one of the best cocktail places in all of toronto. bartenders are great, and like other reviewers said, there is no menu. just tell them what you feel like drinking and guarantee they will make you something delicious. vibe is laid-back and friendly. only downside is it can get slow on service at peak times.

Be honest about what you like and they will make you a cocktail you will enjoy.

This place is legit! The décor/seating/ambiance is spot on. It’s a great spot to meet up with friends(and likely a really sassy spot for a date). Cocktails are usually $ 12−15ish from what I’ve gathered(standard).

Civil liberties is hands down the best cocktail bar of its kind. If you love mixed drinks and enjoy knowledgeable friendly service, this is your place. The bartender/owner Nick that my husband and I talked to was extremely personable and a cocktail genius. Watching him make drinks was like watching art. It is not the kind of place to go if you want an extensive food menu, but in the ever popular genre of fancy, old school cocktail bars, Civil Liberties is in a league of their own. I say this as someone from Nashville, TN, where this particular kind of bar is popular and plentiful. Absolutely a must visit place if you are in Toronto.

Really great drinks & vibe — though you should know that there is no menu. Which means that you have to tell them what you are in the mood for and then they make you an awesome drink in that vein. A bit pricey, but what do you expect at a hipster cocktail bar?

Went here last night with a few friends. The ambience is amazing, beautiful layout, cool furnishings, stellar bar. The bartenders are knowledgable and friendly and when I came back up from the restroom there was water on the table. Minus points for no menus — which is ok if you know a lot about what kind of cocktails can be made(they can make anything) but sometimes you just want to browse. Also — no posted prices — I had a little sticker shock when I cashed out. Price for a sazerac and an old fashioned pre-tip total was $ 28! Also the food selection — aka an old school sandwich press with options that include variations of grilled cheese /ham and cheese /pb&j /nutella left much to be desired. We would have stayed longer(though for the $ glad we didn’t) if there was something a little more appetizing to go along with the classy cocktails and cool space. A trendy spot with a need for just a little more.

We heard good things about Civil Liberties and we were not disappointed. We’ve gone back now twice and had a great time each time. If you’re looking for a fun atmosphere, this is a great bar. If you love cocktails, this is a fantastic bar. Civil Liberties is a place to try new cocktails without a heavy price tag. Tell them what you like and they’ll create fun cocktails to try while giving you a background on the drink. Nick in particular is great and funny. The only negative is that when the place gets full, the service suffers a bit and the charm of the place(that they tell you about the cocktail, what’s in it, a bit of history) gets lost. Better to come in earlier in the night(9 p.m.) and sit at the long bar to get a real feel for the place.
