My husband took my 2.5 year old son for a hair cut here yesterday. I would give the Rod, Gun & Barbers shop more stars, but I can’t bring myself to due to the first negative I describe below. I am more than willing to give them 3 or even 4 stars if the first negative is resolved. Positives: My son was good, he sat pretty still, and the cut looks great. The stylist who cut his hair was really friendly and seemed to be great with kids. The atmosphere in the shop is unique and interesting Negatives: Not accepting credit cards or debit, although they have an ATM in the store that charges $ 2.50 for the transaction on top of whatever your bank charges to use an ATM. In our case this was an additional $ 1.50. So in the end the haircut cost $ 28($ 20 for the haircut, $ 4 tip and $ 4 in bank fees) which in my opinion is rather steep for a kid’s cut. Aside from the high cost to us, I can’t help but wonder who benefits from having a cash only system, and not accepting debit, but having an ATM in teh shop. Statistically, it costs businesses more per transaction to accept cash than to accept debit(25 cents vs. 19 cents according to the CBC article you can find by googling«Card costs: who pays what to whom»). And even if it cost them slightly more thank 19 cents, it in no way will cost them the $ 4 it cost us to withdraw this money. I realize that someone is making a lot of money from ATM fees, since a lot of people don’t carry cash anymore, but regardless of whatever the Rod, Gun & Barbers shop is gaining from this system(if anything) I would suggest they strongly re-consider accepting at the very least debit. The second of negative was that when calling to inquire about children’s haircuts my husband was told that they have a policy where if the child is acting up they won’t do the haircut. I feel like most parents understand this, and didn’t think it was necessary for it to be spelled out like this, as it can add even more anxiety to an already potentially stressful situation for the parent.

Really nice place, great bunch of guys working there. Grab a beer, watch the game, and get a cheap haircut.

Rod and Gun is a fun place for a haircut, shave, and drink. While I am leery of hipster-ish places, Rod and Gun is laid back, welcoming and downright enjoyable. Whether it is the mildly tacky décor or the friendly, professional staff, Rod and Gun delivers a great hair cut in a fun atmosphere. I have been very pleased with both haircuts I have had here. For 32 $ you can have a haircut and a beer. They also offer bourbon, if you are so inclined. They put the beer in a stein to avoid random hair clippings finding their way in there during your cut. Book your appointment time on their website. Note that the more popular barbers are sometimes booked up days or weeks in advance. If you just want a beer, drop in and sit at their small bar. If you don’t want to drink, a haircut is 25 $.
