My wife and I hired Brothers to do some work on our weeping tiles and install a battery backed-up sump pump. The installer installed the battery backed-up pump in approximately February 2014, and tested nothing before he left. When I tested the secondary pump last Saturday morning(June 14, 2014) the installation failed 4 different ways: a shut off valve leaked, the float wasn’t installed at the correct height and didn’t operate the pump correctly, the check valve in front of the secondary pump leaked after the pump shut off, and worst of all, contrary to building codes, they failed to install a check valve below the secondary pump which meant the secondary pump just discharged through the primary back into the sump pit, effectively rendering the entire installation useless! I called Brothers during the week, they first of all kept repeating the equipment was installed according to the manufacturer’s specification. I told them to check with a licensed plumber. Eventually they called me back and said they had checked and the manufacturer’s specification had changed, and indeed another check valve was required. They offered to send someone between 12 and 4 on June 21. With no word from them by 1pm, I knew where this was going so I started the job myself. I spent about 6 hours and replaced the shut-off valve, I replaced the leaky check valve, I installed the second check valve required by code, and I adjusted the float height until it operates the secondary pump properly. They eventually called me about 4pm and asked if it would be OK to re-schedule the appointment. I told them the job was almost finished.
