This café is downstairs in the MacMillan building. Ample study space and it’s good for students on a budget!

Still fabulous as always — only they’ve now updated their menu to include more hearty feature lunch options like veg chilli, curry bowls, mac and cheese, etc.; they still serve their everyday lunch items like the frittata, soup, and sandwich. They also have side salads for 75 cents. They’ve also increased the prices of most items by 25 cents to round everything up to the dollar, which is actually more convenient because you don’t end up with loads of quarters on hand. In addition they now charge a 25 cent premium for beverages if you don’t have your own mug or cup, and 50 cents if you want a paper to-go cup. Make sure you get there early before the food runs out!

This place is awesome. Their vegetarian/vegan food is fresh, local, delicious, AND cheap — a near impossible combination. Especially on campus. Pastries are scrumptious(their granola bar is made with condensed milk — need I say more?), and coffee and tea is only a dollar if you bring your own mug. I have yet to try the food, but there are microwaves nearby and plenty of tables for eating/drinking/conversating/studying or some or all of the above. Bring your cash! No cards accepted.

If you’re on UBC campus, need cheap yet nutritious food, and it’s September — early April, you should head over to MacMillan Building and check out Agora. It’s a volunteer student run place that focuses on local and vegetarian food. Try their homemade granola bars — particularly when they are still warm! But make sure you sit in a corner somewhere by yourself, that’s the only way to ensure your friends don’t devour the bar before you :) Everything I’ve had at Agora has been pretty good, except some of the soups… they tend to be made quite bland(often lacking salt and pepper even). Soup aside — I’d highly recommend people to try this place…

Agora is a student-run café in the basement of the MacMillan Building, at UBC(University of British Columbia). They offer super-cheap, fresh-made eats: baked goods, sandwiches, quiche, lasagna, soups, smoothies, etc. Food tends to run out quickly, so be sure and get there well before the lunch rush shows up. Cash-only, so keep your debits & credits at home.
