I come here regularly for my HK comfort food and they have always met my expectation. If you are looking for good service go elsewhere; why even go to an hk café? If you’ve been to/lived in hk you should know what to expect from one. Same for goes for oil content; if you’re complaining about it you obviously shouldn’t eat at any chinese restaurant in general. I usually come here for their baked stuff on rice, especially their baked pork chop. They have fish and chips for a decent price. If you get a set meal it will come with a soup and a drink of your choice. I would avoid the soup, pretty much just corn starch on top corn starch. Their curry is decent, but their noodle in soups are quite lacking. I’ve yet to try anything bad here and have never had a bad experience. If you come here with moderate expectations you won’t be disappointed.

It’s value for money. Golden Oscar’s interior is very plain. The color scheme is from the new millennium, the posters are from the new millennium, but with that, the prices haven’t probably changed since the new millennium as well(and that’s a good thing, since food prices are going up like crazy in Canada). I often come here when I feel like«living it up», but I don’t want to go to debt. Golden Oscar won’t cook up amazing food, but the prices are very reasonable at least. Many times, I’ve seen Asian boyfriends take their girlfriends to this restaurant. I am fairly confident it is because of the prices here. Their girlfriends might not like the food, but hey, she’s not paying. For only 13 bucks(I think it is only in the evening, I never come here for lunch, too many old Asian men), you can get a set steak dinner with a drink, garlic bread, soup and a platter of steak and some other assorted stuff to your choice(rice or noodles, french fries or vegetables). The garlic bread is a little greasy though, and the steak is somewhat chewy, but it’s 13 bucks, so it’s alright. Normally I would not come back to a 2 star restaurant, but Golden Oscar is an exception.

It is time for me to bring the hammer on this restaurant. I have been here many times, but never got a chance to review this place. So Here we go. The food is edible but it’s like seeing a skinny man trying to punch a cake and not being able to make a hole in it. The food is either very oily or has no flavour at all. They do have 2 portion sizes either the snack version or the large version. The snack version is so small that I could literally wolf down 3 of these(Given that I have a huge appetite) and it costs $ 8. However, if you order the larger portion, they would give you a smorgasboard of rice with a little bit more meat, but it is just a high carb meal in my honest opinion. I have seen the prices inflate, but it is inflating too high. Here is the final conclusion. If you want to go here for a quick stuff in your face meal and you do not care about quality and taste and all, go ahead. However, if you want flavour and quality, then I recommend a different place and not here.

Lightening fast service tonight. For $ 11 I got curry beef on rice, soup, and a cold drink. The place could definitely use a new coat of paint. The bathrooms a total renovation for sure. Okay place to go for a filling meal. They only take cash though. Lots of free parking. A plus is having Chong Li Market next door. You can pick up groceries before or after your meal.

I had been going to Golden Oscar for over 20 years. Today I had the worst experience ever. I order their typical HK style breakfast(2 eggs, sausage, toast and ham and macaroni in soup). Macaroni was way over cooked. They just threw in 3 big pieces of ham on top of the macaroni. Did not even bother cutting it up. The soup was bland. Sausage looked like it came out of the oven for over 10 minutes, all wrinkly. I went to a different HK Style café on Fraser two days ago and it was much better. I will NEVER come back to Golden Oscar again.

Came here for breakfast with friends because they live in the area. I have no expectations for this sort of hk style café, especially in terms of service. Ordered from the breakfast menu and one was a fish ball soup noodles. Fishball noodles have gone bad and the smell was off. We told the waitress that and she was going to exchange it. However, we asked for it to be taken off the bill, and we would pay for the drink that came with the meal instead, which they were OK with. Anyway, at the end when we were paying, we asked the waitress to break a $ 20 bill for us. Instead of just saying they don’t have it, she threw a tantrum at me saying,” No! I don’t have any! If I do have it, I’ll need it myself!!” The way she delivered the message was inappropriate and overeating. I know for sure I’ll never never return to this place! Spoiled food and terrible service! Do not recommended!

another Hk café… this one is near my work site and just beside the chinese grocery where i pick-up my stuff. HUge place another CASH basis restaurant, free parking. noise level average, good for group, family, and kids. just like other restaurants with thesame cathegory they have almost thesame GIGS on the menu… this time i had the grilled scallop and chicken steak on mushroom sauce, with rice, soup, garlic bread and a pop. affordable and foods are not bad specially with a nurse like me who just finished a 12 hour day shift i gezz nothing is bad food to me… generous serving i even to go half of what i ordered,.service isnt excellent but not bad, quick and most of the servers were bilingual(speaks cantonese or mandarin) hahhahahha joke only… i had a pleasant experience but this is not my favorite HK café… not bad…

Somewhat cheap Chinese food with crappy service by sassy middle-aged Asian women — sold. This is probably the largest HK-style café in in the entire area. Parking is available in the strip mall parking lot in front. If it’s full, parking can be had along 22nd, by the school. The inside is cheesy, with faded 1990s movie posters. For years I thought the restaurant was named after a guy named Oscar — it’s actually named after the statue instead. Maybe they need to put up newer movie posters. This ain’t no Planet Hollywood. The food is a bit pricey at $ 10 or so for the combo, but depending on what you order, you can get a huge portion(read: lotsa rice). The staff are nice and rude, and they just throw the food and utensils at you. Just the way one would expect. Anything less would be a slap to the face. Eat, drink, and get out.

[Award for Value] If you want a cheap hearty meal, look no further. Golden Oscar’s is a budget-friendly no-frills Hong Kong style café providing decent food at a great price. The food quality here is pretty decent as far as HK cafes go. My current fave is the Chicken and mushroom chow mein. The portions are huge(I suggest sharing unless you just ran a marathon), nice and crispy on the outside, saucy on the inside, and topped with Bok choy.(Most items here are pretty greasy or MSG-laden) At a mere $ 9.50 with a drink and soup, that’s tough to beat. This dish is part of an extensive list of set meals which are similarly priced including a drink and soup. My other favorite here is the chicken or beef curries. During happy hour(before 5pm and after 9pm), a snack sized(regular sized for most people) menu comes available with prices ranging from $ 5 – 7 with a drink. What’s odd about this place is the décor. There’s random movie posters from decades past strewn about the dining room — Casablanca, My fair lady, Braveheart. I mean, who wouldn’t want a young(relevant) Mel Gibson staring at them while they down their fried rice? At least they got it right — all of the movie posters had won an oscar at one point or another. The service here is typical of a HK café. «Efficient» is the word I’d use to describe it. The servers speak enough english to get by and are friendly enough. So if you’re in the neighborhood looking for a casual meal at a great price, you may want to consider Oscar’s. I tend to drop by after a good workout or a day of sports — I take the leftovers for breakfast. Keep in mind it’s cash only.

There is a certain love I have for HK café food, it’s one of those cravings I can’t eat everyday, but when the cravings hit, nothing really can substitute it, nothing. I was really in need of a fix of this type of food and not wanting to drive too far from the house, one of my all-time favorites of the city was going to be hit up. I haven’t been back for more than a year, at the same time this place has been around ever since my highschool days, so I was pretty sure I’d be in safe hands. It has been said before, and I’m just going to repeat the facts, what a weird name for an HK café, but going with theme they put up big posters of some real popular movies, like ‘Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’ to name one I remember, the booth I was sitting at had a picture of Clint Eastwood from ‘the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’, so at least they try to play up the name of the restaurant. There are a ton of spots in the plaza itself, with most patrons going to the Chong Lee supermarket next door, and all the spots are on a 45 degree angle. Going with one review saying the spots are tight, wow, lack of skill in parking, have you ever been to the T&T on Renfrew and 1st, really now, did you just get your drivers license? It’s easy to park here, and if you are really scared of, street parking is pretty easy to find. The first new thing I noticed, besides the metal barred gate over the glass doors was a paper sign printing out that they have beer now(oh. got the liquor license!) so if you need some fizz to wash down the food you’re about to order, you are now in luck! Nothing has really changed in here from what I last remember, you have your booth seating on the right, and your bigger table seating on the left. The kitchen is semi-open, for all of those who wonder where the food is coming from. This place still keeps its cleanliness, from the booths that I usually sit in, to looking at the hoods of the kitchen, still shining afterall. The washroom, standard, as these types of places aren’t know for you to prim and proper yourself in, just know the fact they have one. Either you have a love for this food. or your just impartial as you really have to be accepting of the food. You have your more traditional Chinese dishes, but what makes an HK café is those dishes that seem to mix the English flare to Chinese food. My two orders of the day, baked pork chop on rice, not just on any rice, but a mixture of fried rice with some veggie bits in it, topped off with a nice battered, deep fried pork chop, then covered with a tomato sauce, topped off with cheese, and thrown into the oven, yes… if your ordering this, don’t expect it to magically appear, as this does take some time to bake. The other dish on this day was the Malaysian fried rice, I have a feeling they might have given us the wrong order, but it was good nonetheless, minced beef bits, some peas, onions, lettuce, rice, and shrimp paste, might type of food indeed. If you have been to any HK café, you know there are certain times you can get some specials, and that is the mini menu, for under $ 10, your getting a smaller version of the full meal with a drink. On this day I decided to pair up one of my meals with the ever wicked HK milk tea! Wicked, as seems cause I was fully awake after drinking this thing, and I have a feeling it messed up my sleep that night entirely. Other than that, the concentration and mixture made my day, this was exactly what I needed. If you’re in for a baked rice of some sort, some swirly egg and beef on rice, maybe something a little bit more traditional like the flat rice noodles stir fried in beef, Singapore fried noodle, wintermelon on rice, baked spaghetti, some skinny beef or chicken steak, this place still does it the way it did it way back when. Consistency, that’s how this place has stayed here through all the times, I think some of the waitresses are still here from yesteryear, still serving the same stuff that has kept many here eating, and keeping this place on the map. Just remember, just like before as well… cash only! One thing that has changed, are their tea cups, they look like metal prison cups from an HK movie… adds to the ambience. or lack of, but you didn’t come here for that… now did you?

We were enticed to this restaurant by a photo posted on FB by a friend of my husband. The photo was of a dish that my husband wanted to try: Baked Pork Chops on Rice. Never having had it at our standard Hong Kong-style café, Honolulu Café, he insisted we drive on over in the snow. =) The prices are good. We were able to order ‘snacks’ from the late night menu, so I ordered one of my favorite dishes, Prawns with Swirl Eggs, for less than $ 8, including a hot drink. My husband confirmed that the Baked Pork Chops dish was indeed what he wanted, and he ordered away. Service was rapid and attentive. The food came out fast and piping hot. My dish was richly dosed with MSG, but I don’t mind that, having lived in Japan, where it is usually on the table in place of salt and pepper. The prawns were perfectly cooked. My husband’s dish was delicious. Two breaded pork chops, cooked well, atop a generous bed of scrambled egg rice, and then doused with a sweet tomato sauce, and cheese, which was all baked until the cheese melted. If memory serves that was about $ 9. The total bill, with tip, was $ 21. It’s cash only, so go prepared. Go hungry. Servings are generous, even for the ‘snacks’. I, of course, couldn’t finish mine, but a normal person would likely be full eating the whole thing. The next time we get a craving for Hong Kong-style café, we’ll probably try Alleluia out in Richmond, but after that, we might well come back here.

I’ve been going to Golden Oscar since I was a kid. This place has stood the test of time and it shows that on its walls when you walk into a restaurant that is lined with old movie posters. You know this place has been for a while when you can remember thinking that those posters were relevant to you as a child. However, over the last couple years, I felt as though this place has been going down hill. The food doesn’t taste as great as it did before, the drinks weren’t as bland, the service was more friendly, and the prices were more reasonable. Oscar café will always be a place where a bunch of our friends would gather for late night snacks or afternoon lunches, but it would never be a place where we would go out of our way to go to. It is nothing more than a place for a quick bite because we couldn’t think of any where else to go.

Been coming to this restaurant since ’97(guess that kinda shows my age), and while we’ve had a long term relationship, Golden Oscar Café isn’t as good as our relationship suggests. This is a Hong Kong style café and for their breakfast and afternoon tea selection(same as the late night menu), they’re pretty good for what they offer. The service is good for the most part, but we’ve seen a complete turnover of the servers, and the current crew cannot compare with the original group(they were fantastic). The food quality has deteriorated through the years as well, but sadly, they still remain one of the better choices in the area. A general rule of thumb for folks who judge a Hong Kong(or Chinese) restaurant is based on how many Chinese eat at the location, but that rule cannot be applied here. There is still a solid amount of customers because there is no competition within this area for Hong Kong style cafes, making them a default for locals. I’m not saying their food is bad, but don’t let the crowd fool you into thinking they’re better than they actually are.

Golden Oscar is another typical HK style café that’s been around since I was in high school. It used to be a go-to place for my friends and I if we wanted a cheap bite and drinks. Well, after all these years, it hasn’t changed. The food is nothing to brag about. You have the same menu options of steaks with spaghetti noodles, rice and soup dishes, and western style breakfast served with cream soup and a drink. At least it’s cheap, right? The walls are decorated with sun-faded posters of movies long ago, and the seating resembles a diner from the early 90s. I wouldn’t consider returning unless I was out of food options or wanted to walk on the cheap side and pay for food that’s «meh».

I consider myself a regular customer here. I really like this place because it’s super casual and convenient(if you live in the east van /renfrew area!) The service is always fast and the price is fair for what you get! I like to get their baked spaghetti with chicken, or curry beef brisket with rice. There’s also a mini meal special in the afternoons that come with a drink. You can expect the usual HK drink selection — I usually get HK milk tea/coffee mixed together. This is also a great go-to place for $ 5 breakfast! Make sure you get there before 11am. 2 peices of toast, bacon/or sausage, 2 eggs, and a soup.

Your typical HK style café that’s open late which is good for the locals here. Just find it’s a bit outdated. good thing it does have booth seating. We’ve eaten here after hockey so many times, with nothing memorable to even recommend. But seriously, drive up 5min. more to the Joyce area for some better selection, like Congee Noodle house or Honolulu Café. another negative is the tightness of the parking lot. Alas, you’re fighting with the supermarket & Little Caesars. Leave your Ford F150s/Hummers at home, b/c you won’t make it here. Just find parking on Rupert lol

I decided to order a pick up for one of their mini-set meals around 4pm. I ordered their sole filet cutlet and pork chop on spaghetti with mushroom sauce. I was disappointed to find out that I had to pay another $ 3 for iced lemon tea as other HK Style Café Restaurants would include it and charge maybe 50 cents to 1.00 extra to have it cold. My meal total came up to be $ 14 which I find expensive for a HK Café. I prefer going to Gloucestor Café on Cambie or Allulelia Café in Richmond instead.

This is definitely another hk café. My favorite food from this place would be their red bean dessert with ice cream.(Not sure what exactly it’s called). But I have to say the only place that I’ve been so far that has their red bean whole and not mushed up. The price here is decent as compared to other hk cafes around. There service is pretty quick. Waitresses there are alright. I usually go past 9 for their mini plates.

I don’t understand how Golden Oscar Café has survived for so long. I guess low prices can go a long way. Why are all the food shiney though? Must you drench everything in oil? The food was average at best. I recall eating here as a teenager years ago and decided to try it again for fun. Either I wasn’t very picky as a teenager or my tastebuds weren’t developed yet.

Reading Johnson C. ‘s review, now I understand the full sized movie posters… I always thought that was odd. lol. A pretty typical HK café with an extensive menu. Parking: yes Washrooms: dirty but not gross Iced drinks: add .50 on set menus Service: fast Ambiance and décor: you really shouldn’t be eating at a HK café =p Payment: cash only I usually go for the baked items. Yum!
