How exactly does one review a ravine? The very idea makes me think of Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Anyway, it begins(or ends) in the west across St Clair Ave from Loblaws Forest Hill with a lovely, deep swoop into a forest, punctuated by reassuring City of Toronto light fixtures and mysterious TTC infrastructure. As one winds deep into the ravine, sounds of nature(including the whoops and other exuberant sounds of those unaccustomed to it) drown out street noise. The walk slopes gently upward for a leisurely walk of about 10 minutes among spooky woods and humanoid root formations until one climbs a grand staircase to join the bridge at Spadina Road just south of St Clair. One can continue and come up east of Spadina instead, ending(or starting) at a stately but modest monument to human achievement that marks the boundary of a reservoir. Or the more daring adventurer can proceed up Spadina beyond Lonsdale and catch the next ravine trail, which begins at a tiny playground and runs west just south of Strathearn through Cedarvale Park. I walked both of these ravines while wearing a pair of silly slides, much like Nonna would wear to hang out the laundry, proving the ease of this walk. Bravo, Slartibartfast. Understated enough for old-stock Torontonians; almost wild enough for the rest of us.
