This place makes me happy. (Please though, Hawaii god’s, if you’re listening… acquire bar lime)

Not bad. It’s definitely a dive bar: puffed plastic and metal chairs straight from a Chinese restaurant in 1992, rickety pressboard tables, crazy crap all over the walls… Service was friendly enough, but the bartender didn’t know any bourbon cocktails, which I was craving. I mean, hey, neither did I, but I’m not a bartender anymore and I used to keep a big book of cocktails behind the bar for these situations. Yes, I realize I was being the worst customer ever with my «uhmm I want something with bourbon in it… but I don’t know what…» I ended up ordering a bourbon with ginger ale and lemon slice(meh) while the Hubster had a beer, and then SOMETHINGHAPPENED. A man stepped up to a microphone at the back of the place and said«hey everyone, welcome to our comedy night!» The Hubster and I exchanged barely concealed horrified looks, as did the table of two guys beside us. Turns out, the four of us were going to be the only audience members on their biweekly amateur stand up comedy night, and we were all in the front row. Clearly, none of us saw the sandwich board sign outside. The other comedians were huddled near the bar, reading over their notes on their phones. If you’ve never been to an amateur comedy night before, it can be pretty uncomfortable. The comedians are about 5 feet away, nervous, and will often look right in your face for support, and since I’m not one to heap out fake praise, they didn’t get much from me. Which made me feel bad. I’m not going to comment on the quality of the comedians. They got better as the night went on… a combination of pounding back drinks and the fact that they generally got more experienced and better as the night went on. The show was maybe an hour and a half long, and once that was over, the comedians quickly left the bar en masse. We breathed a sigh of relief, and suddenly found ourselves with hours and hours of stuff to talk about(thank god they left, and didn’t have to hear all the blistering comments from a TV producer and a marketing writer). It ended up being a really cool night after all and definitely a fun memory. We likely won’t make an effort to check out the comedy night again, but we might visit the bar for drinks. If anything, because it is literally a 5 minute bus ride from our door.

I purposefully came in here on Friday night for Comedy Night. It was not funny. Moving on. I like it here. They always have $ 2 jello shots which makes me giggle and a decent bottled beer selection. They skimp on the ice in their drinks due to the lack of ice machine, though, so go for neat drinks and/or beer if you’re looking for something ice cold.(Outkast style.) Aside from being called Hawaii Bar and having tiki décor from the 70s there is nothing tropical about this place, but that only adds to the charm. This family run joint isn’t for the faint of heart. PEPPERPOINTS for proximity to my pillow.

This bar is nothing special and very special at the same time. Your average local bar but with tropical plants and caged birds. That sort of easy going feel lends this bar to feeling like a magical place. If you’re just looking for a place to unwind, or maybe a place to take some friend to make them smile this is your best bet in town.

Went to Hawaii Bar for a «vacation» and loved every minute of it! Friday nights have a comedy night with a bunch of headliners and the chance to put your name into a lottery to be picked for one of he open mic spots. Plus cheap drinks, good food and amazing staff… not to mention jello shots that remind me of the hazy days of university. Atmosphere is totally authentic, never trying too hard, in a city where that’s a rarity. Would definitely recommend to check out with a group of friends.

Hawaii Bar is the best bar in my immediate neighborhood. I was so glad that Robert K. decided to go in there with me, as I was slightly worried you had to be male and Portuguese to be granted entry. WRONG. Hawaii bar is for everyone, old, young, Portuguese, non-Portuguese, and feathered(there are birds in the entrance way). The décor is charmingly Tiki, the staff extremely friendly, and the beer is very cold(note: no draft beer on tap). This is a good neighborhood hangout and though I’ve never been to Hawaii, reminds me thoroughly of a few Montréal bars I used to frequent during my McGill days. ALOHA.

Quite an interesting find, this Hawaii bar. Totally authentic place. Been around for years, but I had never heard about it until a friend stumbled in there expecting a dank and unfriendly Portuguese man bar. Everyone was so friendly! The place was decorated with great stuff, and the prices were OK. Seemed like all the bottles were in the back(not at the bar) so — not sure how fast it would be to drink here on a busy night. Only heard good things about Tuesday night Tiki music.
