SOMEOFTHEBESTANTIQUES @ QUEEN&RONCIE! If you’ve ever been in a hunt for affordable, stylish, good-condition antiques in Toronto, you’ve got to head down to Queen West at Roncesvalles. There’s a whole block from on Queen St. West, just East of Roncesvalles that will set your vintage heart aflame. There are two types of shops on this row. The warehouse-style showroom and the Mom & Pop Shoppe. The warehouses aren’t over-fancy and corporate like Home Outfitters and the like, but rather cluttered, leaving the customer the opportunity to find a gem somewhere on the showroom floor(This is fun by the way…) Arcadia Antiques is more the Mom & Pop style, which is a lot smaller, but with definite one-of-a-kind items. We purchased a Gibbard corner-unit china cabinet that we now cherish very deeply. And because shops like Arcadia are private, you can negotiate the price somewhat on the spot. Sometimes if you can front the cash, they may waive the taxes for you. I believe in supporting the local merchant as much as possible. I admit I may cave in and hit the Wal-Mart on occasion, but if I’m gonna drop more serious dough, I always go private.
