The Kapisanan Philippine Centre used to be a pretty standard community centre for Toronto’s Filipino population, but as of late, it has undergone some revamping. The end result — a youth-focused arts&culture development complex. Making great use of their 3500 sq. foot space in Kensington Market, Kapisanan has created a: — performance/rehearsal/event space — community gallery — fully equipped music recording studio The primary purpose of KPC is to provide a space for young Filipinos to delve into their roots, culture and tradition through their own creative expression. This isn’t some sort of fraud«corporate social responsibility» space, the people who run Kapisanan, and the youth who take part in their programs, are extremely passionate and feel priviledged to have a space like this to congregate at, and create within. Last night, I attended Rolly’s Garage on Ossington, for an exhibition completely curated and created by youth from KPC and their mentors. More info on the event here: Gotta love this city!
