ASD is a fantastic dance studio in the basement of the 401 Richmond building. They offer classes in: flamenco, classical Spanish dance, sevillanas, bata de cola, guitar, and singing. The director, Esmeralda Enrique, is a very respected and talented performer and teacher who has been a pioneer of the flamenco scene in Toronto since she started her company 30 years ago. She still teaches several classes. Other teachers are great. I have taken 2 of the beginner classes with Sonia and Angela. They are very welcoming and allow you to sit in on or try classes to see what suits you best. Classes go all the way to advanced/professional level, and it’s always inspiring to watch those dancers! Some classes are done to taped music, while others have a live guitarist accompanying the class. There are many performance opportunities including an annual recital in June, as well as appearances at Nathan Philips Square, Harbourfront Centre, etc. as part of cultural festivals. Try it out first, and if you are serious and want to invest in real flamenco shoes(handmade in Spain!), Esmeralda has a nice selection for sale at the studio. The changeroom is small(only 1, females only — the few male dancers have to change in the washroom I guess!). There is a main studio and a smaller one at the back for smaller classes/music classes. Overall, great place to learn about flamenco(not just the dance, but the history, music, culture, etc.) in a fun and easygoing environment.
