I was in Toronto for part business and part pleasure and stopped here looking for higher quality Mole mix ingredients. The jarred stuff is OK, but not great, and completely home made is great(but a lot of work). These folks had a highly regarded but difficult-to-find dry mix from Mexico. They also have the whole selection of Mexican dry goods, from a number of varieties of dried chiles to seeds, spices, canned goods and tortillas. Very nice people.

When I read about making your own sweet-salty olive oil granola in The NYT Dining section, I knew I had to try it. I set out for the bulk food shops in Kensington Market and the first one I came across was Mexican Dry Goods.(It didn’t hurt that the cute store clerk flashed a smile at me as he stood by the door.) Nice smiles notwithstanding, MDG was one-stop shopping for all the ingredients called for in the recipe: rolled oats, nuts, dried apricots, spices –they even have light brown sugar sold by the pound. And there’s a reason why it’s called Mexican Dry Goods; the shop displays a random smattering of Mexican staples like tinned jalapenos, cactus pads, and salsas. Mexican Dry Goods is right next to two other dry goods stores so the prices are competitive. All told, I got what’ll be 1-month’s worth of granola ingredients for under 10 bucks.(The smile was free.) P. S. Here’s the link to the granola article with recipe:
