tempura was hard as a rock and we sent it back, but it still was hard. The rolls were alright but they weren’t extraordinary. Overall this restaurant is meh in terms of flavor but did not live to expectations.

I went there and had some rolls, but it was bit overpriced. And quality was not really good. Rice was very very dry and fish was not fresh at all. They said Japanese own but it’s not a real sushi. Perhaps, the other food might be good. Such as Tempura or some cooked food…

Food tastes really good. Service is friendly. Nice small cozy restaurant and has AC in this heatwave is a must lol. My brother had the teriyaki chicken lunch set and I got the sashimi lunch set. Good price and portion size. Will come back!

I have now been here twice, once on a weekday, once… just recently on a weekend, needing a good, but small dinner, and this was the place of choice. The front of this place is funky. to the point of ghetto-tacky(you will know what I mean when you see it!), it’s not too hard to find… around the London Drugs area, across the street, yet it kind of is hard to find, on how it looks, with it’s messy front sign and when you reach the door, there is a little piece of paper attached saying«Japanese owned». I think it was that. or did they use the word run? No matter, you are getting Japanese people who work here, in a city that just had some report saying we have around 600 Japanese restaurants, it’s hard to distinguish the authentic to the non-authentic. Compared to the last time I came here, it was a lot more busy, even though we didn’t have to wait for a table, there was life in here. When you enter, this place is tiny… yet spacious as they do not cram the tables where they could fit more people. We were quickly sat, and offered their menus. There’s not too much in there when you open up, a special feature sheet and just a few pages, with things like appetizers, tempura, grill, sashimi, nigiri, hosomaki, uramaki, special roll, sushi donburi, specials, set menus, and noodles, it’s not jammed packed but what they have here is really good. On this night I decided on a mixed sashimi donburi dish from their specials menu with a mixture of tuna, salmon, squid, ebi and tamago on sushi rice. I was expecting something small, and for $ 8.99 you pay for what you get… yet I was surprised with what I got. A side salad, a small bowl of miso soup and the donburi… this was very good, and the size was just right, but this wasn’t just value, this was quality, the sashimi pieces were fresh, and the rice was seasoned just right. My friend on this night decided to go with the cold soba, forgot the exact name but it looked good, I should have stolen a bite but that just means I’m coming back to try that. The service was spot on with the server coming by and asking us how was dinner, and always refilling our tea cups. Eventually we asked for the bill, and it was brought to us, but we were never rushed and had a great dinner here. I have on the first occassion, tried the negitoro tartare, the pressed salmon sushi, and the black sesame ramen, I would order each of these again, it’s sort of a hidden gem, and it’s along an area that has a ton of restaurants, and strangely enough a Japanese restaurant that is right next door, I can tell you the times I have walked by here. this is the one with people. that has got to say something, come try it out and let’s see what you think.

Very hard to find this quality of Japanese food for this price. This was very delicious, made with fresh authentic Japanese ingredients. The pressed salmon sushi was really well done, very tasty. I also tried the Saba Shiso Ume roll, which I highly recommend — Mackerel Mint Plum, I guess you could say — It is amazing. They also had very fresh Hamachi nigiri, and Saba nigiri. I could not believe how a meal this good could be this affordable. This is a top pick for me.

Great tapas style restaurant at a fair price. Small portions which are just right for me. I’ve had the special rolls, tempura, and rice bowl sets and they are all fantastic. I also like how it’s not busy or noisy in here like many other Japanese tapas restaurants(ahem Suika). Your bill comes with jelly beans instead of mints which is a nice touch. Only downside is their food can be too salty!!! The server explained they put extra sauce on the rice so if you don’t like overly salty food, tell them beforehand. I rather have bland food and taste the real flavours than have it overpowered by sodium– eww. Other than that, this is a great little gem in the Collingwood area.

I ordered the black sesame ramen and my gf ordered the chirashi don. For the table of four we also got a caterpillar roll and R-tuna roll to share. Upon entering the restaurant, I couldn’t help but notice the Japanese owned sign which I found kind of funny. However the one waitress, although swamped, spoke decent English. There’s also parking which is paid at $ 1/hour on the street until 10pm and free afterwards. The R-tuna roll came first and it’s really just red tuna maki, not that amazing and kind of plain, but for $ 3, can’t really complain. The Caterpillar roll came a bit slow, but for a small restaurant, I guess it’s expected. Tasted quite normal and cost closer to $ 10 so I guess nothing amazing. For the Entrée’s, at about $ 10 each, were quite small. I didn’t get to try the chirashi don, but the rice was well made and the fish looked fresh and probably tasted really good because I didn’t get to try any! ;) I found the black sesame well flavoured and not too heavy on the black sesame, which is how I like it. As seen in the picture, it comes with these beef ribs. The meat on the ribs was amazing but the bones were also really annoying. So I guess mixed feelings there. The egg was perfectly done, cooked but still soft and just on the edge of liquidy. Overall the food was good and I would go back, but I wish the menu had better/more descriptions and the bones weren’t so annoying in the Ramen.

Tried their roll combo today, very bad. Taste is full and seem not fresh at all. I asked for extra wasabi but the waitress forgot about it.

Excellent quality at a low price. Try the spicy avocado roll if you’re a fan of crispy sushi. The unagi is also amazing. What amazes me is the presentation! Also if you’re a fan of tea, the cups keep flowing throughout your meal. I really enjoy the service everytime I visit.

This is a small restaurant — 8 tables only; not suitable for more than 4 people in your party. They do have a lot of takeout orders but from overhearing their phone calls, best to check your order before you leave. We ordered: Fish and Chip Set– Panko Crusted Cod with Sweet Potato Fries and Dynamite Roll, Side Salad and Miso Soup Black Sesame Ramen– Pork Bone and Ramen in a dark Sesame Broth, different taste from the typical ramen broth, not overly salty, not the prettiest presentation but the taste makes up for it. Chopped Scallop Sushi Tobiko Sushi Negihama Roll Prawn Tempura All in all, the food is good, the lone waitress was very good! Super Happy that we found two places in our hood that are operated by Japanese Chef and staff.

A friend recommended this place and since I live pretty close, I gave it a try. I wouldn’t have came into this restaurant from the location of the restaurant. The tiny place is located on Kingsway near Joyce along with all the other old shops. The sushi chef greeted us once we stepped in, the service was prompt and our tea was always filled. I ordered the Tuna Tatare which was marinated in their black sesame sauce served with crispy chips and rice. It was difference and quite delicious. I would recommend sharing this one. Next came our nigiri and roll: tobiko, tuna toro, sockeye salmon and chopped scallop. All were very fresh: toro was fatty, and chopped scallop was perfectly chilled. However, I do not recommend the saba ume roll due to the super sour flavoured berry sauce on top. Nabeyaki don came last. Though it was good with the buttery chicken and light prawn tempera, I found the fresh seaweed had a strong ocean taste that overpowered the soup. The place was quite dark inside; perhaps if they decide to fix half the spotlights that weren’t working, it might make the ambiance more welcoming.

One of the few authentic Japanese restaurants in the Killarney area! The place is super tiny and really easy to miss! They have a ton of lunch specials that range from $ 8 — 18. Since it was so hot out I got their cold ramen. It had all the right makings of a great ramen dish and it was delicious! The food came out really quickly and the waitress was really polite! Anddd they give you jelly beans for dessert! ;) so cute!

A really nice find in the Collingwood area! I came here for lunch with a friend on a Friday and was skeptical at first — the prices were a fair bit higher than what’s in the neighbourhood(plus, almost everything around is Chinese food!). But I was 100% impressed by the quality of the food here — I ordered a delicious sushi lunch meal complete with salmon and tuna sushi and california rolls. My friend ordered the korroge meal, with three different deep fried dishes. Both were fantastic! The place is small, so be patient if there’s a line — they get a slow when it’s busy(teas went empty for a while). The only reason it’s a 4-star was because they advertised cold-noodle ramen out front but they didn’t have any inside. It was confusing and it made me sad(that’s the main reason I stopped into this place!). Hopefully when I make another visit in the summer they’ll have it and I can update my review! To get here, take the 19, or walk from Joyce station(or if you don’t want to walk up the big hill, you can catch the 41 or 43).

I came to this restaurant after reading some of the reviews here on Unilocal on a Saturday night craving for a little sushi with the girlfriend(and yes, this will be my very first review!) We weren’t starving, but we knew we were both craving for sushi, and believe me, we are huge sushi lovers so we can taste the difference between quality, and a place that just wants to fill you up with quantity. A note to Unilocalers — the other reviews I found here reviewed things like Teriyaki Chicken and California Rolls, which are typically found in Westernised sushi places, which this place carries to cater to a larger customer base. If you’re going to go to an authentic Japanese place, why bother ordering something that they aren’t specialized in making? Go to Samurai Sushi if you want that stuff. It was around 9:15pm when we were parked across the street at Honolulu searching for the placed while looking down on my phone. All I could see was a place called Kishu Sushi that had a bright illuminated sign. It wasn’t till I looked a little closer that I saw Hyoga, with their super dark and not very obvious restaurant sign above their dimly lit restaurant. We walked in knowing they were closing at 10, but they still seated us without giving us the eye of «Why did you walk in here with 45 minutes left to closing» face. The one waitress seated us in the cozy, well kept, and Izakaya decorated restaurant. If I didn’t look out the window to see Honolulu café and Gold Train Express across the street, I would’ve thought I was seated at a more fancy restaurant located in downtown. This place is good for probably a maximum party of 6(and maybe 8 if you want to take up more than 25% of the seats), so don’t come here for a big birthday party if you have lots of friends you want to invite. Looking at the back there seemed to be two working in the kitchen. Contrary to Denny K.‘s review claiming them to be Korean, the three people working there communicated in Japanese, and even indicated on their door saying that they were Japanese Owned. Our service we received was exemplary(but keep in mind, we were the only ones in the restaurant). Even so, I have been to restaurants where I have been the only party at the restaurant, and still received crap service. If it were busier with 5 or 6 parties, the single waitress would’ve had to share her attention accordingly obviously. She refilled our tea every time she noticed it was not full, and took our dishes away when they were notably empty. She smiled and was notably very kind and polite, which I think is a trademark of Japanese culture. We ordered four different items off the menu which I will list out below(unfortunately I forgot the actual menu item names, so they will be named according to what they are): Toro Don Combo: 7 thinly sliced tuna belly sashimi served with their home made dipping sauce on the side, on top of a bed of rice, garnished with freshly chopped onions. Just looking at this don, I could tell it was prepared with proportions in check and presentation was neat and not just thrown together. The bed of rice was nice and warm. The toro was extremely fresh, cuts were clean, and the temperature of the sashimi was slightly cooler than the bed of rice, making the contrast in temperature while eating it all the more delightful. $ 8.5 Chirashi Don: 7 pieces of assorted sashimi(2x Ika, 2x Sockeye Salmon, 2x Tuna, 1x Amaebi, and a piece of Tamago), garnished with a solid slice of avacado on the side, on top of a bed of rice. My girlfriend had this so I can’t attest to all the sashimi, though I did steal one piece of the Ika sashimi which was fresh and tender. If it was anything like my Toro Don, it would have been fresh and served at the right temperatures. Judging from her comments, she really enjoyed it. $ 8.5 Spicy Calamari Roll: Deep fried calamari and a few strands of cucumber wrapped in rice, home made spicy dressing. The roll was decent. I couldn’t pinpoint anything special I liked about the roll. Hard to go wrong with deep friend calamari and sauce drizzled over it. $ 3.5 Chopped Scallop Nigiri: Chopped scallop, on top of a ball of sushi rice, wrapped with seaweed. The chopped scallop was extremely fresh(I’m starting to see a trend of freshness in their sashimi), and I devoured it with one bite. Excellent Nigiri. $ 1.5 This place is definitely and quite literally a hidden gem in the heart of Collingwood Kingsway, placed in the middle of other mediocre restaurants in the area, this Japanese restaurant is definitely the best of its category in this area. I would say I would put it in line with other quality and authentically owned Japanese restaurants such as Toshi and Ajisai, at half the prices of the aforementioned. If you want value, authenticity, and great taste, this place is the new place to go to folks. Just don’t order the teriyaki chicken or californa rolls. =)
