I went to the Scarborough(Bartley Dr.) store to enquire about buying or renting a stationary bike. First I was shown a very expensive one that I could rent for a minimum of 3 months — this was fine as that is the time frame I had in mind. When I asked about the rental price, I was told that I would have to purchase the bike and pay for delivery, then after the 3 months, I would be refunded the remaining money, minus the delivery charge, but would also be charged for the pick up. This would have cost about $ 800. So the salesperson(Keith) showed me a less expensive model — Pure Fitness brand — so I decided to buy this instead. The cost, plus delivery was $ 300. Two months later, the pedals on the bike are very wobbly. I phoned the store and ask about service or replacing the bike, or a refund. I was told that there was no warranty on the bike, only for parts but, to get it serviced I would need to pay for the service call and would have to first phone the service dept. I phoned the service dept. and was told that there was nothing they could do about the pedals as it was just a design of the bike. I then phoned the store back to ask for a refund(it had only been 2 months) and they said NO refunds but offered to give me a credit towards a more expensive bike — the $ 800 one. The sales person I talked to(Scott) was extremely rude and insisted that he could do nothing for me. I do also think that because I was female he didn’t think he had to accommodate me. I went to Fitness Depot to shop for a replacement treadmill. My original treadmill was quite old so the technology had changed a lot and I had a lot to learn. I initially went to the Bartley Drive location and had a fabulous sales guy, Keith, who gave me a wonderful overview of the new units and helped me to narrow down my selection without an aggressive sales pitch, which I appreciated. I also went to Foremost Fitness, Sears and did a lot of online research. After discussing the options with my partner I dropped into the Yonge Street Fitness Depot location, which was across the street from a work meeting I had just attended, to take a close up pic of the unit display that I couldn’t get online and asked the staff a few questions — mostly about he Apple TV hook up option. Having made my purchase decision I called the Bartley location back the next day however Keith was off that day and I spoke to the owner, Scott. This changed everything! First Scott was incredibly abrupt and in my opinion seriously lacked customer service skills. He confirmed the pricing but gave me a different delivery and set up charge then I was initially quoted by Keith. Which was also different then what I was told by Yonge Street. There was a $ 100 variance! So I called the Blue Jays Way location to ask about their delivery and set up cost. He called me back, gave me the cost and stated that he was aware that I had been to the Yonge Street location and referred me back to that sales person if I wished to make the purchase. I appreciated that they honor their sales people however I was not intending to purchase from their location anyway I just wanted to clarify the delivery set up costs. I had spent considerable time with Keith at Bartley and only about 10 minutes with Yonge Street so my decision was to make the purchase from Keith when he returned to work. HOWEVER, about a half hour later I received a phone call from Scott(owner from Bartley location where I had originally went) who stated that he was aware that I had been to Yonge Street and called Blue Jays Way and advised me not to ‘waste my time’ going to other stores to try to get a better deal. He stated that they are a corporate store and they«talk». He then advised me that they had«sent an email» around to their stores stating. his words«watch out for Charlene». OMFG! How incredibly offensive. Watch out for me? Who, the woman who wants to buy a treadmill? Shocking. I’m shopping for a treadmill, of course I visit more then one store in my decision making process. I’m still processing his audacity to police my shopping and his nerve to actually call me and say that. Talk about alienating a potential customer. The end result is that I feel bad for Keith(Bartley sales guy). He was wonderful, patient, educational and had great customer service skills yet now I can’t bring myself to give my $ 4000 to Fitness Depot which means that Keith looses out on a well deserved sale — thanks to his incredibly inappropriate manager! Good job boss! Stick to the books and keep the sales and customer service to the people who are trained to do it.

A couple weeks ago I bought a recumbent bike at this Fitness Depot. It’s a small crowded space with lots of equipment. Michael Carpino is the manager and he was really friendly and helpful. My husband and I tried a couple of the bikes before deciding on the one. Then we walked around asking questions about stuff they have(it looked alien to us!) … Michael was very patient with us. We couldn’t fit the bike in our car so I arranged to have it delivered. Thankfully it was already put together … the instructions to do that are mind blowing! Michael followed up with voice message last week to make sure everything was okay.

I helped my condo purchase over $ 16,000 worth of gym equipment and machines from Fitness Depot and the experience has been very disappointing. Their prices are very competitive, however everything else has been a major let down and I wouldn’t support such a poorly managed chain that couldn’t get things right in a timely manner. Fitness Depot’s management and customer service structure is their major downfall. Their stores and staff only deals with sales while everything else such as delivery, service, repairs and warranty work is done by a third party contractor who are incredibly unreliable & unresponsive and meanwhile the sales staff don’t make the effort nor were very responsible or accountable to their customers. Our complete gym room equipment, which includes a treadmill, stationary bicycle, a universal station, a Smith Rack, with complete free weights, benches, and various accessories. The equipment was delivered and assembled rather hastily, with some parts either missing or not installed. The treadmill was had part of the plastic cover chipped off, luckily it was cosmetic and I eventually found the missing piece on the floor which I crazy glued backed on. After delivery and assembly there wasn’t a proper and thorough inspection and test of the equipment. The treadmill wasn’t properly calibrated, the cables of the weight machines were twisted and not operating smoothly or quietly as it should. I had to deal with one of their third party contractors for more than 4 months with no resolution. I explicitly instructed them to call me when they were supposed to show up so that I could explain in detail what needed to be fixed, instead they showed up unannounced and entered into my condo building without permission or notice and it didn’t seem that they did any work to the equipment. The equipment was still not properly repaired and it wasn’t until a month or two later the store gave me a number to the national customer service centre to call and they managed to send a competent contractor to service and repair the gym equipment. Why didn’t the store do this in the first place!!! So I would have to say if they can’t properly serve a customer who gave them a ton of business, they probably have the same attentive-lacking and uncaring attitude to other customers — they have an uncanny similarity to a stereotypical bad used car dealership. Stay away, there are other fitness equipment stores that deserve your business.
